Background, aim, and scope
Lungs are permanently and simultaneously challenged by airborne microorganisms and airborne pollutants. Temporal increase of airborne particulate matter (APM), a potential carrier for extractable organic matter (EOM), degrades the situation of pulmonary patients. The Ah receptor (AhR) has been described as an important factor influencing the immunological challenge by viral infections. Molecular mechanisms underlying epidemiological observations are not well understood. Cytokine secretion (IL-6, IL-8, and TGF-β) from human bronchial epithelial cells (Beas2B) was determined as an indicator for immune responses upon co-stimulation with an artificial analog of viral dsRNA [polyinosinic/polycytidylic acid, (PIC)] and EOM of Standard Reference Material 1649a (SRM). Rural areas in China suffer from various problems. The stagnating economic development and a lack of (sufficient) job opportunities and basic services, etc., lead to disadvantages for great parts of China's population. In this context, the transport sector plays a crucial role for the development of rural settlements. Although the degree of undersupply varies between villages, the situation of Chinese villages is often worsened by an insufficient developed transport sector. Regarding mobility in rural China, major constraints and therefore challenges are the difficult access to the transport infrastructure, bad road conditions and the lack of public transport systems. Improvements within the transport sector can be regarded as crucial for the economic and social development of (rural) China and should be carried out in a sustainable and holistic manner using participatory approaches. The aim should be the development of mobility strategies considering the specific needs within the field of transport, which shall have a decisive and positive impact on related sectors. This paper is based on experiences made during the 3 years lasting Sino-European research project SUCCESS (Sustainable Users Concept for China Engaging Scientific Scenario) that analyses the present and the potential future role of transport systems in selected rural areas of China. Referring to the case studies of three villages in rural China, some mobility-related projects that present a favourable impact not only on the transport sector but also on the social system and the economy shall be highlighted. Finally, based on the analysis, instruments and measures for the development of a pathway to a sustainable mobility in rural China will be outlined. 相似文献

In this work we measured a set of antioxidative and photoprotective compounds (chlorophylls, carotenoids, tocopherol, ascorbate
and glutathione), which were suggested previously as stress markers in conifer needles, at two spruce forest sites at different
elevation in Saxony, Germany. Most variables differed significantly between current and 1-year-old needles, but only the content
of the xanthophyll cycle per mg total chlorophyll and the oxidation state of glutathione were significantly different between
the sites. We applied principal component analysis (PCA) to address the question if underlying accumulated variables are similar
to the ones found in spruce needles across Alpine elevation profiles and/or for pines in Mediterranean ecosystems. Four principal
components (accumulated variables, PC) representing 68% of the total variance of the dataset were extracted. PC 1 encompassed
total chlorophyll, lutein, and β-carotene contents, PC 2 combined the epoxidation state of xanthophylls, ascorbate content
and redox state, and glutathione content, PC 3 represented the content of xanthophylls and the redox state of glutathione,
and PC 4 encompassed the content of α-carotene and the epoxidation state of xanthophylls. Only PC 3 was significantly different
between sites. The PCA structure shows many similarities to corresponding findings in studies on spruce in mountain forests
in the Alps and pines in Mediterranean systems. This corroborates the interpretation of PCs as indicative for underlying physiological
processes. However, separation of the two investigated sites by PCs was in the present case study not superior to the separation

The real burden of occupational diseases, specifically work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and its impact on workers’ productivity is not known. The situation is critical in developing countries where only cases that cause workers’ disability are recorded. In this study, the incidence of MSDs in Colombia was estimated by using the age and gender specific double incidence rate of repetitive strain injuries diseases in Finland for 2002. The results showed that the estimated number of MSDs recorded in Colombia during 2005 was 23,477 cases at the rate of 11.6 cases per 10,000 workers. The estimated total cost of these MSD cases relative to workers’ productivity was US $171.7 million, representing around 0.2% of Colombia’s Gross Domestic Product for 2005. The systematic appraisal of the incidence of MSDs and their associated cost on workers’ productivity are necessary in developing countries to reduce the costly impact on productivity and to increase workers’ well-being. 相似文献

