Thyroid hormone levels sufficient for brain development and normal metabolism require a minimal supply of iodine, mainly dietary.
Living near the sea may confer advantages for iodine intake. Iodine (I2) gas released from seaweeds may, through respiration, supply a significant fraction of daily iodine requirements. Gaseous
iodine released over seaweed beds was measured by a new gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS)-based method and iodine
intake assessed by measuring urinary iodine (UI) excretion. Urine samples were obtained from female schoolchildren living
in coastal seaweed rich and low seaweed abundance and inland areas of Ireland. Median I2 ranged 154–905 pg/L (daytime downwind), with higher values (~1,287 pg/L) on still nights, 1,145–3,132 pg/L (over seaweed).
A rough estimate of daily gaseous iodine intake in coastal areas, based upon an arbitrary respiration of 10,000L, ranged from
1 to 20 μg/day. Despite this relatively low potential I2 intake, UI in populations living near a seaweed hotspot were much higher than in lower abundance seaweed coastal or inland
areas (158, 71 and 58 μg/L, respectively). Higher values >150 μg/L were observed in 45.6% of (seaweed rich), 3.6% (lower seaweed),
2.3% (inland)) supporting the hypothesis that iodine intake in coastal regions may be dependent on seaweed abundance rather
than proximity to the sea. The findings do not exclude the possibility of a significant role for iodine inhalation in influencing
iodine status. Despite lacking iodized salt, coastal communities in seaweed-rich areas can maintain an adequate iodine supply.

An investigation of high volume particle sampling and sample handling procedures was undertaken to evaluate variations of protocols being used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These protocols are used in urban ambient air studies which collect ambient and source samples for subsequent mutagenicity analysis of the organic extracts of the aerosol fraction. Specific protocol issues investigated include: (a) duration of sampling period, (b) type of filter media used to collect air particles, (c) necessity for cryogenic field site storage and dry ice shipping of filter samples, and (d) sample handling at the receiving laboratory. Six PM10 Hi-Vol samplers were collocated at an urban site in downtown Durham, North Carolina and operated simultaneously to evaluate 12 h versus 24 h collection periods and filter media choices of glass fiber, Teflon impregnated glass fiber (TIGF), and quartz fiber. Filters from the samplers plus field blanks were collected during each of 25 sampling periods. TIGF filters from two samplers were immediately placed on dry ice in the field and transported directly to cryogenic storage. TIGF, quartz, and glass fiber filters from three samplers were transported at ambient and maintained at room temperature for three to six days prior to cryogenic storage. One TIGF sample, which was collected on a previously tared filter, was subjected to controlled environment equilibration (40 percent relative humidity, 22 degrees C) for 8 to 24 h and weighed prior to cryogenic storage. The integration of the informal sector into municipal solid waste management is a challenge many developing countries face. In Iloilo City, Philippines around 220 tons of municipal solid waste are collected every day and disposed at a 10 ha large dumpsite. In order to improve the local waste management system the Local Government decided to develop a new Waste Management Center with integrated landfill. However, the proposed area is adjacent to the presently used dumpsite where more than 300 waste pickers dwell and depend on waste picking as their source of livelihood. The Local Government recognized the hidden threat imposed by the waste picker’s presence for this development project and proposed various measures to integrate the informal sector into the municipal solid waste management (MSWM) program. As a key intervention a Waste Workers Association, called USWAG Calahunan Livelihood Association Inc. (UCLA) was initiated and registered as a formal business enterprise in May 2009. Up to date, UCLA counts 240 members who commit to follow certain rules and to work within a team that jointly recovers wasted materials. As a cooperative they are empowered to explore new livelihood options such as the recovery of Alternative Fuels for commercial (cement industry) and household use, production of compost and making of handicrafts out of used packages. These activities do not only provide alternative livelihood for them but also lessen the generation of leachate and Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions from waste disposal, whereby the life time of the proposed new sanitary landfill can be extended likewise. 相似文献

