Synchrony in population fluctuations has been identified as an important component of population dynamics. In a previous study, we determined that local-scale (<15-km) spatial synchrony of bird populations in New England was correlated with synchronous fluctuations in lepidopteran larvae abundance and with the North Atlantic Oscillation. Here we address five questions that extend the scope of our earlier study using North American Breeding Bird Survey data. First, do bird populations in eastern North America exhibit spatial synchrony in abundances at scales beyond those we have documented previously? Second, does spatial synchrony depend on what population metric is analyzed (e.g., abundance, growth rate, or variability)? Third, is there geographic concordance in where species exhibit synchrony? Fourth, for those species that exhibit significant geographic concordance, are there landscape and habitat variables that contribute to the observed patterns? Fifth, is spatial synchrony affected by a species' life history traits? Significant spatial synchrony was common and its magnitude was dependent on the population metric analyzed. Twenty-four of 29 species examined exhibited significant synchrony in population abundance: mean local autocorrelation (rho)= 0.15; mean spatial extent (mean distance where rho=0) = 420.7 km. Five of the 29 species exhibited significant synchrony in annual population growth rate (mean local autocorrelation = 0.06, mean distance = 457.8 km). Ten of the 29 species exhibited significant synchrony in population abundance variability (mean local autocorrelation = 0.49, mean distance = 413.8 km). Analyses of landscape structure indicated that habitat variables were infrequent contributors to spatial synchrony. Likewise, we detected no effects of life history traits on synchrony in population abundance or growth rate. However, short-distance migrants exhibited more spatially extensive synchrony in population variability than either year-round residents or long-distance migrants. The dissimilarity of the spatial extent of synchrony across species suggests that most populations are not regulated at similar spatial scales. The spatial scale of the population synchrony patterns we describe is likely larger than the actual scale of population regulation, and in turn, the scale of population regulation is undoubtedly larger than the scale of individual ecological requirements.  相似文献

Ecological theory predicts that generalist predators should damp or suppress long-term periodic fluctuations (cycles) in their prey populations and depress their average densities. However, the magnitude of these impacts is likely to vary depending on the availability of alternative prey species and the nature of ecological mechanisms driving the prey cycles. These multispecies effects can be modeled explicitly if parameterized functions relating prey consumption to prey abundance, and realistic population dynamical models for the prey, are available. These requirements are met by the interaction between the Hen Harrier (Circus cyaneus) and three of its prey species in the United Kingdom, the Meadow Pipit (Anthus pratensis), the field vole (Microtus agrestis), and the Red Grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus). We used this system to investigate how the availability of alternative prey and the way in which prey dynamics are modeled might affect the behavior of simple trophic networks. We generated cycles in one of the prey species (Red Grouse) in three different ways: through (1) the interaction between grouse density and macroparasites, (2) the interaction between grouse density and male grouse aggressiveness, and (3) a generic, delayed density-dependent mechanism. Our results confirm that generalist predation can damp or suppress grouse cycles, but only when the densities of alternative prey are low. They also demonstrate that diametrically opposite indirect effects between pairs of prey species can occur together in simple systems. In this case, pipits and grouse are apparent competitors, whereas voles and grouse are apparent facilitators. Finally, we found that the quantitative impacts of the predator on prey density differed among the three models of prey dynamics, and these differences were robust to uncertainty in parameter estimation and environmental stochasticity.  相似文献

