During tandem runs, one ant worker recruits another to an important resource. Here, we begin to investigate how dependent
are tandem leaders and followers on visual cues by painting over their compound eyes to impair their vision. There are two
ways in which Temnothorax albipennis might use vision during tandem running. First, the follower might track the movements of the leader by keeping it in sight.
Our results suggest that the ants do not use vision in this way. For example, in all four classes of tandem run (those with
either leader or follower, both, or neither of their participants with visual impairments) progress was most smooth at about
3 mm/s. This suggests that communication between leaders and followers during tandem runs is not based on vision and is purely
tactile and pheromonal. Second, the leader and the follower might be using vision to navigate and our results support this
possibility but also suggest that these ants have other methods of navigation. Ants with visual impairments were more likely
to follow than to lead, but could occupy either role, even though they had many fully sighted nestmates. This might help to
explain why the ants did not focus grooming on their most visually impaired nestmates. Wild-type tandem runs, with both participants
fully sighted and presumably taking time to learn landmarks, were overall significantly slower, smoother, and a little less
tortuous, than the other treatments. All four classes of tandem run significantly increased mean instantaneous speeds and
mean absolute changes in instantaneous acceleration over their journeys. Moreover, tandems with sighted followers increased
their speed with time more than the other treatments. In general, our findings suggest that eyesight is used for navigation
during tandem running but that these ants also probably use other orientation systems during such recruitment and to learn

In many songbirds, individuals have repertoires of multiple song types, some of which may be shared with others in the local area. Hypotheses about the evolution of song repertoires differ as to whether selection acts primarily on repertoire size itself or the ability to match songs of neighbours. We used a 16-channel acoustic location system to record neighbourhoods of song sparrows (Melospiza melodia melodia) during the dawn chorus. We asked whether males sing all songs with similar frequency as predicted by the Repertoire Size Hypothesis, whether males preferentially sing highly shared songs as predicted by the General Sharing Hypothesis, or whether use of highly shared songs is associated with phenotype as predicted by the Conditional Sharing Hypothesis. Contrary to the Repertoire Size Hypothesis, most males did not sing all songs equally often. Contrary to the General Sharing Hypothesis, we found no general tendency to overproduce highly shared songs. The degree to which males overproduced highly shared songs was repeatable across days, indicating consistent individual differences, and varied across neighbourhoods. Moreover, and consistent with the Conditional Sharing Hypothesis, older males were more likely to overproduce highly shared songs. If highly shared song is a conventional signal of aggression, with the threat of receiver retaliation maintaining honesty, older males may be more willing or able to risk conflict. Alternatively, males may learn which songs are effective signals for an area. Finally, age-related variation in vocal performance may shape the adaptive value of highly shared song. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of spatially and temporally varying abiotic conditions on the nekton residing in tidally influenced streams and determine the comparability of the assemblage response across the various gears needed to fully characterize the biota. Three tidal streams were sampled seasonally for 2 years for chemical (physiochemical profiles), physical (in-stream and riparian habitat classification), and biological (nekton sampled with bag seines, trawls, and gill nets) components of ecosystem integrity. Multiple sampling stations on each stream encompassed the transitional character of the tidally influenced ecosystem, from the freshwater of the river to the saltwater of the bay. Instead of characterizing the biota with traditional fish-based indexes of biotic integrity, analysis methodologies relying heavily on multivariate ordination techniques were used. This study showed that the temporal and spatial relationships among nekton assemblages and abiotic environmental conditions were quite gear dependent. The greatest degree of difference in indicators of ecosystem health all involved upstream–downstream gradients that appear to be driven by salinity structure. Based on the results of this study, dissolved oxygen concentration does not appear to be a major structuring factor in the physical, chemical, or biological component of ecosystem integrity. 相似文献

Pesticide runoff research relies heavily on rainfall simulation experiments. Most are conducted at a constant intensity, i.e., at a fixed rainfall rate; however, large differences in natural rainfall intensity is common. To assess implications we quantified runoff of two herbicides, fluometuron and pendimethalin, and applied preemergence after planting cotton on Tifton loamy sand. Rainfall at constant and variable intensity patterns representative of late spring thunderstorms in the Atlantic Coastal Plain region of Georgia (USA) were simulated on 6-m2 plots under strip- (ST) and conventional-tillage (CT) management. The variable pattern produced significantly higher runoff rates of both compounds from CT but not ST plots. However, on an event-basis, runoff totals (% applied) were not significantly different, with one exception: fluometuron runoff from CT plots. There was about 25% more fluometuron runoff with the variable versus the constant intensity pattern (P = 0.10). Study results suggest that conduct of simulations using variable intensity storm patterns may provide more representative rainfall simulation-based estimates of pesticide runoff and that the greatest impacts will be observed with CT. The study also found significantly more fluometuron in runoff from ST than CT plots. Further work is needed to determine whether this behavior may be generalized to other active ingredients with similar properties [low K(oc) (organic carbon partition coefficient) approximately 100 mL g(-1); high water solubility approximately 100 mg L(-1)]. Abstract Certification testing of locomotive diesel engines is conducted by testing the locomotive in a series of steady-state conditions, or notches. The aim of this work was to determine whether notch changes, which are made on the order of twice per minute during normal locomotive operation, significantly affect emission rates. Particulate matter (PM) measurements recorded by others over 5, 15, and 30 min immediately at notch change were analyzed. By assuming that PM emissions during steady-state conditions were constant, it was possible to determine the amount of PM emitted because of notch change. Certification line-haul and switching duty cycles were modified to include a representative number of notch changes. The results of these calculations suggest that in test cycles in which a representative number of notch changes were included, ~40% of PM emissions occurred because of notch changes. 相似文献
