Fish body size, a key driver of many aspects of fish population biology and ecology, is affected by fisheries that deplete the largest individuals. Rockfish (genus Sebastes) are a diverse group that has been heavily fished on the U.S. West Coast in recent decades. We examined trawl survey data from 1980 to 2001 to determine spatial and temporal trends in body size and density of 16 shelf rockfish species, including six that are considered overfished. Mean individual mass and maximum observed mass declined in the majority of species in one or more zoogeographic regions between central California and Washington. Density changes were far more variable in time and space, but in all regions, density declines were most often associated with large-bodied rockfish. We next estimated the impact of size and density changes on energy consumption and fecundity in a five-species rockfish assemblage that includes bocaccio (S. paucispinis), a large-bodied, overfished species. Indexes of both consumption and fecundity by the assemblage increased in the southern portion of the study area between 1980 and 2001 but decreased in the northern portion. Allocation of energy and reproductive potential within the assemblage shifted dramatically: relative to bocaccio, total energy consumption and fecundity indexes for the other four species increased by orders of magnitude from 1980 to 2001. These changes in community structure may affect the ability of bocaccio and other large rockfish species to recover from overfishing, especially in light of long-term declines in zooplankton production that may also be affecting rockfish size and production. Addressing these issues may require a regional, multispecies management approach.  相似文献

For the pilotproject ?Effect Monitoring — Biomonitoring of Immission Effects in the Testing Area of Munich”, standardized grass cultures were exposed at 19 locations during 10 series for two weeks each. The grass was analyzed for the accumulation of lead, antimony arsenic, cadmium, and copper. Highest accumulation was observed with antimony near traffic situations. The comparison of the results from the different sampling points identifies motor vehicle traffic as the source of antimony. First examinations of brake linings support this conclusion. Lead is only slightly increased near traffic. Immission-caused copper contents in the grass were found near the overhead tramway cables. The accumulation detection limits for arsenic and cadmium were not exceeded at any of the measuring points.  相似文献

In order to better formulate an artificial shrimp diet, the protein composition of shrimp was assessed and the essential amino acids determined. Penaeus aztecus were treated to remove lipids, carbohydrates and other interfering substances, and the protein was hydrolyzed to its constituent amino acids. The amino acids were then quantitatively analyzed by gasliquid chromatography as their trimethylsilyl derivatives. The essential amino acids were then determined. Shrimp were injected with 14C-labeled glucose and analyses performed to determine which amino acids then exhibited radioactivity, i.e., were synthesized from the labeled glucose. Those amino acids which were not manufactured from the glucose were categorized as essential.  相似文献

Gametogenesis was studied histologically in the deep-sea species Pourtalesia jeffreysi (Wyville Thomson), P. miranda (A. Agassiz) and Echinosigra phiale (Wyville Thomson) collected during 1973–1983 from various positions at depths of 1 040 to 2 921 m in the Rockall Trough. The gonads are small and no synchrony in terms of the stage of gametogenic development was evident in females of the latter two species collected at different times of the year, indicating nonseasonal breeding. Males appear to be ripe at all times of the year. Follicle cells were well developed around the developing oocytes. Both the size range of the yolky ripe eggs (173 to 357 m diam) and potential fecundity within the range of 1 000 to 4 000 oocytes per individual, are indicative of an abbreviated, indirect, lecithotrophic mode of development occurring in all three species. Pourtalesiid postlarvae occurred also in fine-meshed trawl hauls, and their morphology is described. It was not possible to distinguish between P. miranda and E. phiale at sizes <3 mm in length.  相似文献

In 1996 within a country-wide research project, the epiphytic lichen vegetation throughout Bavaria was mapped according to Guideline VDI 3799, Part I (1995). The data providing information about air quality was collected in 190 sites. Most of the sites demonstrated little to moderate pollution, while both very high and very low levels of air pollution could be found locally. The methods outlined in Guideline VDI 3799 were slightly modified and adapted to the situation in Bavaria. Comparison of the lichen vegetation on different species of trees showed that a rigid classification of tree species as proposed in the guideline is not necessary in Bavaria. The use of several species of trees per site has proven to be favourable. The influence of the natural heterogeneity of the air-quality index in the investigated area was examined. Here, the geology turned out not to be a crucial factor. With respect to climate, it is especially the alpine region with its high levels of precipitation that stands out against the other parts of Bavaria. The results from that area may not be freely compared to those from the remaining sites. It could be shown that the Guideline VDI 3799 is applicable for large-area lichen mapping in Bavaria.  相似文献