Accelerated streambank erosion caused by channel instability can be the leading cause of sediment impairment of streams. Obtaining accurate streambank erosion rates for sediment budgeting and prioritizing mitigation efforts can be difficult and costly. One approach to quantifying streambank erosion rates is through the development and implementation of an empirically derived “Bank Assessment for Non‐point Source Consequences of Sediment” (BANCS) model. This study aims to improve the BANCS model application by evaluating repeatability between users and identifying sensitive and/or uncertain model inputs. Statistical analysis of streambank evaluations conducted by 10 different individuals suggests the implementation of the BANCS model may not be repeatable. This finding may be due to sensitive model inputs, such as streambank height and near‐bank stress level prediction method selection, and/or uncertain model inputs, such as bank material identification and the associated adjustment of erosion potential. Furthermore, it was found assessing streambanks as a group by obtaining a measure of central tendency from individual evaluations, as well as obtaining a higher level of training, may improve model implementation precision. Application of these suggestions may result in improved prediction of streambank erosion rates utilizing the BANCS model methodology.  相似文献

This paper provides a methodology for generating forest management plans, which explicitly maximize carbon (C) sequestration at the forest-landscape level. This paper takes advantage of concepts first presented in a paper by Meng et al. (2003; Mitigation Adaptation Strategies Global Change 8:371–403) by integrating C-sequestration objective functions in existing wood supply models. Carbon-stock calculations performed in WoodstockTM (RemSoft Inc.) are based on C yields generated from volume table data obtained from local Forest Development Survey plots and a series of wood volume-to-C content conversion factors specified in von Mirbach (2000). The approach is used to investigate the impact of three demonstration forest-management scenarios on the C budget in a 110,000 ha forest in south-central New Brunswick, Canada. Explicit demonstration scenarios addressed include (1) maximizing timber extraction either by clearcut or selection harvesting for greatest revenue generation, (2) maximizing total C storage in the forest landscape and in wood products generated from harvesting, and (3) maximizing C storage together with revenue generation. The level of clearcut harvesting was greatest for scenario 1 (≥15 × 104 m3 of wood and ≥943 ha of land per harvesting period), and least for scenario 2 (=0 m3 per harvesting period) where selection harvesting dominated. Because softwood saw logs were worth more than pulpwood ($60 m−3 vs. $40 m−3) and were strategic to the long-term storage of C, the production of softwood saw logs exceeded the production of pulpwood in all scenarios. Selection harvesting was generally the preferred harvesting method across scenarios. Only in scenario 1 did levels of clearcut harvesting occasionally exceed those of selection harvesting, mainly in the removal of old, dilapidated stands early in the simulation (i.e., during periods 1 through 3). Scenario 2 provided the greatest total C-storage increase over 80 years (i.e., 14 × 106 Mg C, or roughly 264 Mg ha−1) at a cost of $111 per Mg C due to lost revenues. Scenarios 3 and 1 produced reduced storage rates of roughly 9 × 106 Mg C and 3 × 106 Mg C, respectively; about 64% and 22% of the total, 80-year C storage calculated in scenario 2. The bulk of the C in scenario 2 was stored in the forest, amounting to about 76% of the total C sequestered.  相似文献

The brittle star Ophionereis schayeri has abbreviated non-feeding development through a reduced ophiopluteus and a vitellaria larva. The metamorphic changes involved with development from a bilateral larva to a radial juvenile were examined in detail. The reduced ophiopluteus has a continuous ciliated band that breaks up into discontinuous ciliary ridges at the vitellaria stage. As the vitellaria develops, the juvenile rudiment forms in the mid-ventral region. The rudiment then undergoes a morphogenetic movement to the left of the larval anterior/posterior axis. This results in a dramatic transformation from bilateral to radial symmetry and is accompanied by development of juvenile structures and settlement, 6–7 days after fertilisation. Ophiuroid development through one larval stage, the ophiopluteus, is termed Type I; whereas development through two larval stages, the ophiopluteus and vitellaria, is termed Type II. We examined the evolutionary changes in the expression of Type II development in Ophionereis by comparing the ontogeny of six species with a range of larval forms. O. fasciata has the ancestral-like planktotrophic ophiopluteus. Vestigial pluteal structures in the larvae of O. schayeri, provide a link between ophiopluteal and vitellarial forms during evolution of non-feeding development. The diversity of larval forms in Ophionereis indicates that evolution of non-feeding development through a vitellaria (Type II) may have involved an increase in egg size, reduction of pluteal structures and shortening of the time to metamorphosis. Assessment of the phylogenetic significance of Types I and II development awaits additional comparative data on the metamorphic stages of other ophiuroid genera.Communicated by G.F. Three asterinid seastars, Patiriella