In environmental assessment and monitoring, a primary objective of the investigator is to describe the changes occurring in the environmentally important variables over time. Propagation functions have been proposed to describe the distributional changes occurring in the variable of interest at two different times. McDonald et al. (1992, 1995) proposed an estimator of propagation function under the assumption of normality. We conduct a detailed sensitivity analysis of inference based on the normal model. It turns out that this model is appropriate only for small departures from normality whereas, for moderate to large departures, both estimation and testing of hypothesis break down. Non-parametric estimation of the propagation function based on kernel density estimation is also considered and the robustness of the choice of bandwidth for kernel density estimation is investigated. Bootstrapping is employed to obtain confidence intervals for the propagation function and also to determine the critical regions for testing the significance of distributional changes between two sampling epochs. Also studied briefly is the mathematical form and graphical shape of the propagation function for some parametric bivariate families of distributions. The paper provides an up-to-date annotated bibliography of the literature on ranked set sampling. The bibliography includes all pertinent papers known to the authors, and is intended to cover applications as well as theoretical developments. The annotations are arranged in chronological order and are intended to be sufficiently complete and detailed that a reading from beginning to end would provide a statistically mature reader with a state-of-the-art survey of ranked set sampling, including historical development, current status, and future research directions and applications. The fingerlings of fish Labeo rohita were subjected to chronic (15, 30, and 60 days) and recovery (60 days) experiments for histopathological studies using sublethal concentrations (35.4%, 26.6%, and 17.7% v/v) of municipal wastewater of Tung Dhab drain, Amritsar, India. Control fish were maintained for same exposure periods using tap water. Scanning electron microscopic studies exhibited dose- and duration-dependent alterations on gill surface ultra-structure. Control fish exhibited functionally normal gills with normal mean degree of tissue change. Fifteen different types of lesions were identified out of which 9, 5, and 1 were of the stage I, II, and III, respectively. The mean degree of change values in the treated groups ranged from 14.8 ± 0.5 (17.7%, 15 days) to 116. ± 17 (35.4%, 60 days) demonstrated gill damages of slight to irreparable lesions. The recorded alterations were epithelial lifting and intraepithelial edema, reduction of water spaces, lamellar fusion, lamellar telangiectasia, swelling and fusion of filaments, sloughing of lamellar epithelium, hypertrophy and hyperplasia of mucous and chloride cells, and necrotic lamellae. The recovery experiments showed positive improvement as the intensity of damage was less than recorded for 60 days of treatment. This study clearly indicated toxicity of drain water to fish at cellular and organ level. The study recommends environmental agencies to make and enforce decisions regarding improvement of water quality of Tung Dhab drain, and further incorporating histopathological studies as an analytical tool. 相似文献

Ion track filters (ITFs) are produced by physiochemical treatments to thin films of polymers and mica irradiated by heavy ions. These ITFs have many applications in the fields of science and technology. In the present investigation, the developed ITFs from polycarbonate films have been used to filter bacteria of various types in water. It is observed that the electric conduction through these filters depends upon the concentration of contaminants and pore diameter of filters. Filtration experiments were carried out using both single and multipore filters. Other applications related to environment surveillance have also been reported. 相似文献

A field experiment was conducted for two years on a sandy loam (Typic Ustochrept) soil of Punjab to study the effect of organic materials and rice cultivars on methane emission from rice fields. The methane flux varied between 0.04 and 0.93 mg m(-2) hr(-1) in bare soil and transplanting of rice crop doubled the methane flux (0.07 to 2.06 mg m(-2) hr(-1)). Among rice cultivars, significantly (p < 0.05) higher amount of methane was emitted from Pusa 44 compared to PR 118 and PR 111. Application of organic materials enhanced methane emission from rice fields and resulted in increased soil organic carbon content. The greatest seasonal methane flux was observed in wheat straw amended plots (229.6 kg ha(-1)) followed by farmyard manure (111.6 kg ha(-1)), green manure (85.4 kg ha(-1)) and the least from rice straw compost amended plots (36.9 kg ha(-1)) as compared to control (21.5 kg ha(-1)). The differential effect of organic materials in enhancing methane flux was related to total carbon or C:N ratio of the material. The results showed that incorporation of humified organic matter such as rice straw compost could minimize methane emission from rice fields with co-benefits of increased soil fertility and crop productivity. 相似文献
