Excessively high soil P can increase P loss with surface runoff. This study used indoor rainfall simulations to characterize soil and runoff P relationships for five Midwest soils (Argiudoll, Calciaquaoll, Hapludalf, and two Hapludolls). Topsoil (15-cm depth, 241-289 g clay kg(-1) and pH 6.0-8.0) was incubated with five NH4H2PO4 rates (0-600 mg P kg(-1)) for 30 d. Total soil P (TPS) and soil-test P (STP) measured with Bray-P1 (BP), Mehlich-3 (M3P), Olsen (OP), Fe-oxide-impregnated paper (FeP), and water (WP) tests were 370 to 1360, 3 to 530, 10 to 675, 4 to 640, 7 to 507, and 2 to 568 mg P kg(-1), respectively. Degree of soil P saturation (DPS) was estimated by indices based on P sorption index (PSI) and STP (DPSSTP) and P, Fe, and Al extracted by ammonium oxalate (DPSox) or Mehlich-3 (DPSM3). Soil was packed to 1.1 g cm(-3) bulk density in triplicate boxes set at 4% slope. Surface runoff was collected during 75 min of 6.5 cm h(-1) rain. Runoff bioavailable P (BAP) and dissolved reactive P (DRP) increased linearly with increased P rate, STP, DPSox, and DPSM3 but curvilinearly with DPSSTP. Correlations between DRP or BAP and soil tests or saturation indices across soils were greatest (r > or = 0.95) for FeP, OP, and WP and poorest for BP and TPS (r = 0.83-0.88). Excluding the calcareous soil (Calciaquoll) significantly improved correlations only for BP. Differences in relationships between runoff P and the soil tests were small or nonexistent among the noncalcareous soils. Routine soil P tests can estimate relationships between runoff P concentration and P application or soil P, although estimates would be improved by separate calibrations for calcareous and noncalcareous soils.  相似文献

The presence of heavy metal concentrations was examined in surface sediments from 27 sites within the Odiel river in the southwest Spain suffering inputs from industrial and mining activities. The interest is specially focused on the final delta located in the Odiel Natural Park, which constitutes a feeding ground of international importance for migrating birds. The behavior of 10 heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, Fe, Hg) is conditioned by chemical properties of sediments such as acidity and carbonate or the presence of sulfate Very acidic sediments in the medium course of river contribute to the lower presence of metal as a consequence of leaching process. However, tidal action raises the pH in the marshes of the delta with correlative metal accumulation. In accordance with the Müller [Umschan 79 (1979) 133-149] scale for geoaccumulation index, the entire watercourse could be considered polluted by Zn and Pb, while Cu exhibits a high presence in the delta marshes of the river.  相似文献

Two typical areas, including once commercial and residential quarters of Nanjing, China, were studied by investigating soil properties especially heavy metals of soils in various cultural layers formed in different Chinese Dynasties. The age of the soil profiles was dated by both archaeological and 14C chronological methods. The results showed that urban soils in the old commercial/workshop quarter of Nanjing were generally contaminated by heavy metals Cu, Zn, Pb, but their concentration levels varied significantly among the cultural layers formed in different dynasties. The substantial increase of heavy metals appeared in three historical periods, i.e., South Dynasty (222-589 AD), the earlier Ming (1368-1644 AD) and the late Qing (1644-1912 AD) in one area. The tremendous input and storage of heavy metals in soils was explained by the primitive smelting and the strengthened metal processing activities, which might be due to the requirement of weapon making or other industries, in the changing social conditions of the corresponding periods. Soils in the once noble political, cultural centers did not show significant increase of heavy metals. The difference in the distribution pattern of heavy metals revealed the contrasting history of the site uses. The change of contaminant level in soils is believed to be a reflection of various human activities in the city during the past 20 centuries.  相似文献

The new European Directive for water intended for human consumption has established a regulatory level for bromate at 10 microg L(-1). This Maximum Admissible Concentration requires analytical methods with detection limits of a least 2.5 microg L(-1). A project funded by the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme of the European Commission has enabled the improvement and/or development of methods for the determination of bromate at such concentration levels. This collaborative work was concluded by the organisation of an interlaboratory trial involving 26 European laboratories, which enabled the testing of both a draft ISO Standard method and alternative methods. This paper presents the results of this interlaboratory trial, along with results of a bromate stability study. The progress made with respect to the analytical state-of-the-art for bromate will greatly benefit the quality of measurements carried out in water quality monitoring.  相似文献

The sorptive behaviour of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is critical to controlling their transport, fates and effects in the environment. Experiments are described which detail the behaviour of a model compound (benzo(a)pyrene) under simulated aquatic conditions. The kinetics of sorption were comparable to those of other PAH compounds. The sorption equilibrium was extensively studied and found to be affected by several key parameters, notably sediment concentration. The sorption coefficient decreased substantially with the sediment concentration, from 9580 ml g(-1) at a sediment concentration of 0.067 g l(-1) to 1,110 ml g(-1) at a sediment concentration of 9.8 g l(-1). The results are consistent with previous reports and often explained by the presence of colloids. In this paper the dry weight concentration of colloids was determined and used for deriving the true sorption coefficient, which is up to an order of magnitude higher than the observed partition coefficient. The sorption of benzo(a)pyrene was also dependent on some of the particle properties, and the sorption coefficient was found to increase with the organic carbon content and specific surface area of sediment particles. The desorption of benzo(a)pyrene from sediment was shown to be relatively rapid, with implications for the potential remobilisation of benzo(a)pyrene and similar compounds.  相似文献

