Bats have been extensively studied with regard to their ability to orient, navigate and hunt prey by means of echolocation,
but almost nothing is known about how they orient and navigate in situations such as migration and homing outside the range
of their echolocation system. As volant animals, bats face many of the same problems and challenges as birds. Migrating bats
must relocate summer and winter home ranges over distances as far as 2,000 km. Foraging bats must be able to relocate their
home roost if they range beyond a familiar area, and indeed circumstantial evidence suggests that these animals can home from
more than 600 km. However, an extensive research program on homing and navigation in bats halted in the early 1970s. The field
of bird navigation has advanced greatly since that time and many of the mechanisms that birds are known to use for navigation
were not known or widely accepted at this time. In this paper I discuss what is known about orientation and navigation in
bats and use bird navigation as a model for future research in bat navigation. Technology is advancing such that previous
difficulties in studying orientation in bats in the field can be overcome and so that the mechanisms of navigation in this

Yellow starthistle (Centaurea solsitialis L.) is an invasive weed that creates problems for the management of Idaho's rangelands. A bioeconomic approach combined with an input-output economic model is used to estimate direct and secondary economic costs of the weed in relation to its interference with agricultural and non-agricultural benefits that rangelands provide. Direct economic costs of the infestations were estimated to be of 8.2 million '05 dollars per year, and secondary costs of 4.5 million '05 dollars per year, for a total of 12.7 million '05 dollars; agricultural related economic impacts accounted for 79% of this total cost, and non-agricultural for 21%. 相似文献

Different loci within the genome of a single species can potentially coevolve in a manner that is analogous to the Red Queen
process among species. The major factor driving this antagonistic coevolution among loci is intergenomic conflict, i.e., discord
between individuals that is mediated by two or more gene products that are derived from different gene loci. We conclude that
antagonistic coevolution is common among loci that code for social interactions, and that it has broad evolutionary implications,
especially in the context of speciation and sex chromosome evolution.

The importance of predators in controlling the densities of infaunal (>0.5 mm) organisms was investigated in the mesohaline region of the Upper Chesapeake Bay (USA) using field experiments. The role of predators in controlling infaunal density and community characteristics varied with habitat type, season (i.e., predator abundance) and developmental or successional stage of the community. Few infaunal species were adversely affected by predator exclusion. Species that increased greatly in abundance in the absence of predators (e.g. Eteone heteropoda, Streblospio benedicti, Nereis succinea, and juvenile Macoma balthica and Mya arenaria) lived near the sediment-water interface and had major population pulses from fall through spring. Species whose abundances increased moderately or were not affected by predator exclusion were deeper burrowing organisms (e.g. Heteromastus filiformis and adult Mya arenaria), or were relatively small organisms (e.g. Paraprionospio pinnata, Scolecolepides viridis and Peloscolex gabriellae) whose principal predators could be other members of the infauna. Life-span studies, using the laboratory mouse, are an efficient means for determining potential chronic toxicity of various materials. However, difficulties that affect the analysis of the data include (1) incomplete and missing observations due to canabilism or autolysis, (b) possible differences in overall mortality rate between treated and control populations that preclude assessments based upon observed final incidence, and (c) potential interaction between specific pathological states. Being aware of these difficulties does not eliminate their consequence, but careful attention to ascertaining the presence or absence of a disease state coupled with an assessment of its significance for each individual can allow greater confidence to be placed in data obtained from survival studies. The question of possible interaction between disease states is better approached experimentally by judicious use of serial killing to define age-specific disease prevalence.Many diseases are difficult to identify in animals as small as the mouse. At the other extreme, too much importance may be attributed to some disease states, not because of their lethality, but because of their ease of detection. One way to minimize the uncertainties introduced by conscious and unconscious observational bias is to adhere to a highly systematic tissue examination of every animal, regardless of condition of apparent cause of death. Through application of well-defined and stable diagnostic criteria a better appreciation can be obtained of the full spectrum of lethal and incidental pathologies observed in animals dying throughout the survival study. 相似文献

The chemical composition of inorganic granules found in parenchyma cells surrounding the midgut of adult Balanus balanoides (L.) was determined. X-ray microanalysis indicated the presence of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc in the granules. A quantitative analysis of granule-rich pellets isolated from the midguts of adult barnacles showed that the granules were composed mainly of zinc phosphate, the remaining elements being minor constituents only. 相似文献

