Despite the increasing concern given to air quality in urban and industrial areas in recent years, particular emphasis on regulation, control, and reduction of air pollutant emissions is still necessary to fully characterize the chain emissions–air quality–exposure–dose–health effects, for specific sources. The Estarreja region was selected as a case study because it has one of the largest chemical industrial complexes in Portugal that has been recently expanded, together with a growing urban area with an interesting location in the Portuguese coastland and crossed by important road traffic and rail national networks. This work presents the first air quality assessment for the region concerning pollutant emissions and meteorological and air quality monitoring data analysis, over the period 2000–2009. This assessment also includes a detailed investigation and characterization of past air pollution episodes for the most problematic pollutants: ozone and PM10. The contribution of different emission sources and meteorological conditions to these episodes is investigated. The stagnant meteorological conditions associated with local emissions, namely industrial activity and road traffic, are the major contributors to the air quality degradation over the study region. A set of measures to improve air quality—regarding ozone and PM10 levels—is proposed as an air quality management strategy for the study region.  相似文献

 A long-term study of the effects of nutrient enrichment on coral reefs (ENCORE Experiment) was carried out at One Tree Island (23°30′S; 152°96′E), Great Barrier Reef, between 1992 and 1996. The experiment involved the addition of water-soluble nutrients to 12 microatolls which contained a range of organisms and were situated within the larger lagoon. Three replicates of each of three nutrient treatments (nitrogen, phosphorus, nitrogen plus phosphorus) and an untreated set of three control atolls were prepared using the 12 selected microatolls. As part of the larger ENCORE experiment, changes in the chemical composition of the alcyonacean soft coral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi Marenzeller (Octocorallia: Alcyonacea), placed in the treatment microatolls, were monitored for a 1 yr period in an attempt to detect any responses attributable to nutrient enrichment. Multivariate analyses were performed to determine whether there were any patterns of response in the different nutrient treatments. At the level of individual metabolites, there were no clear treatment effects. However, the ratio of bioactive or stress metabolites (terpenes) to energy storage metabolites (lipids), referred to as the “physiological-change indicator”, revealed effects of nutrient enrichment. Nitrogen enrichment resulted in a trend towards higher physiological-change indicators than control or phosphorus treatments in the majority of cases, while phosphorus enrichment significantly decreased the ratio relative to controls. In most cases, the physiological-change indicator increased in soft soft corals relocated into contact with the scleractinian Pocillopora damicornis. Knowledge about phytoplankton communities is important for aquaculture due to their influence on environmental variables. The goal of the study was to evaluate the ecological effect of seaweed Gracilaria birdiae at three different densities: 2.5 (LG2.5); 5.0 (LG5.0) and 7.5?kg m?3 (LG7.5), on water quality variables and the phytoplankton communities in integrated aquaculture systems (shrimp and seaweed) with a control (without seaweed) (LB) using biofloc technology. Settleable and total suspended solids were significantly correlated with the phytoplankton groups. In addition, orthophosphate was the main variable controlling phytoplankton growth and gross primary production. No significant differences were identified among the treatments in terms of the phytoplankton assemblages (p?>?0.05) but differences were found between the communities (ANOSIM, R global?=?0.873) in relation to the days of the experiment. However, the LG2.5 treatment had higher diversity and lower species dominance, as well as higher productivity and final shrimp weight. The results indicate that seaweed inhibit phytoplankton growth, mainly of toxic species. They suggest that phytoplankton composition in integrated aquaculture systems in the presence of seaweed at a density of 2.5?kg m?3 is more diversified and provides better water quality and shrimp performance by inhibiting the abundance of harmful species.  相似文献