The Sydenham River in southwestern Ontario is located in the Mixedwood Plains Ecozone, which supports the greatest diversity of flora and fauna in Canada. The river historically supported a rich aquatic community that included 80 fishes and 34 species of freshwater mussels. Fourteen aquatic species native to the river (8 fishes, 5 mussels and 1 turtle) have been designated as endangered, threatened, or of special concern by the Committee on the Status of Species at Risk in Canada (COSEWIC). A multi-agency Recovery Team was formed in 1999 to ensure the continued survival of these and other rare species in the river. The Sydenham River Recovery Team is the first in Canada to adopt an ecosystem approach to recovery planning for aquatic species. Information on land use patterns, water quality trends, the physical condition of the river, and the distributions of aquatic species at risk was synthesized to gain an understanding of the overall health of the river and its major anthropogenic stresses. Seven of the species at risk have declined in distribution or abundance, and three may be extirpated. The main threat to fishes and mussels is heavy loadings of sediment, nutrients, and possibly pesticides to the river via tile drainage and overland runoff from agricultural lands. A strategy that incorporates four overall approaches (management, stewardship, research and monitoring, and awareness and outreach) was developed to recover and protect this globally significant freshwater ecosystem.  相似文献

In order to get an overall picture of the environmental impact of an old municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) from S. Adrià del Besòs (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain), a monitoring program addressed at determining the levels of a number of pollutants in the vicinity of the facility was initiated in 1998. In March 1999, an adaptation was carried out due to EU legislation on pollutant emissions from the stack. As a result, emissions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were notably reduced, and a significant (30%) decrease was found in the levels of PCDD/F in herbage samples collected in the vicinity of the MSWI. In March 2001, herbage samples were collected at the same sampling points and the PCDD/F levels measured again. The current PCDD/F concentrations range from 0.23 to 1.43 ng I-TEQ kg(-1) (dry matter), with median and mean values of 0.58 and 0.66 ng I-TEQ kg(-1) (dry matter), respectively, while in the 2000 survey the PCDD/F concentrations ranged from 0.22 to 1.20 ng I-TEQ kg(-1) (dry matter), with median and mean values of 0.57 and 0.61 ng I-TEQ kg(-1) (dry matter), respectively. Although the current PCDD/F concentrations in herbage samples are comparable to those found in recent surveys carried out in various places of Catalonia, an exhaustive evaluation of the data, including principal component analysis, indicates that other emission sources of PCDD/Fs also have a notable environmental impact on the area under direct influence of the MSWI.  相似文献

This study explores ecological vulnerability to land-use change in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Region by spatially extrapolating land and economic development, and overlaying these projections with maps of sensitive ecological resources. As individual extrapolations have a high degree of uncertainty, five methods with different theoretical bases are employed. Confidence in projections is increased for counties targeted by two or more projection methods. A county is considered at risk if it currently supports three or more sensitive resources, and is projected to experience significant growth by the year 2010 by two or more methods. Analysis designated 19 counties and two cities as at risk, highlighting within a large region the priority areas where state and regional efforts would contribute the most to integrating environmental considerations into the process of land development. The study also found that potentially severe ecological effects of future land-use change are not limited to the outskirts of major urban areas. Recreational demands on smaller communities with mountain and coastal resources are also significant, as are initiatives to promote economic development in rural areas of high ecological quality. This approach provides a comprehensive overview of potential regional development, leading to an objective prioritization of high-risk areas. The intent is to inform local planning and decision-making so that regional and cumulative ecological degradation are minimized.  相似文献

In order to control the quality of butyl- and phenyltin compound determinations in sediment, the Standards, Measurements and Testing Programme (formerly BCR) of the European Commission has started a project, the final aim of which is to certify a freshwater sediment for its contents of a range of organotin compounds (mono-, di- and tributyltin, and mono-, di- and triphenyltin). The first part of this project involved an interlaboratory study which aimed to test the feasibility of preparation of candidate freshwater sediment reference material and to detect and remove most of the pitfalls observed in organotin determinations. This paper presents the main results of this interlaboratory study carried out prior to the certification campaign. The agreement obtained among laboratories for the six compounds determined was considered to reflect the state-of-the-art and was encouraging enough to decide upon the organisation of a certification campaign, which will be concluded in June 1999.  相似文献

Net photosynthesis (Pn) and mean stomatal conductance (gs) of soybean (Glycine max (M.) L.) cvs 'Dare', 'Essex' and 'Williams 82' were inhibited by exposure to 200 nliters liter(-1) ozone (O(3)) for 4 h. Changes in gas exchange rates were not uniform over time, and a near steady state condition was attained after fumigation for 2 h. There was no recovery of Pn or gs for up to 2 h following termination of O(3) application. The cv 'Dare' was considered most sensitive to O(3) since, in this cultivar, gs was least responsive during the initial 2.5 h of fumigation and the estimated internal O(3) flux was about 10% greater than in the other cultivars. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of soybean leaf extracts, followed by activity staining for superoxide dismutase (SOD), revealed the presence of numerous major and minor bands. Cynide sensitivity of several isoforms indicated the presence of both Cu-Zn and Mn SODs. In cv 'Essex', each metalloform accounted for 50% of the total SOD activity. No qualitative differences in SOD banding patterns were evident among the three soybean cultivars before or after O(3) treatment. Ozone fumigation for 4 h did not significantly alter SOD activity in any cultivar. The contribution of gs, as a flux limitation, and SOD activity are discussed as tolerance mechanisms to O(3) in soybean.  相似文献
