Groundwater contamination was characterised using a methodology which combines shallow groundwater geochemistry data from 17 piezometers over a 2 yr period in a statistical framework and hydrogeological techniques. Nitrate–N (NO3-N) contaminant mass flux was calculated across three control planes (rows of piezometers) in six isolated plots. Results showed natural attenuation occurs on site although the method does not directly differentiate between dilution and denitrification. It was further investigated whether NO3-N concentration in shallow groundwater (<5 m below ground level) generated from an agricultural point source on a 4.2 ha site on a beef farm in SE Ireland could be predicted from saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) measurements, ground elevation (m Above Ordnance Datum), elevation of groundwater sampling (screen opening interval) (m AOD) and distance from a dirty water point pollution source. Tobit regression, using a background concentration threshold of 2.6 mg NO3-N L−1 showed, when assessed individually in a step wise procedure, Ksat was significantly related to groundwater NO3-N concentration. Distance of the point dirty water pollution source becomes significant when included with Ksat in the model. The model relationships show areas with higher Ksat values have less time for denitrification to occur, whereas lower Ksat values allow denitrification to occur. Areas with higher permeability transport greater NO3-N fluxes to ground and surface waters. When the distribution of Cl was examined by the model, Ksat and ground elevation had the most explanatory power but Ksat was not significant pointing to dilution having an effect. Areas with low NO3 concentration and unaffected Cl concentration points to denitrification, low NO3 concentration and low Cl chloride concentration points to dilution and combining these findings allows areas of denitrification and dilution to be inferred. The effect of denitrification is further supported as mean groundwater NO3-N was significantly (P < 0.05) related to groundwater N2/Ar ratio, redox potential (Eh), dissolved O2 and N2 and was close to being significant with N2O (P = 0.08). Calculating contaminant mass flux across more than one control plane is a useful tool to monitor natural attenuation. This tool allows the identification of hot spot areas where intervention other than natural attenuation may be needed to protect receptors.  相似文献

A stratified sand filter column, operated in recirculation mode and treating synthetic effluent resembling high-strength dairy wastewaters was studied over a 342-d duration. The aim of this paper was to examine the organic, total suspended solids (TSS) and nutrient removal rates of the sand filter, operated in recirculation mode, under incrementally increasing hydraulic and organic loading rates and to propose a field filter-sizing criterion. Best performance was obtained at a system hydraulic loading rate of 10 L m(-2) d(-1); a higher system hydraulic loading rate (of 13.4 L m(-2) d(-1)) caused surface ponding. The system hydraulic loading rate of 10 L m(-2) d(-1) gave a filter chemical oxygen demand (COD), TSS, and total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) loading rate of 14, 3.7, and 2.1 g m(-2) d(-1), respectively, and produced consistent COD and TSS removals of greater than 99%, and an effluent NO(3)-N concentration of 42 mg L(-1) (accounting for an 86% reduction in total nitrogen (Tot-N)). As the proportional surface area requirement for the sand filter described in this study is less than the recommended surface area requirement of a free-water surface (FWS) wetland treating an effluent of similar quality, it could provide an economic and sustainable alternative to conventional wetland treatment.  相似文献

In Ireland, no database detailing the design, influent loading rates or performance of constructed wetlands (CWs) exists. On account of this, they are designed without any protocol based on empirical data. The aim of this paper was to provide the first published data on the performance of free-water surface flow (FWSF) CWs treating primary and secondary-treated municipal wastewater, and agricultural dairy soiled water (DSW) in Ireland. In total, the performance of thirty-four FWSF CWs, comprising fourteen CWs treating primary-treated municipal wastewater, thirteen CWs treating secondary-treated municipal wastewater, and seven CWs treating DSW, were examined. In most CWs, good organic, suspended solids (SS) and nutrient removal was measured. At an average organic loading rate (OLR) of 10 and 9 g biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) m(-2) d(-1), CWs treating primary and secondary wastewater removed 95 and 84% of influent BOD. Constructed wetlands treating DSW had an average BOD removal of 98%. At average SS loading rates of 6 and 14 g m(-2) d(-1), CWs treating primary and secondary wastewater had a 96 and an 82% reduction, and produced a final effluent with a concentration of 14 and 13 mg L(-1). Constructed wetlands treating DSW produced a final effluent of 34 mg L(-1) (94% reduction). Similar to other studies, all CWs examined had variable performance in ammonium-N (NH(4)(+)-N) removal, with average removals varying between 37% (for CWs treating secondary wastewater) and 88% (for CWs treating DSW). Variable ortho-phosphorus (PO(4)(3-)-P) removal was attributable to different durations of operation, media types and loading rates.  相似文献

Pronounced sperm dimorphism is reported for the first time in the prosobranch order Vetigastropoda. Using transmission electron microscopy, it is demonstrated thatZalipais laseroni Kershaw (Trochoidea: Skeneidae) produces uniflagellate euspermatozoa (eupyrene, fertile sperm) and multiflagellate paraspermatozoa (oligopyrene, infertile sperm). Euspermatozoa show the following features: (1) a conical acrosomal vesicle; (2) a long tubular, helically coiled nucleus; (3) a short midpiece (mitochondrial sleeve surrounding a 3µm-long electron-dense rod); (4) a chambered body (? fused centrioles) continuous with the dense rod of the midpiece; (5) a flagellum (characterized by an electron-dense sheath surrounding and partly obscuring the central pair of tubules). Paraspermatozoa are composed of an elongate head (lacking an acrosomal complex), a short midpiece (centriolar rods interspersed with mitochondria), and a posterior tuft of flagella. The head consists of a rodshaped anterior body and a condensed nuclear remnant — the latter lodged in a shallow invagination of the anterior body. Multiple flagella are attached via centriolar rods to a layer of dense material lining the nuclear remnant membrane. During paraspermatozoan development, the nucleus partially degenerates, then condenses, while the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), apparently assisted by the Golgi complex, is responsible for production of numerous, electron-dense secretory vesicles. These vesicles subsequently fuse to form the elongate, anterior body of the head region. The ability of at least one line of trochoid gastropods to produce an oligopyrene, multiaxonemal paraspermatozoon, suggests that the Caenogastropoda (with this feature) might have been derived from the Vetigastropoda rather than from any other archaeogastropod source.  相似文献

