Speciation as a screening tool for the determination of heavy metal surface water pollution in the Guadiamar river basin 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The Guadiamar river basin has traditionally received pollutants from two main sources: in its northern section of mining origin, and in its southern section (next to Do?ana National Park) from urban-industrial and agricultural sources. In April 1998, the spill of 6 million m3 of mining wastes (acidic waters and sludge) severely polluted the Guadiamar river basin with heavy metals, which caused serious damage to the local ecosystem. There is a direct association between the physicochemical speciation of an element and its toxicity, biological activity, bioavailability, solubility, etc. This work describes a distribution study of the metals Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu by speciation analysis of surface waters in eleven sampling points of the Guadiamar river basin. Four metal fractions were determined using anodic stripping voltammetry: labile metal forms, H+ exchangeable metal forms, strongly inert forms (associated with organic and inorganic matter in solution), and forms associated with suspended matter. Total concentrations in surface waters followed the trend Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. The speciation study showed that Zn and Cd were present to a large extent in available forms (labile and H+ exchangeable), while Pb and Cu were found mostly in the less available forms (strongly inert). Moreover, the available forms were found in the northern section (mining pollution) and the strongly inert forms in the southern section (urban, industrial and agricultural pollution). To examine the effects of environmentally realistic fipronil concentrations on estuarine ecosystems, replicated mesocosms containing intact marsh plots and seawater were exposed to three treatments of fipronil (150, 355, and 5000 ng/L) and a Control. Juvenile fish (Cyprinidon variegatus), juvenile clams (Mercenaria mercenaria), oysters (Crassostrea virginica), and grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) were added prior to fipronil in an effort to quantify survival, growth, and the persistence of toxicity during the planned 28-day exposure. Results indicated that there were no fipronil-associated effects on the clams, oysters, or fish. Shrimp were sensitive to the highest two concentrations (40% survival at 355 ng/L and 0% survival at 5000 ng/L). Additionally, the highest fipronil treatment (5000 ng/L) was toxic to shrimp for 6 weeks post dose. These results suggest that fipronil may impact shrimp populations at low concentrations and further use in coastal areas should be carefully assessed. 相似文献

A two-stage methanotrophic bioreactor system was developed for remediation of water contaminated with TCE and other chlorinated, volatile, aliphatic hydrocarbons. The first stage of the reactor was a suspended-growth culture vessel using a bubbleless methane-transfer device. The second stage was a plug-flow bioreactor supplied with contaminated groundwater and cell suspension from the culture vessel. The test objectives were to determine the applicability of microbial culture conditions reported in the literature for continuous, pilot-scale TCE treatment; the technical feasibility of plug-flow bioreactor design for treatment of TCE; and the projected economic competitiveness of the technology considering the cost of methane for growth of methanotrophs. The methanotrophic organism used in the study was Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b. Information on system operation was obtained in bench tests prior to conducting the pilot tests. In bench- and pilot-scale tests, variability in the degree of TCE degradation and difficulty in maintaining the microbial culture activity led to short periods of satisfactory biotreatment. Further development of the microbial culture system will be required for long-term operation. During transient periods of high TCE degradation activity, the bioreactor concept proved feasible by exhibiting both a high degree of TCE biodegradation (typically about 90% at influent TCE concentrations of 0.5-4 ppm) and a close approximation to first-order reactor kinetics throughout the length of the reactor. Actual methane usage in the pilot-scale reactor resulted in projected methane costs of $0.33 per 1000 gallons of water treated. This cost theoretically would be reduced by system modifications. There are important linkages between the health of humans and theenvironment, restoration of degraded lands, and long-term stewardship of public lands, yet most environmental indicators deal only with assessing the physical and biological aspects ofecosystems. In this article, we examine the ratings of perceptionsof several environmental problems for their utility as indicatorsof environmental quality, and examine perceptions of future land use by people interviewed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, near the Department of Energy's (DOE) Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Overall, people with lower incomes rated environmental problems as more severe than others, were more willing to spend federal funds to solve them, and were consistent in their ratingsof severity of environmental problems and their willingness to spend federal funds. Cleaning up LANL and other Department of Energy sites, received the highest rating for expenditure of federal funds. The highest rated future uses for DOE sites were for recreation and for National Environmental Research Parks. People with less education generally gave higher ratings to mostfuture land uses for DOE than did those with more education. However, those with higher education gave higher ratings to nuclear reprocessing, and nuclear material storage. Where there were differences, the people interviewed at Santa Fe rated all environmental problems (except pesticides) as more severe than did those previously interviewed in Albuquerque (located fartherfrom the LANL site), and they were more willing to spend federalfunds on these problems. Ratings for all future land uses did notdiffer between the Santa Fe and Albuquerque respondents. These perception-based indicators show general agreement among peopleliving close and farther away from LANL with respect to cleaningup LANL and the future land uses for the site. Particle light scattering and PM2.5 (particles with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 m) concentration data from air quality studies conducted over the past ten years wereexamined. Fine particle scattering efficiencies were determinedfrom statistical relationships among measured light scattering and fine and coarse mass concentrations. The resulting fine particle scattering efficiencies ranged from 1.7 m2 g-1at Meadview in the Grand Canyon to over 5 m2 g-1 in Mexico City. With respect to sustainable development, the leachability of trace metal from solid materials in contact with water has focused much attention over the years. Portland cements produced in industrial kilns generally contain from 10 to 300 mg/kg of trace metals. The behaviour of these endogenous metals has been, in this regard, the target of different leaching studies. Many of these researches concluded that heavy metals release are lower than analytical detection limits. Although satisfying from an environmental point of view, it induces a lack in the knowledge about the trace metals behavior during the leaching of cement based material. Accordingly, we designed the CTG-LEACHCRETE device, a dynamic leaching system (modified Soxhlet type) that overcomes this difficulty and allows long term monitoring. PURPOSE: This scientific review provides a summary of the evidence regarding the benefits of reducing the illegal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for driving and providing a case for enacting a .05 BAC limit. RESULTS: Fourteen independent studies in the United States indicate that lowering the illegal BAC limit from .10 to .08 has resulted in 5-16% reductions in alcohol-related crashes, fatalities, or injuries. However, the illegal limit is .05 BAC in numerous countries around the world. Several studies indicate that lowering the illegal per se limit from .08 to .05 BAC also reduces alcohol-related fatalities. Laboratory studies indicate that impairment in critical driving functions begins at low BACs and that most subjects are significantly impaired at .05 BAC. The relative risk of being involved in a fatal crash as a driver is 4 to 10 times greater for drivers with BACs between .05 and .07 compared to drivers with .00 BACs. SUMMARY: There is strong evidence in the literature that lowering the BAC limit from .10 to .08 is effective, that lowering the BAC limit from .08 to .05 is effective, and that lowering the BAC limit for youth to .02 or lower is effective. These law changes serve as a general deterrent to drinking and driving and ultimately save lives. OBJECTIVE: The attitudes of patients towards driving a car while taking medication with psychotropic side effects is unclear. A growing number of patients use these psychotropic medicines on a daily basis, and this may interfere with their ability to drive a car. METHODS: By means of a survey, we examined attitudes towards driving while using psychotropic medicinal drugs and the effect of warning labels on the decision whether to drive a car or not in patients with chronic pain. RESULTS: Fifty-eight of 100 patients possessing a driver's license used psychotropic medication. Despite warning labels affixed on the packages that these drugs might impair driving ability, the majority (71%) of these patients continued driving a car. A point of concern is that 40% of these patients reported not to be more cautious in traffic after taking psychotropic drugs. CONCLUSION: The results of this survey indicate that drug warning labels applied by Dutch pharmacies do not significantly change attitudes towards driving a car in patients taking medicinal drugs with psychotropic side effects. Future road-safety campaigns should pay more attention to the impairing effects of psychotropic drugs on driving. 相似文献