This paper analyzes local stakeholders’ perception of the effects of, and vulnerability to, climate change in the case of the Ebro delta (NW Mediterranean Sea). The specific survey carried out amongst relevant local stakeholders showed a high level of concern about the current and future effects of climate change on the physical and socio-economic structures of the Ebro delta. The results of the survey also showed that there is a general agreement on the lack of social and political awareness of the problems that climate change can create in the delta in the near future, as well as a lack of adaptation strategies (only suggested or already being implemented). Finally, the conclusions of the study mainly rely on the different adaptation strategies proposed by previous studies. If any of these strategies is to be developed, there is a clear need for a firm will - from the local, regional and national political authorities and stakeholders - that should allow the development of a new manner of governance that until now it has not been possible to develop in the Ebro delta. 相似文献

Short-term effects of sucralose on Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus glacialis in Disko Bay,Greenland
The potential effects of sucralose on the Arctic copepods Calanus finmarchicus and Calanus glacialis were studied in Disko Bay, Greenland. Sucralose is a non-calorie sweetener and chlorine derivate of sucrose containing three chlorine atoms. Scandinavian screening studies of sucralose in 2007, revealed sucralose in all effluent samples. To investigate whether sucralose is harmful to the Arctic aquatic ecosystems, possible short-term effects were investigated on egg production, hatching rate, food intake and mortality of two species of Arctic copepods. The copepods were exposed to six different concentrations (0–50,000 ng · L?1) of sucralose, which spans the range of concentrations found in the screening studies. Exposure led to no mortality among the copepods. Food intake by C. glacialis increased with increasing concentrations of sucralose. In C. finmarchicus, food intake did not differ with increasing concentrations. No effect of sucralose was observed on egg production of C. finmarchicus. Despite increased food intake with increasing concentrations of sucralose, C. glacialis did not increase its egg production. The results show that both species responded weakly to sucralose, but with C. glacialis being possibly slightly more sensitive to sucralose than C. finmarchicus. 相似文献

Social amoebae aggregate to form a multicellular slug that migrates some distance. Most species produce a stalk during migration, but some do not. We show that Dictyostelium giganteum, a species that produces stalk during migration, is able to traverse small gaps and utilize bacterial resources following gap traversal by shedding live cells. In contrast, we found that Dictyostelium discoideum, a species that does not produce stalk during migration, can traverse gaps only when in the presence of other species’ stalks or other thin filaments. These findings suggest that production of stalk during migration allows traversal of gaps that commonly occurs in soil and leaf litter. Considering the functional consequences of a stalked migration may be important for explaining the evolutionary maintenance or loss of a stalked migration. 相似文献

As central-place foragers, pelagic seabirds are constrained by spatiotemporal heterogeneity to find productive marine areas and compete for prey. We analysed 97 foraging trips to study the movement and oceanographic characteristics of foraging habitats of two different—yet closely related—species of shearwaters (Scopoli’s shearwater Calonectris diomedea and Cory’s shearwater C. borealis) breeding in sympatry in the Mediterranean. We combined various methodological approaches (GPS-tracking, species distribution modelling and stable isotope analysis) to explore the foraging strategies of these two species. Isotopic results suggested that trophic habits of both shearwater species were similar, mainly based on pelagic fish consumption. Foraging areas of both species were characterized by shallow waters near the colony. Both shearwater species exploited persistent productive marine areas. The foraging areas of the two species broadly overlapped during the incubation period, but during chick-rearing period, Scopoli’s shearwaters apparently foraged in different areas than Cory’s shearwaters. 相似文献

Use of sewage sludge from wastewater treatment plants as a raw material for making clay bricks has been analyzed to be an option to dumping sludges into landfills. This alternative has been shown feasible and interesting due to the high rate of use of ceramic materials in the building sector. However, it meets with some environmental issues and some prejudices on the part of users. This work shows some leachability and toxicity tests (outgassing and offgassing) which demonstrate the environmental compatibility of these ceramic products to be used as building materials and even in deconstruction of the building once its useful life is ended. 相似文献