Suspension feeding by a stalkless crinoid (Oligometra serripinna) was studied at Lizard Island, Australia, in 1985. The crinoids were placed in a laboratory flume with a slow, unidirectional current of seawater. Nutritive and non-nutritive particles (15 to 180 m) were introduced upstream from the crinoid, and feeding behavior was recorded at high magnifications on videotape for frame analysis. These direct observations showed that each intercepted particle (whether a dejellied clam egg, Sephadex bead or latex sphere) contacts a single, evidently adhesive tube foot and is rapidly transferred to the pinnular food groove by a bend of the tube foot. The tube foot bends in about 0.1 s and returns to its extended position in 1 to 2 s. Spheres less than 20 m in diameter cause only the intercepting tube foot to bend. In contrast, larger spheres cause the coordinated bending of the intercepting tube foot plus many of the neighboring tube feet: the stimulus spreads through the reacting group of tube feet at about 1 cm s-1. After transfer to the pinnular food groove, the nutritive particles (dejellied clam eggs) travel at about 1 cm min-1 to the arm axis and thence down the arm food groove at about 4 cm min-1 to the mouth; in contrast, non-nutritive particles (Sephadex beads and latex spheres) are discarded from the pinnular food groove between 1 and 30 s after capture. Tube-foot bending is presumably triggered when arriving particles (whether nutritive or non-nutritive) are detected by sensory cells in the tubefoot epithelium: mechanoreception by itself appears sufficient to initiate bending, although chemoreception may modify the reaction. Then, soon after captured particles have been transferred to the pinnular food groove, the crinoid discards those judged unsuitable (probably by contact chemoreceptors in the food-groove epithelium). Clam eggs with intact jelly layers temporarily hang up on tube feet they contact and then float away in the curent: the jelly evidently interferes with mechanoreception and/or chemoreception by the tube-foot epithelium. Some previous studies of crinoid feeding have suggested that particles are trapped in extensive nets or strands of mucus: we found no evidence for this in O. serripinna, which captures particles predominantly be the direct interception method of the aerosol filtration model. 相似文献

Effects of current speed on filtration during suspension feeding in Oligometra serripinna (Echinodermata: Crinoidea) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Suspension feeding by the crinod Oligometra serripinna was studied at Lizard Island, Australia, in 1986. Video recordings were made of 90-m particles interacting with the filter of the crinoid in a laboratory flow chamber. A complete census of particles was possible because both the capture event and the filter area could be defined unequivocally. Also, because O. serripinna is a passive suspension feeder, a census of partcles could be made at different ambient current speeds without interference due to active pumping by the crinoid. Experiments were run at seven current speeds from 0.9 to 13.3 cm s-1. Particles approaching the filter: (1) were captured, (2) passed through the filter without triggering a capture event, (3) passed through the filter after escaping from an unsuccessful capture event, or (4) were deflected around the filter. With increasing current speed, the proportion of deflections declined and the proportion of particles passing through rose: these results could be partially explained by the progressive widening of the spaces within the filter due to distortion of filter parts by the current. The proportion of captures (normalized to approaches) was comparatively low at 0.9 cm s-1, rose to a relatively constant maximum from 1.7 to 6.4 cm s-1, and then declined progressively at 9.5 and 13.3 cm s-1. These proportions were translated into capture rates for whole crinoids by taking into consideration both the encounters with particles and the reduction of filter area by distortion of body parts at higher speeds. When plotted against current speed, capture rate peaked at 6.4 cm s-1, which was close to the mean current speed that we measured on the reef in the microhabitat of O. serripinna. 相似文献

The least-cost-first extraction rule for deposits with different extraction costs previously has been shown to be invalid in general equilibrium. This paper demonstrates that this rule also does not hold in partial equilibrium when extraction capacity is limited. Necessary and sufficient conditions for several surprising extraction orders are presented. If extraction from a high-cost resource is constrained, it may be optimal to begin extraction from a high-cost deposit (or backstop) strictly before extracting from a lower-cost deposit. If extraction from a low-cost resource is limited, it may be optimal to exhaust a high-cost deposit strictly before the low-cost deposit is exhausted or to abandon extraction temporarily from a high-cost deposit and then to exhaust it later. The analysis demonstrates how extraction constraints affect the order of extraction and shows that certain cost reversals are caused by limited extraction capacity rather than by the general equilibrium definition of extraction costs. 相似文献

Although set-up costs are prevalent and substantial in natural resource extraction, it is known that a Walrasian competitive equilibrium cannot exist in simple extraction models with set-up costs. This paper demonstrates that this result is sensitive to the assumption of unlimited extraction capacity and derives sufficient conditions for existence. An equilibrium exists if extraction is limited such that each firm earns sufficient surplus to cover its set-up costs or if firms choose extraction capacity subject to non-increasing returns. The resulting competitive equilibrium price either grows at the rate of interest when total extraction is below industry capacity or is constant when industry capacity is fully utilized. In the equilibrium, identical deposits are opened simultaneously, and set-up costs for new deposits are incurred when the industry has excess capacity rather than when capacity is fully utilized. 相似文献