Minerals on earth whose crystalline order has been reduced by radioactive decay of contained atoms are termed “metamict.”
They are rare and few because in most crystalline solids, atoms and vacancies are relatively mobile at terrestrial temperatures,
and radiation damage tends to be self-annealing. This is not the case in the extreme cold of deep space. Below roughly 100 K,
reduced vacancy mobility allows cosmic ray and solar wind induced lattice defects to endure and accumulate for eons, reaching
energy densities of up to MJ kg−1 in some materials. We examine the possible effects of the release of energy stored in cold deep-space materials when solid-state
defects recombine upon warming due to impacts, gravitational infall, or perihelion. Dimensional analysis suggests energetic
defect recombination in radiation-damaged “xenomict” solids in comets, and planetesimals may, in some circumstances, raise
internal temperatures enough to melt ice and volatilize frozen gases. We speculate that this may account for some cometary
outbursts and Deep Impact experiment results. Calorimetric experiments on appropriately irradiated natural and synthetic materials

The insecticide gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH or lindane), which has been extensively used for agricultural and medical purposes, presents high persistence and toxicity to the environment and low solubility. This study intends to assess the efficiency of an anaerobic reactor to degrade HCH isomers contained in soil slurry cultures. This study was developed in two phases: experiments in flasks to optimize the process parameters, and assessment of the slurry process in the anaerobic slurry reactor operated for an approximate period of a year. The influence of different environmental conditions was evaluated: the HCH concentration (25-100 mg HCH kg-1), the type of substrate (volatile fatty acids or starch), the sludge concentration (2-8 g VSS l-1) and the replacement of spiked soil to simulate a fed-batch operation (10-50%). The best results were obtained when the reactor was operated with a sludge concentration of 8 g VSS l-1, starch concentration of 2 g COD l-1 and soil replacements of 10-20%. Under these conditions, alpha- and gamma-HCH were completely degraded after 10d while nearly 90% beta- and delta-HCH were removed only after 50 d. According to the obtained results related to the total degradation of the HCH isomers and the degradation rates, especially high for alpha- and gamma-HCH, the anaerobic slurry reactor appears to be a good alternative for the degradation of the HCH isomers present in polluted soil. 相似文献
