Mercury entering wetland environments can be microbially methylated to methylmercury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the historical rate of mercury accumulation and distribution of total and methylmercury in soil profile of Louisiana coastal marshes. Two sediment cores each were taken from Louisiana freshwater marsh and salt marsh. Vertical accretion was determined using the 137Cs dating technique. Total and methylmercury were determined with depth in the soil profiles. The fresh marsh soil on a dry weight basis contained more total and methylmercury than the salt marsh. Average vertical accretion rates in freshwater marsh and salt marsh were 0.90 and 0.75 cm year(-1), respectively. Average total and methylmercury content (to a depth of 30 cm) was 140 and 4.19 microg kg(-1) and 80 and 1.34 microg kg(-1) for the fresh and salt marsh, respectively. Due to greater sediment input resulting in a higher bulk density the salt marsh contained more total mercury per m2 (to 30 cm depth) than the fresh water marsh (5340 microg m(-2) as compared to 2929 microg m(-2)). The amount of methylmercury per m2 to depth of 30 cm was approximately the same for each marsh.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: A multi-criteria approach to ground water quality monitoring network design is developed. The methodology combines multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) and modifications of geostatistical variance reduction analysis. Composite programming, a distance based optimization algorithm that employs a hierarchial structure, is used for the MCDM component of the design methodology. MCDM allows the consideration of numerous, often conflicting, design criteria. The methodology is useful for identifying the preferred combination of direct borehole and indirect geo-electric data. It also permits the use of prior information during initial stages of network development. Multi-variate kriging is employed to evaluate network performance using the combination of direct borehole data and indirect geoelectric data. Weighted measures of estimation variance are used as primary measures of performance, with the reduction in estimation variance being computed by the fictitious point method. Case study results demonstrate that the network design methodology can be used in both early and late phases of network development. It also leads to selection of the preferred combination and spatial orientation of direct and indirect data sources while considering cost-effectiveness and performance of alternative designs.  相似文献

Studies on health effects of air pollutants ideally define exposure through the collection of air samples in the participants' homes. Concentrations derived from these samples are then considered as an estimate for the average concentration of air pollutants in the homes. Conclusions drawn from such studies therefore depend very much on the validity of the measured air pollution concentrations. In this paper we analysed repeated BTEX and NO(2) measurements with a time period of several months lying between the two conducted home visits. We investigated the variability of their concentrations over time by determining correlation coefficients and calculating within- and between-home variances. Our population consisted of 631 homes of participants from two cohort studies within the framework of the German study on Indoor Factors and Genetics in Asthma. Air pollutants were measured using passive samplers both indoors and outdoors. The measured BTEX concentrations were poorly correlated, with Pearson's correlation coefficient r ranging from -0.19 to 0.27. Additionally, a considerable seasonal effect could be observed. A higher correlation was found for the NO(2) concentrations with r ranging between 0.24 and 0.55. For the BTEX, the between-home variance was bigger than the within-home variance, for NO(2) both variances were of about the same order. Our results indicate that in a setting of moderate climate like in Germany, the variability of BTEX and NO(2) concentrations over time is high and a single measurement is a poor surrogate for the long-term concentrations of these air pollutants.  相似文献

研究了不同控制条件(温度、Pb2+浓度、pH)对交联改性γ-聚合谷氨酸(γ-PGA)吸附重金属离子所形成的絮凝颗粒性质的影响,对于治理水中重金属污染的相关研究有一定参考价值。实验表明,C-L-γ-PGA絮凝吸附Pb2+的最佳温度段在30℃附近。随着交联度的增加,不同的Pb2+浓度影响絮凝颗粒的大小,当处于较低浓度时,静电引力成为影响絮凝颗粒粒径最主要的因素,当Pb2+浓度增加到一定程度时,重金属的吸附量成为絮凝颗粒的粒径的决定因素。溶液pH达到7附近时,能够形成粒径最大的絮凝颗粒,并出现了最大的Pb2+去除率。C-L-γ-PGA对其他重金属离子也有类似的吸附絮凝作用,且絮凝吸附强弱顺序为Cu2+>Cr3+>Pb2+>Hg2+。吸附絮凝颗粒的粒径反映了重金属被吸附之后分离的难易程度,因此研究不同条件对絮凝颗粒粒径的影响对重金属离子的吸附和去除有重要意义。  相似文献

Environmental constraints can limit a population to a certain size, which is usually called the carrying capacity of a habitat. Besides to this ‘external’ factor, which is mainly determined by the limitation of resources, we investigate here another set of population-intrinsic factors that can limit a population size significantly below the maximum sustainable size. Firstly, density-independent mortality is a prominent factor in all organisms that show age-related and/or accidental death. Secondly, in sexually reproducing organisms the sex ratio and the success of pairing is important for finding reproductive partners. Using a simple model, we demonstrate how sex ratio, mating success and gender-specific mortality can strongly affect the speed of population growth and the maximum population size. In addition, we demonstrate that density-independent mortality, which is often neglected in population models, adds a very important feature to the system: it strongly enhances the negative influence of unbiased sex ratios and inefficient pairing to the maximum sustainable population size. A decrease of the maximum population size significantly affects a population's survival chance in inter-specific competition. Thus, we conclude that the inclusion of density-independent mortality is crucial, especially for models of species that reproduce sexually. We show that density-independent mortality, together with biased sex ratios, can significantly lower the abilities of a population to survive in conditions of strong inter-specific competition and due to the Allee effect. We emphasize that population models should incorporate the sex ratio, male success and density-independent mortality to make plausible predictions of the population dynamics in a gender-structured population. We show that the population size is limited by these intrinsic factors. This is of high ecological significance, because it means that there will always be resources available in any habitat that allows other species (e.g., invaders) to use these resources and settle successfully, if they are sufficiently adapted.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Two simple interactive techniques are developed and illustrated by means of two different real-life examples in Thailand. The first technique, Evolutionary Sequential Multiobjective Problem Solving (ESEMOPS), is an open-ended algorithm designed for planning problems with discrete alternatives. ESEMOPS helps the decision making group (DMG) develop progressively a preference function over the alternatives. The algorithm follows an evolutionary “breeding” strategy to generate a small set of good alternative solutions. This heuristic search, which does not guarantee that the adopted ‘satisfactum’ is an efficient solution leads to plausible results when applied to the planning of the Mae Khlong-Chao Phraya interbasin water transfer and irrigation system. The second algorithm, Search Beam Method (SBM) is essentially a series of one-dimensional searches for an efficient point along a “beam” passing through a goal point. Repeated search towards displayed goal points is leading to a set of quasi non-dominated solutions. SBM is illustrated by the Ubol Ratana reservoir control problem with the two conflicting objectives of energy generation and irrigation water supply. Neither ESEMOPS nor SBM require that weights, utilities, or pairwise tradeoffs be assessed. These features have been very much appreciated by a real DMG presented with the two techniques.  相似文献