gunnii (Gray), P. calcar (Lamarck) and P. exigua (Lamarck) are sympatric in southeast Australia and form part of a series of Patiriella species endemic to Australian shores. Reproduction of co-occurring populations of P. gunnii, P. calcar and P. exigua was investigated in New South Wales from December 1988 to February 1991. Their reproductive cycles were documented by the gonad index (GI) method and by histological examination of the gonads. The annual cycle of the pyloric caecae was also documented and the relationship between the two indices was examined. Oogenesis and spermatogenesis are described in histological detail. The three species produce large yolky eggs and have direct development. Vitellogenesis and weight-gain by the ovaries results from accumulation of periodic acid Schiff (PAS +) material by the oocytes. P. gunnii and P. calcar are gonochoric and have well-defined reproductive cycles, spawning in spring and summer. There was a sharp decline in the GI of P. gunnii in December due to potentially synchronous spawning. Histological examination revealed that initiation of gamete release occurred in August. Gamete release by P. calcar also started in August, with episodic spawning through December. P. gunnii and P. calcar have coincident 3 to 4 mo breeding seasons. In general, P. exigua is protandrous with a broad size range over which sex change occurs. Some P. exigua, however are simultaneous hermaphrodites at the outset of gonad formation and become increasingly female with growth. This species has continuous gametogenesis and oviposits its eggs on the undersides of intertidal boulders, with enhanced oviposition during winter and spring. Newly metamorphosed P. exigua occupy intertidal microhabitats and were located in the field from August to October. It is suggested that increasing sea temperature during spring may serve to cue gamete release by P. gunnii and P. calcar and that enhanced oviposition of P. exigua in winter may be in response to conditions optimal for development of the egg masses at this time. The GI of male and female P. gunnii and P. calcar did not differ, while male P. exigua had a significantly lower GI than the females. Small males are characteristic of this latter species, and it is suggested that the decreased male investment in P. exigua is associated with its non-planktonic development. The gonad and pyloric caeca (PCI) indices of P. gunnii exhibited a reciprocal relationship, indicating that the transfer of nutrients from the caeca to the gonads supports gametogenesis. These indices were partly reciprocal in P. calcar. It is suggested that gonadal growth in P. calcar may be less dependent on caecal reserves than that in P. gunnii. The PCI of P. exigua maintained a similar level throughout the year and was higher than the GI. Although the Patiriella species have coincident breeding periods, temporal differences in the intensity of spawning appears to reproductively isolate them in the field.  相似文献

The northern Pacific asteroid Asterias amurensis (Lütken) has been recently introduced to Tasmania and is now well-established in east and southeast Tasmania. This sea star is conspicuous throughout the Derwent River estuary and is particularly abundant in the Hobart port area. Reproduction of two populations of A. amurensis at Sullivans Cove and at Sandy Bay was investigated from August 1993 to October 1994 by gonadal histology and measurement of the gonad index (GI). An intense period of vitellogenic and spermatogenic growth started in April, with the breeding condition reached by June. In 1994, peak GI was recorded at Sullivans Cove in July and at Sandy Bay in August. Although these data indicated that the Sullivans Cove population spawned before the Sandy Bay population, histological examination revealed that major spawning activity occurred in both populations from July onwards. In the early part of the breeding season, gametogenesis proceeded in parallel with spawning, with released gametes being replaced by continual gametogenesis. Maintenance of a higher GI during the early part of the breeding season at Sandy Bay was due to prolonged gametogenic replacement at this site. Spawning continued to October 1994, resulting in a sharp decline in the GI. The cyclic expansion and regression of the genital haemal sinus coincident with germinal proliferation and growth, respectively, support the contention that haemal fluid provides nutrients for gametogenesis. In Tasmania, A. amurensis experiences temperature and photoperiod regimes similar to those experienced by endemic populations of this species in the north Pacific. Comparison of reproduction of A. amurensis in Japan and Tasmania at similar latitudes shows that gametogenesis of the northern and southern populations is 6 mo out of phase. This phase shift provides evidence for photoperiodic regulation of gametogenesis in A. amurensis. The similar trend in