Fitting generalised linear models (GLMs) with more than one predictor has become the standard method of analysis in evolutionary
and behavioural research. Often, GLMs are used for exploratory data analysis, where one starts with a complex full model including
interaction terms and then simplifies by removing non-significant terms. While this approach can be useful, it is problematic
if significant effects are interpreted as if they arose from a single a priori hypothesis test. This is because model selection
involves cryptic multiple hypothesis testing, a fact that has only rarely been acknowledged or quantified. We show that the
probability of finding at least one ‘significant’ effect is high, even if all null hypotheses are true (e.g. 40% when starting
with four predictors and their two-way interactions). This probability is close to theoretical expectations when the sample
size (N) is large relative to the number of predictors including interactions (k). In contrast, type I error rates strongly exceed even those expectations when model simplification is applied to models
that are over-fitted before simplification (low N/k ratio). The increase in false-positive results arises primarily from an overestimation of effect sizes among significant
predictors, leading to upward-biased effect sizes that often cannot be reproduced in follow-up studies (‘the winner's curse’).
Despite having their own problems, full model tests and P value adjustments can be used as a guide to how frequently type I errors arise by sampling variation alone. We favour the
presentation of full models, since they best reflect the range of predictors investigated and ensure a balanced representation

Purpose
The 'step-by step' principle was introduced into the European Union legislation on genetically modified organisms as a means to cope with uncertainty about environmental risks from the release of genetically modified organisms into the environment. The approval process is orientated along the stepwise reduction of containment which reflects a precautionary approach towards the risks of genetically modified organism release. Thus, the gradual reduction of containment should keep pace with the gradual generation of risk-related knowledge. This paper strives to clarify the meaning, legal status and practical importance of the principle. It also looks at whether non-European Union countries have adopted the principle as well, and how they practice it.Methods
The article is based on research of the relevant legal texts, court cases and legal literature. In addition, a number of dossiers of applications for the European Union authorisation of release and placing on the market of genetically modified seed were analysed.Results and conclusions
Although 'step-by-step' is not a precise legal rule it does have legal meaning as a principle guiding the risk assessment and management of genetically modified organism introduction into the environment. Assuming a process of gradual reduction of containment and scaling up of release ranging from closed systems via experimental release to cultivation the 'step-by-step principle' requires that the knowledge on environmental risks of genetically modified organisms should be generated on stages previous to the ones where the risk can result in damage. The striking ability of territory owners to repel intruders has generated a number of theoretical explanations as well as
experimental studies in many animal species. However, effects of individual habitat preferences on territorial defence have
rarely been studied. From the territory value hypothesis, we predicted that owners of preferred habitats should invest more
resources in defence than owners of non-preferred habitats. We tested this prediction with young territorial brown trout in
a two-stage experiment. First, trout were allowed to choose individually between gravel and a uniform bright substrate. As
expected, they showed a significant (79%) preference for gravel. However, there was considerable variation between individuals
in substrate preference, with a few fish preferring the bright substrate. Half of the tested fish were then transferred to
a gravel substrate and the rest to a bright substrate, manipulating habitat type in relation to preference. Territory owners
were then staged against size-matched intruders whereupon contest aggression was observed and the winner of each contest determined.
Overall, owners won most of the contests. Satisfied owners won 86% and owners of less preferred territories, 74% of the contests.
Furthermore, more satisfied owners attacked sooner and were more aggressive relative to the intruders. We conclude that brown
trout show individual variation in habitat preference, which appears to be linked with their investment in territorial defence.
These results suggest that understanding and modelling of animal contests could benefit from considering how territorial defence
is influenced by individual habitat preference and specialisation.

Queen pheromones interfere with worker reproduction in social insects. However, there is still an unresolved question as to
whether this pheromone acts as an “honest” signal for workers, giving a reliable indication of the queen’s reproductive value,
or as a suppressive agent, inhibiting worker reproduction independent of the queen’s reproductive capacity. In honeybees (Apis mellifera), the queen’s mandibular gland secretion, a mix of fatty acids and some aromatic compounds, is crucial for regulating the
reproductive division of labor in the colony inhibiting ovary development in workers. We quantified the mandibular gland secretions
of virgin, drone-laying, and naturally mated queens using gas chromatography to test whether the queens’ mating, ovary activation,
or the reproductive value for workers correlated with the composition of the secretion. Although the absolute amounts of the
“queen substance” 9-oxo-2(E)-decenoic acid (9-ODA) were similar among the three groups, the proportions of 9-ODA decreased
with increasing reproductive quality. Furthermore, the ratios of queen to worker compounds were similar in all three treatment
groups, irrespective of the reproductive capacity. A multivariate analysis including all six compounds could not separate
drone-laying queens from naturally mated ones, both with active ovaries but only the latter ensuring colony survival. We suggest
that the mandibular gland pheromones are unlikely to function as reliable indicators of queen reproductive value and rather
operate as an agent to suppress worker reproduction. This does not exclude the possibility that other “honest” pheromone signals
exist in the honeybee colony, but these would have to arise from other semiochemicals, which could be produced by both the
