Summary We tested the role of a grasshopper defensive secretion in deterring lizard predation. Adults, but not young larvae, of the chemically defended lubber grasshopperRomalea guttata (=microptera) froth a volatile secretion when attacked by predators. The lizardAnolis carolinensis failed to strike juvenile lubbers (which lack secretion) in laboratory trials. Survivorship of palatable crickets loaded with secretion offered toA. carolinensis was not significantly different from survivorship of control crickets. In experiments designed to investigate if lizards learn an aversion to the secretion, striking times forSceloporus undulatus fed wax worms coated with secretion were not significantly different over three days of trials. Three primary conclusions are drawn from these data. First, the secretion may not be necessary for lubber protection from lizards. Second, lubber secretion does not appear to deter lizards from attacking or eating prey items. Third, lizards do not appear to develop an aversion to the secretion.  相似文献

Summary Frogs(Rana pipiens) fed on blister beetles (Meloidae) or cantharidin, retain cantharidin systemically. After cessation of feeding, they void the compound relatively quickly. Systemic cantharidin does not protect frogs against ectoparasitic feeding by leeches(Hirudo medicinalis) or predation by snakes(Nerodia sipedon). As suggested by our data, and from reports in the early literature, ingestion of cantharidin-containing frogs can pose a health threat to humans.Paper no. 95 of the seriesDefense Mechanisms of Arthropods; no. 94 is LaMunyon & Eisner, Psyche (in press)  相似文献

Although estrous synchrony has been reported in a number of mammalian species, most often among primates, methodological and analytical problems make it difficult to interpret these results. We developed a novel estrous synchrony index and employed a randomization procedure to analyze long-term observations of female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) estrous cycles at the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania. Our results revealed that female chimpanzees at Mahale avoid synchronizing their estrous periods with each other. We also found that birthrates decreased as the breeding sex ratio increased. We suggest that estrous asynchrony decreases female–female competition for mates. Asynchrony may also reduce the potential for male sexual coercion by nonpreferred mating partners.  相似文献

Summary We studied oviposition, feeding and mating behavior of the water striders Limnoporus dissortis and L. notabilis in sympatric and allopatric populations occurring on semi-permanent ponds in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. Here we describe the mating system of the species and consider the evolution and maintenance of reproductive strategies employed by both sexes. Females of both species oviposited along edges of floating vegetation, either with a guarding, postcopulatory male in attendance, or alone and independent of copulation. Some females ovipositing alone were discovered by males, and when pressed for copulation, either (1) abandoned oviposition or (2) copulated and then resumed oviposition. Females that oviposited with a guarding male laid more eggs than those that completed oviposition alone. Most breeding females accepted prey offered experimentally, while a large proportion of males rejected prey but responded to model gerrids with aggressive displays and mating behavior. Males displayed three mating tactics: (1) territorial-signaling (TS), (2) patrol-signaling (PS), and (3) silent patrolling (SP). All territorial males produced surface waves from oviposition sites before attempting to mate. Some patrolling males signaled, while approaching potential mates as an aid in sex discrimination, but others did not signal and mounted both males and females. When presented with dead gerrid models, males of L. notabilis discriminated between sexes while those of L. dissortis mounted both male and female conspecifics. Collectively, males employing TS tactics fertilized more eggs than patrolling males and TS males of L. notabilis fertilized relatively more eggs than those of L. dissortis. Individual males switched frequently between territorial and patrolling behavior both under natural conditions and in field exclosures. TS males gave more signals per encounter than PS males suggesting that signaling varies with male dominance. Choice of tactic did not depend upon hunger level and was not associated with significant differences in body length in single-species populations. However, in a mixed population, the smaller males of L. dissortis were rarely territorial and signaled infrequently.  相似文献

Although the timing remains uncertain, the production of synthetic crude from oil shale seems to be a likely response to diminishing petroleum reserves. Although not unique to shale oil, the presence of arsenic, ranging in concentration from a few to over 100 parts per million, poses a special concern.Arsenic is typically removed from the shale oil by a hydro-processing technique and is concentrated on a catalyst as thermally stable metal arsenides and metal arsenous sulfides. Because this arsenic is still slightly soluble in water, making the spent catalyst a hazardous material, passivation and extraction techniques were investigated to make the catalyst safe for disposal. Passivation techniques were not successful. While extraction procedures were capable of removing over 75% of the arsenic, treated material may still be acceptable.  相似文献