sea-temperature regimes associated with the stages of gametogenesis in northern and southern populations suggests that temperature also plays a modulatory role. Based on the periodicity of reproduction and the ontogeny of A. amurensis, the planktotrophic larvae of this species would be expected to be in the plankton for several months from the end of winter through summer. Considering the highly fecund, dispersive life-history of A. amurensis, the southeast Tasmanian populations have considerable potential to serve as a seed source for establishment of new populations of this asteroid elsewhere in Tasmania and in mainland Australia. The study of gold sites in the Migori Gold Belt, Kenya, revealed that the concentrations of heavy metals, mainly Hg, Pb and As are above acceptable levels. Tailings at the panning sites recorded values of 6.5–510 mg kg–1 Pb, 0.06–76.0 mg kg–1 As and 0.46–1920 mg kg–1 Hg. Stream sediments had values of 3.0–11075 mg kg–1 Pb, 0.014–1.87 mg kg–1 As and 0.28–348 mg kg–1 Hg. The highest metal contamination was recorded in sediments from the Macalder stream (11075 mg kg–1 Pb), Nairobi mine tailings (76.0 mg kg–1 As) and Mickey tailings (1920 mg kg–1 Hg). Mercury has a long residence time in the environment and this makes its emissions from artisan mining a threat to health. Inhaling large amounts of siliceous dust, careless handling of mercury during gold panning and Au/Hg amalgam processing, existence of water logged pits and trenches; and large number of miners sharing poor quality air in the mines are the major causes of health hazards among miners. The amount of mercury used by miners for gold amalgamation during peak mining periods varies from 150 to 200 kg per month. Out of this, about 40% are lost during panning and 60% lost during heating Au/Hg amalgam. The use of pressure burners to weaken the reef is a deadly mining procedure as hot particles of Pb, As and other sulphide minerals burn the body. Burns become septic. This, apparently, leads to death within 2–3 years. On-site training of miners on safe mining practices met with enthusiasm and acceptance. The use of dust masks, air filters and heavy chemical gloves during mining and mineral processing were readily accepted. Miners were thus advised to purchase such protective gear, and to continue using them for the sake of their health. The miners' workshop, which was held at the end of the project is likely to bear fruit. The Migori District Commissioner and other Government officials, including medical officers attended this workshop. As a result of this, the Government is seriously considering setting up a clinic at Masara, which is one of the mining centres in the district. This would improve the health of the mining community.  相似文献

Declines in many native fish populations have led to reassessments of management goals and shifted priorities from consumptive uses to species preservation. As management has shifted, relevant environmental characteristics have evolved from traditional metrics that described local habitat quality to characterizations of habitat size and connectivity. Despite the implications this shift has for how habitats may be prioritized for conservation, it has been rare to assess the relative importance of these habitat components. We used an information-theoretic approach to select the best models from sets of logistic regressions that linked habitat quality, size, and connectivity to the occurrence of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) nests. Spawning distributions were censused annually from 1995 to 2004, and data were complemented with field measurements that described habitat quality in 43 suitable spawning patches across a stream network that drained 1150 km2 in central Idaho. Results indicated that the most plausible models were dominated by measures of habitat size and connectivity, whereas habitat quality was of minor importance. Connectivity was the strongest predictor of nest occurrence, but connectivity interacted with habitat size, which became relatively more important when populations were reduced. Comparison of observed nest distributions to null model predictions confirmed that the habitat size association was driven by a biological mechanism when populations were small, but this association may have been an area-related sampling artifact at higher abundances. The implications for habitat management are that the size and connectivity of existing habitat networks should be maintained whenever possible. In situations where habitat restoration is occurring, expansion of existing areas or creation of new habitats in key areas that increase connectivity may be beneficial. Information about habitat size and connectivity also could be used to strategically prioritize areas for improvement of local habitat quality, with areas not meeting minimum thresholds being deemed inappropriate for pursuit of restoration activities.  相似文献