The ecotoxicological effect of rain water on the light-dependent, photosynthetical oxygen production of suspended protoplasts from the bean speciesVicia faba L. was used for the characterization of airborne immissions. The protoplast-biotest — with rain water samples taken in an agricultural area from March to July — showed a clear inhibition of the photosynthetical oxygen production. Simultaneously, chemical analyses on some herbicides were carried out. The concentrations determined, however, did not sufficiently explain the measured inhibition of oxygen production; so, the toxicity yielded was assumed to result from not-analyzed compounds as well as synergistic and additive effects of the rain water constituents.  相似文献

The spatial variation of the immission patterns of Cr, Fe, Pb and V in the region Leipzig-Halle is dicussed in terms of similarities as well as dissimilarities. The representation by isopleths enables the identification of areas with high and low air pollution. The immission patterns can be used as criteria to select areas suitable for in-field testing so that possible effects on fauna und flora and xenobiotic fluxes can be studied at representative sites. The comparison with literature data yields a first characterization of the ecotoxic potential of the heavy-metal immission for the region. By the principal component analysis a comparative evaluation of the spatial structure of all element contents is performed, which leads to conclusions about emission sources and the physicochemical behaviour of the elements.  相似文献

An earlier study showed large changes in ovarian phosphoprotein, a characteristic component of vertebrate yolk, during post-vitellogenic meiotic maturation (ripening) of ovaries of teleosts with pelagic eggs. Here, the study of four phosphorus-containing ovarian fractions is extended to other teleost families with pelagic eggs and to species with demersal eggs. Fishes were caught in the sea and lakes of western Scotland between 1982 and 1984. In the codGadus morhua, spratSprattus sprattus, dragonetCallionymus lyra, Norway poutTrisopterus esmarkii, saithePollachius virens, lingMolva molva and flounderPlatichthys flesus, all of which spawn pelagic eggs, the massive water influx during ripening which renders the eggs buoyant was accompanied by large changes in yolk phosphoprotein which were apparent as decrease or disappearance of protein phosphorus as conventionally determined. During ripening of the demersal eggs of the herringClupea harengus, both the water uptake and the decrease in protein phosphorus were less pronounced. In the three-spined sticklebackGasterosteus aculeatus, sea sticklebackSpinachia spinachia, sand gobyPomatoschistus minutus and perchPerca fluviatilis, little or no changes in water content or protein phosphorus both usually increased in species with pronounced water uptake and decreased in species with little or no water uptake. Lipid phosphorus showed little change in all species examined except herring, in which it increased. It is concluded that the characteristic changes in phosphoprotein and other phosphorus-containing fractions are most pronounced in species with pelagic eggs exhibiting massive water uptake on ripening, but are found to a lesser extent in species with demersal eggs in which considerable water uptake accompanies ripening.  相似文献

The addition of N2O5 to 1-hexene in synthetic air results in 1,2-hexanedioldinitrate and 2-hexanon-1-ol-nitrate as the main products and some -hydroxy-1-ol-nitrate. In the reaction with cyclohexene, cis/trans-1,2-cyclohexanediol-dinitrate and cyclohexene-1-on-2-ol-nitrate have been detected. The addition of NO3 to isoprene produces 4-nitrato-3-methylbutenal-2. The reaction of NO3 with methylenecyclohexane and sabinene in air results in 1-(methylnitrate) cyclohexane-1-ol and both epimers of 1-(methylnitrate)-4-(isopropyl) cyclo-hexene-4-ol, respectively. The main products of the addition of NO3 to - and β-pinene were probably rearranged compounds of the limonene type: -pinene produces 1-(methyl)-2-(nitrato)-4-(2-propane-2-ol)-cyclohex-1-ene and β-pinene produces 1-(methylnitrate)-4-(2-propane-2-ol)cyclohex-1-ene. Other rearrangements give rise to a variety of nitrates and ketonitrates of structures as yet unknown in the - and β-pinene systems.

The probably particle-borne addition of NO2 to -pinene, β-pinene and camphene in air produces 2-nitrolimonene, 7-nitrolimonene and nitrocamphene as the main reaction products.  相似文献

An eighteen-year-old clone of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr) growing in the field was used to evaluate the whole tree response of 'mature' Sitka spruce to acid mist treatment. The mist, an equimolar mixture of H(2)SO(4) and NH(4)NO(3) at pH 2.5 with or without particles (soda glass ballotini < 20 microm diameter), was applied twice weekly (equivalent to 4 mm precipitation week(-1)) throughout the growing season, May-November 1990-1992. The annual dose of S, N, H applied as mist (at 51, 48 and 3.3 kg ha(-1), respectively) was 2.5 times that measured in the Scottish uplands. Throughout the experiment there was no evidence of visible injury symptoms, yet there was a highly significant reduction (p < 0.02) in the stem-area increment relative to the stem area at the start, measured using vernier dendrometer bands. There was no significant difference between the (acid mist + particle) and the acid mist only treatments. The mean relative stem-area increment over two complete growing seasons (1991-1992) was 65% for control trees, but only 53% for acid-misted trees.  相似文献