Summary It has been proposed that both acoustic and non-acoustic factors could explain the dawn peak of territorial advertisement in birds. The coot is a territorial waterbird which does not use vocal advertisement either to attract mates or defend territory boundaries. In spite of the absence of acoustic factors affecting the time budgeting of advertisement, this species shows a dawn peak of display and aggressive behaviours. This trend occurs both in the presence and absence of non-territorial prospecting birds, but the trends are quantitatively different in these two cases (Fig. 1). Males participate in display and fighting more often than females, probably because of their greater size and effectiveness in defence. This asymmetry in defence abilities governs the time budgeting of incubation, the male tending to take time off the nest when territorial defence is most necessary (Fig. 2).  相似文献

Summary Colonies of Neivamyrmex nigrescens conduct extensive nocturnal raids on other ants and termites in the desert-grassland of Arizona-New Mexico. We collected quantitative data on several aspects of raiding to pinpoint differences due to colony size and behavioral phase. In the nomadic phase, colonies began raiding at sunset and continued until dawn. Larger colonies covered more area, discovered more prey sites, and collected more booty than smaller colonies, but there were no systematic changes in raid intensity over the course of the nomadic phase. In the statary phase, raiding occurred less frequently and was less intense when it occurred; however, at the end of this phase, raiding was similar to nomadic phase raids in extent, duration, and booty captured. N. nigrescens preyed exclusively on termites and ants, and appeared to select certain species of Pheidole in preference to other ants. Pheidole was the most abundant genus, but was preyed upon twice as often as expected based on relative colony density. Pheidole attempted to avoid predation by fleeing or defending their nest, but rarely succeeded. Because they are about the same size as army ants and lack defensive chemicals, Pheidole made comparatively easy prey. N. nigrescens ignored or was repelled by other ants (Pogonomyrmex, Novomessor, Iridomyrmex, Myrmecocystus) during the early summer, when Pheidole was abundant; however, in late summer when Pheidole was less available, the army ants preyed upon Novomessor cockerelli. N. harrisi raided in close proximity to N. nigrescens, but preyed exclusively on Solenopsis xyloni. Selection of prey and partitioning of resources are now indicated in several army ant species; these processes have probably been important factors in the evolution of the ants' predatory behavior.  相似文献

Aposematic species advertise their unpalatability to potential predators using conspicuous warning colouration. The initial evolution of aposematism is thought to occur by warningly coloured mutants emerging in an already unpalatable cryptic species. However, possessing defence chemicals is often costly, and it is difficult to understand what the selective benefits might be for a mutation causing its bearer to be defended in a population of otherwise palatable cryptic prey. One solution to this problem is that chemically defended individuals are tasted and rejected by predators, and are, therefore, more likely to survive predatory attacks than undefended individuals. Using naïve domestic chicks Gallus gallus domesticus as predators and cryptic green chick crumbs as prey, we asked whether the accuracy with which birds discriminated between palatable and unpalatable prey was affected by the palatability of the unpalatable prey (moderately or highly defended), or their frequency in the population (10 or 25%). Birds could discriminate between green prey on the basis of their defences, and showed better discrimination between palatable and unpalatable prey when defended crumbs were highly unpalatable, compared to when they were moderately unpalatable. Although there was no detectable effect of the frequency of unpalatable prey in the population on predator taste-rejection behaviour in our main analysis, frequency did appear to affect the strategies that birds used in their foraging decisions when prey were only moderately unpalatable. How birds used taste to reject prey also suggests that birds may be able to monitor and regulate their chemical intake according to the frequency and defence levels of the unpalatable prey. Taken together, these results show that avian predators can generate selection for unpalatability in cryptic prey by sampling and taste-rejecting prey, but that a relatively large chemical difference between palatable and unpalatable prey may be necessary before unpalatable prey can enjoy a selective advantage. The exact nature of this evolutionary dynamic will depend on other environmental factors, such as defence costs and prey availability, but it provides a mechanism by which defences can evolve in a cryptic population.  相似文献

The benefit of group living is a fundamental question in social evolution. For sociality to evolve, each individual must gain in terms of some fitness component by living in larger groups. However, in social insects, a decrease in per capita success in brood production has been observed in larger groups. While it has been proposed that this decrease could be outweighed by an increase in the predictability of success, a functional basis to this hypothesis has so far never been demonstrated. In this paper, using foraging economics as a functional proxy to colony productivity, we construct a model to explore how number of foragers in the colony interacts with the ecology of resources to influence per capita foraging success and its predictability. The results of the model show that there is no increase in per capita foraging success in larger colonies under most circumstances, though there is an increase in its predictability. We then test the model with empirical data on the foraging behavior of the primitively eusocial wasp, Ropalidia marginata. The consistency between the data and the model suggests that foraging economics could provide a robust functional basis in explaining the relationship between colony size and productivity.  相似文献
