In the Discussion, Nash et al. (2019) estimate the seasonal change in groundwater volume for a portion of the restored Sierra Nevada Meadow that we evaluated (Hunt et al. 2018) and use this estimate as an upper bound on the possible contribution to flow that is attributable to restoration. The authors conclude that raising the channel bed elevation and reconnecting the meadow floodplain most likely reduced summer streamflow. In contrast, we report at least a fivefold increase in baseflow from the meadow in the years following restoration. In addition, we observed that, after restoration, the previously intermittent stream below the meadow flowed continuously throughout the summer months, despite record drought conditions, and in 2015, the lowest snowpack on record. We suggest that the groundwater budget presented in the Discussion may not adequately represent conditions within the meadow because the authors extrapolate from 5 near‐channel groundwater wells across 62 ha of meadow and assume an area of influence that is approximately one‐sixth of the meadow area. We conclude that the conversion of an intermittent stream to perennial flow during drought conditions is a stronger check on our gauge data than the groundwater budget presented in the Discussion. 相似文献

Recent and past studies have documented the prevalence of pyrethroid and organophosphate pesticides in urban and agricultural watersheds in California. While toxic concentrations of these pesticides have been found in freshwater systems, there has been little research into their impacts in marine receiving waters. Our study investigated pesticide impacts in the Santa Maria River estuary, which provides critical habitat to numerous aquatic, terrestrial, and avian species on the central California coast. Runoff from irrigated agriculture constitutes a significant portion of Santa Maria River flow during most of the year, and a number of studies have documented pesticide occurrence and biological impacts in this watershed. Our study extended into the Santa Maria watershed coastal zone and measured pesticide concentrations throughout the estuary, including the water column and sediments. Biological effects were measured at the organism and community levels. Results of this study suggest the Santa Maria River estuary is impacted by current-use pesticides. The majority of water samples were highly toxic to invertebrates (Ceriodaphnia dubia and Hyalella azteca), and chemistry evidence suggests toxicity was associated with the organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos, pyrethroid pesticides, or mixtures of both classes of pesticides. A high percentage of sediment samples were also toxic in this estuary, and sediment toxicity occurred when mixtures of chlorpyrifos and pyrethroid pesticides exceeded established toxicity thresholds. Based on a Relative Benthic Index, Santa Maria estuary stations where benthic macroinvertebrate communities were assessed were degraded. Impacts in the Santa Maria River estuary were likely due to the proximity of this system to Orcutt Creek, the tributary which accounts for most of the flow to the lower Santa Maria River. Water and sediment samples from Orcutt Creek were highly toxic to invertebrates due to mixtures of the same pesticides measured in the estuary. This study suggests that the same pyrethroid and organophosphate pesticides that have been shown to cause water and sediment toxicity in urban and agriculture water bodies throughout California, have the potential to affect estuarine habitats. The results establish baseline data in the Santa Maria River estuary to allow evaluation of ecosystem improvement as management initiatives to reduce pesticide runoff are implemented in this watershed. 相似文献

This paper presents a global sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of the bromine chemistry included in the Model of Aqueous, Gaseous and Interfacial Chemistry (MAGIC) in dark and photolytic conditions. Uncertainty ranges are established for input parameters (e.g. chemical rate constants, Henry's law constants, etc.) and are used in conjunction with Latin hypercube sampling and multiple linear regression to conduct a sensitivity analysis that determines the correlation between each input parameter and model output. The contribution of each input parameter to the uncertainty in the model output is calculated by combining results of the sensitivity analysis with input parameters' uncertainty ranges. Model runs are compared using the predicted concentrations of molecular bromine since Br2(g) has been shown in previous studies to be generated via an interface reaction between O3(g) and Br(surface)? during dark conditions [Hunt et al., 2004]. Food limitation is likely to be a source of mortality for fish larvae in the first few weeks after hatching. In the laboratory,
we analyzed all aspects of foraging in cod larvae (Gadus morhua Linnaeus) from 5 to 20 d post-hatching using protozoa (Balanion sp.) and copepod nauplii (Pseudodiaptomus sp.) as prey. A camera acquisition system with two orthogonal cameras and a digital image analysis program was used to observe
patterns of foraging. Digitization provided three-dimensional speeds, distances, and angles for each foraging event, and determined
prey and fish larval head and tail positions. Larval cod swimming speeds, perception distances, angles, and volumes increased
with larval fish size. Larval cod swam in a series of short intense bursts interspersed with slower gliding sequences. In
94% of all foraging events prey items were perceived during glides. Larval cod foraging has three possible outcomes: unsuccessful
attacks, aborted attacks, and successful attacks. The percentage of successful attacks increased with fish size. In all larval
fish size classes, successful attacks had smaller attack distances and faster attack speeds than unsuccessful attacks. Among
prey items slowly swimming protozoans were the preferred food of first-feeding cod larvae; larger larvae had higher swimming
speeds and captured larger, faster copepod nauplii. Protozoans may be an important prey item for first-feeding larvae providing
essential resources for growth to a size at which copepod nauplii are captured.