This paper appraises the potential of marine crustacean shell waste from the world's fishing industry for bioconversion to industrial products and envisages almost total low-waste utilisation of such materials. Techniques for the processing of waste shells are considered and compared. We additionally investigate what is considered a vital early stage in shell processing - the viability of a lactic acid fermentation on demineralised shell for deproteinisation under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. An integrated bioconversion scheme is proposed whereby protein, pigment (astaxanthin) and the main biopolymer constituent, chitin, can be isolated for industrial or commercial use. The scheme also suggests further conversion of the chitin to its monomer, N-acetylglucosamine, for use as a sugar or as a medium source for production of microbial biomass protein.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The water balance at a low-level radioactive-waste disposal site in northwestern Illinois was studied from July 1982 through June 1984. Continuous data collection allowed estimates to be made for each component of the water-balance equation independent of other components. The average annual precipitation was 948 millimeters. Average annual evapotranspiration was estimated at 637 millimeters, runoff was 160 millimeters, change in water storage in a waste-trench cover was 24 millimeters, and deep percolation was 208 millimeters. The magnitude of the difference between precipitation and all other components (81 millimeters per year) indicates that, in a similar environment, the water-budget method would be useful in estimating evapotranspiration, but questionable for estimation of other components. Precipitation depth and temporal distribution had a very strong effect on all other components of the water-balance equation. Due to the variability of precipitation from year to year, it appears that two years of data are inadequate for characterization of the long-term average water balance at the site.  相似文献

The marine amphipodAllorchestes compressa Dana, fed on the seagrassHeterozostera tasmanica, was exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn for 4 wk in flowing sea water, and the concentrations producing the minimum detectable decreases (the minimum effect concentrations, MECs) in average weight, survival and biomass (average weight × survival proportion) were estimated by interpolation from regression models. Survival and biomass were more sensitive than average weight as indicators of sublethal effects. The lowest values of MEC for Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn were 11, >250, 3.7 and 99µg 1–1, respectively. For Cu, this value fell below the minimum risk concentration (MRC) calculated from acute toxicity tests (LC50) and application factors (AF); for Cd, the MEC was similar to the MRC; for Cr and Zn, the MECs were well above the MRCs. The metal concentrations in the amphipods at the MECs were 46, >46, 364 and 139µg g–1 dry wt for Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn, respectively. Accumulation of the nutrient metals (Cr, Cu and Zn) showed some evidence of metabolic regulation, but the non-nutrient Cd was accumulated without regulation until the amphipods died. In general, those metals that were more highly accumulated by the amphipods were the more toxic.  相似文献

Spermiogenesis and spermatozoa of the marine gastropodHeliacus variegatus Gmelin were examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Mature spermatozoa are composed of an acrosomal vesicle, helical nucleus, elongate midpiece, annulus, glycogen piece and short end piece. The midpiece consists of a 9+2 axoneme, nine coarse fibres, and a banded helix, all enclosed by a continuous mitochondrial sheath (with multiple, helically coiled grooves). Anterior extensions of the mitochondrial sheath and banded helix form a double sheath around the basal half of the nucleus—an arrangement possibly unique in the Mollusca. During spermiogenesis, dense plaques delineating the anterior and posterior poles of the spermatid nucleus become attachment sites for the acrosomal vesicle and the axial complex (respectively). As the nucleus condenses and elongates, midpiece formation involves fusion of numerous, oblong mitochondria along the length of the axoneme. The coarse fibres and banded helix of the midpiece probably are derived through centriolar activity. Results of the study support inclusion of the Architectonicidae within the Heterobranchia, but in view of midpiece specializations, do not clarify the precise relationship of the family within this subclass.  相似文献

In a pilot test experiment involving approximately 200,000 gallons of groundwater, Electrochemical Peroxidation (ECP) was used to degrade aqueous phase volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds and methyl tertbutyl ether (MTBE) from a petroleum spill. ECP involves a form of the Fenton's Reagent reaction, which uses electrochemically generated iron and dilute hydrogen peroxide (<30 mg/L) to break down organic molecules through oxidation to carbon dioxide and water. This article discusses a pilot scale demonstration of the ECP technology and its application to aqueous phase organic contaminants. The remedial approach used at the pilot test site involves three phases: (1) ex‐situ chemical oxidation, (2) in‐situ oxidation by reinjection of treated effluent near the plume origin, and (3) reestablishment of aerobic biodegradation as the residual hydrogen peroxide discharged to a series of upgradient wells degrades to oxygen. Analytical results of the pilot demonstration indicate that the ex‐situ chemical oxidation reduced total BTEX concentrations in groundwater from over 1,000 ppb to undetectable concentrations (<1 ppb). © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
