Despite a broad literature addressing the human dimensions of wildfire, current approaches often compartmentalize results according to disciplinary boundaries. Further, relatively few studies have focused on the public’s evolving perceptions of wildfire as communities change over time. This paper responds to these gaps by exploring perceptions of landscape dynamics and wildfire between 2003 and 2007 using a typological framework of intersecting ecological, social, and cultural processes. Designed as a restudy, and using key informant interviews, this research allowed us to observe risk perception as they are related to community challenges and opportunities in the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Risk perceptions were examined as an integral part of community and landscape change. Wildfire was a concern among informants in 2003 and remained a concern in 2007, although informants were less likely to discuss it as a major threat compared to the original study. Informants in the western part of the peninsula tended to express more concern about wildfire than their eastern counterparts largely due to their experiences with recent fires. Other important factors residents considered included changing forest fuels, the expanding wildland urban interface, and contrasting values of new residents. Underscoring the localized nature of risk perceptions, informants had difficulty describing the probability of a wildfire event in a geographical context broader than the community scale. This paper demonstrates how a holistic approach can help wildfire and natural resource professionals, community members, and other stakeholders understand the social and physical complexities influencing collective actions or inactions to address the threat of wildfire.  相似文献

Under the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) Program, a technology developed by AWD Technologies, Inc. was demonstrated in September 1990. This paper presents the major results of the SITE demonstration of AWD Technologies’ AquaDetox®ISVE treatment system designed for simultaneous on-site treatment of contaminated groundwater and soil-gas. The groundwater and soil at the demonstration site were contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The AWD technology was evaluated on the basis of the removal efficiencies of TCE and PCE from the contaminated groundwater and soil-gas. The conclusions drawn from these evaluations are: (1) the system achieved removal efficiencies as high as 99.99percent for groundwater and 99.9 percent for soil-gas; (2) the effluent groundwater was in compliance with the regulatory discharge requirements of 5 fig/L each for TCE and PCE for all test runs; (3) the demonstrated 1,000 gpm system has an estimated capital cost of $4.3 million and annual operating and maintenance cost of approximately $820,000.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA)/starch fibers were produced by twin screw extrusion of PLA with granular or gelatinized starch/glycerol followed by drawing through a set of winders with an intermediate oven. At 30% starch, fibers drawn 2–5x were highly flexible (elongation 20–100%) while undrawn filaments were brittle (elongation 2–9%). Tensile strength and moduli increased with increasing draw ratio but decreased with increasing starch content. Mechanical properties were better for composites made with gelatinized starch/glycerol than granular starch. In conclusion, orientation greatly increases the flexibility of PLA/starch composites and this may be useful not only in fibers but also possibly in molded articles. Other advantages of starch addition could include fiber softness without added plasticizer, moisture/odor absorbency and as a carrier for active compounds.  相似文献

Empirical and theoretical investigations of monocarpy have usually addressed the question of minimum or threshold sizes for reproduction. However, the range of flowering sizes observed in many monocarpic species is extraordinarily large (well beyond what can be called a "threshold"), and the sizes of flowering and nonflowering plants may overlap greatly. We attempt to explain these reproductive patterns in terms of optimal reaction norms predicted by simple deterministic life history models. We assume that individuals differ in their growth trajectories due to the heterogeneous quality of microsites and ask how the optimal age and size at flowering varies with environmental variation in growth and for different assumptions about fecundity and mortality. Under two very different growth functions (one with no age- or size-related decline in growth rate and another with such a decline as size approaches an asymptote), the optimal reaction norms imply considerable plasticity for size at reproduction, particularly when poor growth is associated with higher mortality or lower asymptotic size. Deterministic models such as these may be more applicable to long-lived than to short-lived monocarps, because fitness potential should be less affected by stochastic variability in yearly growing condition in the former than in the latter. We consider the case of a tropical monocarpic and masting tree species, Cerberiopsis candelabra (Apocynaceae), and show that our model results can account for wide ranges of reproductive size and overlap in size of flowering and nonflowering plants, in accord with observation. We suggest that empirical attention to norms of reaction across growth environments will be a more profitable approach than investigation of size thresholds per se.  相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are ubiquitous persistent pollutants in humans. Whether people with different genotypes are with different susceptibility to these chemicals are unknown. In a group of people highly exposed to PCBs/PCDFs, we tested the hypothesis that genotypic polymorphisms affected susceptibility for development of skin manifestations. METHODS: In 1979, approximately 2000 people in central Taiwan ingested cooking oil contaminated with PCBs/PCDFs. Skin disorder such as chloracne, abnormal nail, hyperkeratosis and skin allergy were found in PCBs/PCDFs exposed group. We recruited exposed and community background exposure subjects for blood testing and telephone-interview. Single nucleotide polymorphisms, AhR Arg554Lys, CYP1A1 Ile462Val, CYP1A1 T6235C, and GSTM1/T1 deletion, were determined. Occurrence of skin manifestations was compared among people with different genotypes while stratified by PCB exposure levels by logistic regression. RESULTS: Data on exposure, medical history, and genotypes were obtained from 393 exposed and 181 background exposure groups. Skin manifestations including chloracne, allergy, abnormal nail, and hyperkeratosis were more prevalent in exposed people in a dose-related manner. Among highly exposed individuals, combined CYP1A1-MspI mutant genotype and GSTM1-null genotype were associated with increased risk of chloracne (odds ratio 2.8, 95% confidence interval 1.1-7.6). Among intermediately exposed individuals, GSTM1 null genotype was associated with skin allergy. AhR Arg554Lys genotype and GSTT1 null genotype were not related to susceptibility to skin manifestations in PCB/PCDF-exposed population. CONCLUSION: CYP1A1 and GSTM1 genotypic polymorphisms might be related to the susceptibility to PCB/PCDF-induced skin manifestations.  相似文献

As a part of a receptor model study of the Philadelphia, PA atmosphere, particulate samples were collected from seven air pollution sources in the area: two oil-fired power plants, a coal-fired power plant, a fluidized catalytic cracker, a refuse incinerator, a secondary aluminum smelter and an antimony ore roaster. Samples were collected In two size fractions with a dilution source sampler connected to a modified dichotomous sampler. Masses of collected material were determined gravlmetrlcally. Samples were analyzed for elements by x-ray fluorescence followed by Instrumental neutron activation analysis of some samples. Other samples were analyzed by chemical methods for volatile and nonvolatile carbon, SO4 2? and NH4 +. Data are presented for up to 46 elements and species on fine (<2.5-μm aerodynamic equivalent diameter) and coarse (2.5 μm < diam < 7-10 μm) particles from each source. Although the data were collected for use in Philadelphia, they should be of value for receptor modeling of other areas having similar sources. The most unexpected results were the large amounts of rare earth elements on particles from the catalytic cracker (e.g., 0.31 percent La In fine fraction) and the oil-fired power plants (120 and 420 ppm La in fine fraction). Substantial amounts of primary SO4 2? are released from the oil-fired plants, the SO4 2? concentrations accounting for 40-45 percent of the fine particulate mass.  相似文献