Urban Flood Problems in Dhaka,Bangladesh: Slum Residents’ Choices for Relocation to Flood-Free Areas
This article applies a stated preference choice model to assess trade-offs that residents of two squatter settlements in Dhaka,
Bangladesh might consider if they were given choices for relocation to flood-free areas. The respondents were asked to choose
repeatedly from a set of choice cards, which displayed different configurations of financial incentives for relocation, such
as free or inexpensive land, loans or nonrepayable grants, and provisions for temporary or permanent employment opportunities.
The survey results indicated that despite extensive experience with flood problems, many residents of Mirpur and Vasantek
found that certain configurations of economic incentives were not attractive enough for them to relocate to flood-free areas.
At the same time, they would prefer a reduction in the risk of flooding at their current location. The economic incentives
that would best assist in increasing voluntary relocation of residents from their current locations included free land, nonrepayable
grants (Taka 20,000), and long-term employment opportunities. Further, differences in geographic location (i.e., Mirpur vs.
Vasantek), income levels, and membership in neighborhood communities were linked with the tendency of residents to stay at

Feeding dynamics of the Antarctic salps Ihlea racovitzai and Salpa thompsoni were studied in the Lazarev Sea in fall 2004, summer 2005–2006 and winter 2006. Pigment concentrations in the guts of both
species were positively correlated with ambient surface chlorophyll a (chl a). No evidence was found for salp clogging even at dense surface concentrations of up to 7 μg chl a L−1. However, gut pigment concentrations had a lower range than ambient pigment concentrations, suggesting that salps increased
retention times of ingested material in low-food environments. For medium-sized I. racovitzai and S. thompsoni, estimated individual daily rations reached 7–10 and >100% of body carbon in winter and summer, respectively. Daily respiratory
needs of I. racovitzai and S. thompsoni accounted for 28 and 22% of daily carbon assimilation based on pigment ingestion rates in winter, and for 2 and 1% in summer,
respectively. The grazing impact of the salp populations on the phytoplankton standing stock was negligible during all seasons
due to generally low salp densities. Fatty acid trophic biomarkers in the salps suggest high year-round contributions of flagellates
and modest contributions of diatoms to the salp’s diet. These markers showed low seasonal variability for I. racovitzai. The more pronounced seasonality of trophic markers in S. thompsoni were likely related to their generally deeper residence depth in winter linked to a seasonal alternation of sexual and asexual

Removing solids from slurry manure helps balance nutrients to plant needs and may increase soil infiltration rate toreduce loss of ammonia. The long-term effects of applying the separated liquid fraction (SLF) of dairy slurry with surface banding applicators are not well known. This 6-yr study compared the yield, N recovery, and stand persistence of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) receiving SLF at 300 (SLF300) and 400 (SLF400) kg ha(-1) yr(-1) of total ammoniacal N (TAN); whole dairy slurry (WS) at 200 (WS200), 300 (WS300), and 400 (WS400) kg TAN ha(-1) yr(-1); and mineral fertilizerat 300 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1). The slurries were applied four times per year by surface banding, a technique that reduces ammonia emission and canopy contamination. Grass yield and N uptake were significantly higher for SLF300 than WS300 atequivalent rates of TAN. At similar total N, yield and N uptake were much greater for SLF than WS (2 Mg DM ha(-1) and 75 kg N ha(-1), respectively). Apparent total N recoverywas 63% greater for SLF300 than WS300 due to less ammonia loss and less immobile N. The apparent recovery of total N was 31% higher for Fert300 than for SLF300. Yield and N uptake for SLF300 and WS300 were similar in Harvests 1 and4, but SLF had higher values under hot and dry conditions in Harvests 2 and 3. The only remaining wild population of the endangered Whooping Crane ( Grus americana ) winters in salt marsh habitats of the Texas (U.S.) coast. Whooping Cranes are known to respond and utilize nearby upland habitats after a tire treatment has been applied. We investigated several factors that may attract Whooping Cranes to recently burned sites at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge between 1982 and 1994 and whether cranes utilize upland habitats primarily in response to a recent fire treatment or whether they occur regularly on uplands regardless of burning. We evaluated the effect of different years, burn site location, date of burn, and acorn production on crane use of specific burn sites. Crane use was determined with ground surveys from 1982 through 1985 and from weekly aerial surveys between 1986 and 1994. Whooping Cranes used fire-treated upland habitats to a significantly greater extent than unburned sites. The response of cranes to recently burned sites was greatest immediately after fire treatment and declined with time. No significant difference was found in crane use of burned sites among different years. Similarly, time of burn and acorn production had no significant effect on crane use of fire-treated habitats. Crane use among specific burn units differed significantly. We suggest that Whooping Cranes may be using fire-treated upland habitats to feed on recently killed vertebrates and invertebrates plus recently exposed plant items. Because cranes primarily inhabit salt marsh habitats, the availability of alternate food sources may be of considerable importance, particularly during years when marsh foods are scarce. But because it appears that areas must be burned to facilitate use by Whooping Cranes, we suggest that the extent of prescribed burning be based on reduced availability of marsh food resources and not on acorn production estimates alone. 相似文献

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) has traditionally been implemented in areas with (semi) arid climates or limited access to potable water supplies; however, recent droughts in the humid southeastern United States have led to increased implementation of RWH systems. The objectives of this study were twofold: (1) present usage characteristics and performance results for four RWH systems installed in humid North Carolina (NC) as compared with systems located in arid/semiarid regions and (2) identify system benefits and modifications that could help improve the performance of RWH systems installed in humid regions of the world. For this study four RWH systems were installed in NC. Their usage was monitored for at least one year and compared with similar studies. Results revealed that dedicated water uses and usage characteristics for RWH systems in NC differed from those previously reported in the literature. Two of the systems studied met 100 and 61% of the potable water demand with designated uses of animal kennel flushing and greenhouse irrigation, respectively. The designated uses yielding the greatest potable water replacement were often seasonal or periodic, thus necessitating the need for identifying and implementing secondary objectives for these systems, namely, stormwater management. Otherwise, the expense and effort required to implement RWH systems in humid areas will most likely preclude their use. 相似文献
