The research objective was to adapt the ultraviolet (UV)-photolysis method to determine dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in aqueous extracts of aerosol samples. DON was assumed to be the difference in total concentration of inorganic nitrogen forms before and after sample irradiation. Using a 2(2) factorial design the authors found that the optimal conversion of urea, amino acids (alanine, aspartic acid, glycine, and serine), and methylamine for a reactor temperature of 44 degrees C occurred at pH 2.0 with a 24-hr irradiance period at concentrations <33 microM of organic nitrogen. Different decomposition mechanisms were evident: the photolysis of amino acids and methylamine released mainly ammonium (NH4+), but urea released a near equimolar ratio of NH4+ and nitrate (NO3-). The method was applied to measure DON in the extracts of aerosol samples from Tampa, FL, over a 32-day sampling period. Average dissolved inorganic (DIN) and DON concentrations in the particulate matter fraction PM10 were 78.1 +/- 29.2 nmol-Nm(-3) and 8.3 +/- 4.9 nmol-Nm(-3), respectively. The ratio between DON and total dissolved nitrogen ([TDN] = DIN + DON) was 10.1 +/- 5.7%, and the majority of the DON (79.1 +/- 18.2%) was found in the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) fraction. The average concentrations of DIN and DON in the PM2.5 fraction were 54.4 +/- 25.6 nmol-Nm(-3) and 6.5 +/- 4.4 nmol-Nm(-3), respectively.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Among the many concerns associated with global climate change, the potential effects on water resources are frequently cited as the most worrisome. In contrast, those who manage water resources do not rate climatic change among their top planning and operational concerns. The difference in these views can be associated with how water managers operate their systems and the types of stresses, and the operative time horizons, that affect the Nation's water resources infrastructure. Climate, or more precisely weather, is an important variable in the management of water resources at daily to monthly time scales because water resources systems generally are operated on a daily basis. At decadal to centennial time scales, though, climate is much less important because (1) forecasts, particularly of regional precipitation, are extremely uncertain over such time periods, and (2) the magnitude of effects due to changes in climate on water resources is small relative to changes in other variables such as population, technology, economics, and environmental regulation. Thus, water management agencies find it difficult to justify changing design features or operating rules on the basis of simulated climatic change at the present time, especially given that reservoir-design criteria incorporate considerable buffering capacity for extreme meteorological and hydro-logical events.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to probe the interactions between natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) and two xenobiotics, and to determine how DOM influences their bioavailability. The experimental set-up, using dialysis bags, was designed to expose test organisms to the same constant concentration of free dissolved chemical, while increasing the concentration of the bound-to-DOM fraction. Daphnia magna S. were exposed to pyrene or 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl in the presence of 0, 1, 2, 5, 10 or 20 mg L(-1) of a reference riverine humic acid (Suwannee River Humic Acid). The physico-chemical parameters were well constrained in the microcosm, demonstrating its potential usefulness. However bioaccumulation by D. magna showed important variability between replicate treatments, sufficient to mask any trends as a function of DOM concentration. The organic-carbon-normalised partition coefficients (K(OC)) ranged from 52000 to 92000 L kg(-1) for pyrene and from 8200 to 89000 L kg(-1) for 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl, with a marked "concentration effect" for the latter compound.  相似文献

Cumulative environmental change or cumulative effects may result from the additive effect of individual actions of the same nature or the interactive effect of multiple actions of a different nature. This article reviews conceptual frameworks of cumulative environmental change and describes analytical and institutional approaches to cumulative effects assessment (CEA). A causal model is a common theoretical construct, although the frameworks vary in their emphasis on different components of the model. Two broad approaches to CEA are distinguished: one scientific and the other planning oriented. These approaches should not be interpreted as competing paradigms but rather different interpretations of the scope of CEA. Each approach can provide a distinct but complementary contribution to the analysis, assessment, and management of cumulative effects. A comparison of the institutional and legislative response to CEA in Canada and the United States shows that Canada is following the American example of incorporating the analysis and assessment of cumulative effects into regulatory actions and administrative procedures that also govern environmental impact assessment.  相似文献

Phytoremediation is an emerging remediation technology that utilizes plants and microbes to clean up contaminated air, soil, and water. Tropical and subtropical environments have an advantage in that long plant‐growing seasons and increased soil temperature can accelerate phytoremediation processes. Various contaminated sites in Hawaii have been addressed using this technology. In this article, work progress and advances of phytoremediation are briefly reviewed and exemplified with seven chemically contaminated sites in Hawaii. The investigations were performed for one or more of the following remediation needs: explosive residues, hydrocarbons, pesticide residues, soil stabilization, and slaughterhouse wastewater. In this unique article, studies of testing of over 100 plant species for remediation are reviewed and documented. The general trend leads one to consider that salt‐ and/or drought‐tolerant plants can bear other potential stress‐inducing conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Organochlorines, metals, and trace elements were measured in liver, kidney, or whole-body tissues of canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria), lesser scaups (A. affinis), and greater scaups (A. marila) collected from San Francisco Bay and three coastal areas of California during the winter of 1986–1987. Potentially toxic concentrations of mercury (mean 10.4 µg/g, dry weight) and selenium (mean 32.7 µg/g, dry weight) were found in livers of scaups and canvasbacks from several San Francisco Bay sites. These elements varied spatially, temporally, and between species, with the highest concentrations found in late winter. Mean concentrations of mercury, selenium, and cadmium were generally higher in scaups than in canvasbacks. Of all the organochlorines included in the analyses, only p,p'-DDE and total PCBs were detected in all samples in this study. Mean whole-body concentrations of DDE and PCBs from San Francisco Bay ducks collected in late winter varied spatially and between species, but the concentrations were not considered toxic. Causes for inter-specific differences are unclear, but may be attributable to differences in diet, movement, or physiology.  相似文献
