Samples of juveniles and adults of the goby Pseudogobius olorum were collected from seven sites in the shallows of the upper Swan Estuary, Western Australia, using a 3 mm-mesh seine net on one or two occasions in each month between September 1983 and April 1985. The mean gonadosomatic index of female fish rose from very low values in winter (June–August) to a sharp peak in mid-spring (October), reflecting the rapid maturation of ovaries over, this period. Ovaries with post-ovulatory follicles and ovaries that were undergoing degeneration were present, in November and December, but were then either rare or absent in those members of the corresponding cohort which survived into January and February. Female fish with advanced oocytes and mature ovaries were not found in December and January, but were present in February to April. The above trends exhibited by ovarian maturity indices, together with the appearance of larvae and small fish in both spring and autumn, demonstrate that P. olorum spawns in both spring and autumn and at best to only a limited extent in summer. Length-frequency and gonadal data show that the progeny of the spring-spawning group frequently spawn in the following autumn, when they are 5 mo old, and that those of the autumn-spawning group frequently spawn in the following spring, when they are 7 mo old. Some representatives of these two spawning groups survive through the winter and summer, respectively, to breed in a second season. Growth of the progeny of the spring-spawning group was relatively rapid between late spring and mid-autumn, whereas that of the autumn-spawning group was negligible during winter, but then inceased markedly in spring. It is proposed that the biannual spawning periods in each year by P. olorum in the Swan Estuary developed as a result of a rise in water temperature over the last few thousand years. Such a rise would have brought forward further into spring and extended later into autumn the periods when the water temperatures lie within the range (20 to 25°C) at which P. olorum typically spawns. However, mid-summer is now characterised by water temperatures >25°C, which are considered less conducive to reproductive success.  相似文献

Congenital bronchopulmonary malformations detectable on prenatal ultrasound include cystic adenomatoid malformation (CAM), lobar sequestration, and upper airway atresia. We describe three fetuses with prenatally detected intrathoracic lesions in which the associated pulmonary hyperechogenicity disappeared before delivery. In the first case of pulmonary sequestration, the infant was asymptomatic after birth. However, in a case of CAM and another with laryngeal atresia, respiratory distress developed after delivery, despite recent scans showing apparently normal lung fields. This experience suggests that ultrasonic resolution of hyperechogenic lung lesions in utero does not necessarily indicate resolution of the underlying pathology.  相似文献

In species with more than one male reproductive morph, there typically exists a larger morph with exaggerated secondary sexual characters, and a smaller morph with reduced secondary sexual characters. These exaggerated and reduced morphologies are commonly thought to represent specializations to alternative behavioral reproductive tactics—large body size and exaggerated secondary sexual characters should both facilitate territoriality, courtship, and pair-spawning; while small body size and reduced secondary sexual characters should facilitate sneaky cuckoldry. Given this postulated relationship between morphology and behavior, we examined the relationship between the morphology of exaggerated males and cuckoldry. In a field and aquarium study of the midshipman fish, a fish with both exaggerated and reduced morphs, we demonstrated cuckoldry in some males of the exaggerated morph. Since the reduced morphology is thought to be an adaptation towards sneaky cuckoldry, we predicted that, of males with the exaggerated morph, less-exaggerated (smaller) males would be better able to gain proximity to the spawning pair during cuckoldry. In contrast to that prediction, access to the spawning pair during cuckoldry increased with the body size of the cuckolding exaggerated-morph males. This may be related to our observation that exaggerated males often cuckolded aggressively. Thus the exaggerated morphology need not preclude adaptive plasticity to cuckoldry, and may even aid it.  相似文献

During a follow-up study of 19 790 pregnancies at risk for a genetic disease, from 1968 to 1989, 1083 fetuses were found to have an anomaly during the second trimester, leading to 977 terminations of pregnancy. Neural tube defects (31.4 per cent), chromosomal disorders (27.1 per cent), and Mendelian or multifactorial diseases (10.6 per cent) were the main causes of fetal anomaly. More than half (52.9 per cent) of the fetal anomalies were detected by routine ultrasound examination. Forty-two per cent of cystic hygromas were secondary to a chromosomal defect. We stress the importance of a comprehensive fetal and newborn examination to ensure an accurate diagnosis so that subsequently accurate counselling can be provided.  相似文献

Currently, South Africa is designing a strategy for surface water protection involving organic contaminants such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), which is currently used for malaria control in mosquito-infested areas. Here, we demonstrate the successful use of an improved activated carbon technique using dichloromethane instead of chloroform, and slower leaching rate of 15 mL/min to quantify DDT and its metabolites in surface water. The recovery tests for 2,4′DDT, 2,4′DDD, 2,4′DDE, and 4,4′DDT, 4,4′DDD, 4,4′DDE ranged from 75 to 84% and 87 to 96%, respectively (DDE: dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, DDD: dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane). The main advantages of this technique over conventional liquid–liquid extractions are reduced amount of organic solvent, little sample preparation, and larger sample throughput. Because activated charcoal is fairly cheap, the technique can be routinely used to quantify and monitor DDT and its metabolites in surface water samples.  相似文献

The apparently maladaptive tendency of fish to approach and inspect potential predators has been explained in terms of useful information gathering or as a signal to the predator that it has been seen. We examined this behaviour in 16 populations of wild-caught stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from ponds with and without predatory perch (Perca fluviatilis). Three large and three small individuals per population were each exposed to three model predators differing in realism. A final cooperative treatment entailed pairing subjects with a second individual from the same population, but of the alternative size class, during predator presentation. As might be expected, predator inspection behaviour was much greater in the predator-sympatric populations, and only these fish increased their level of inspection as the models became incrementally more realistic. This suggests that reductions occur in the level of costly inspection behaviour in populations without predators. Subject body size had no effect on inspection effort, which suggests a limited role for experience (we assumed larger fish to be older than smaller fish), at least over the relative age differences utilized. However, small predator-sympatric fish were the only subjects to increase inspection significantly when in a cooperative context, perhaps reflecting the inherent value of a relatively larger partner in this context. These results confirm that levels of predator inspection are both population- and situation-dependent, suggesting a trade-off in the potential costs and benefits of this behaviour.Communicated by C. Models for pollutant runoff can be useful in water quality management planning if appropriately structured for the problem at hand. Accordingly, a “top-down” approach is proposed for the examination of extant pollutant runoff models. The approach consists of the identification of objectives and attributes that reflect the needs of planners and decision makers when these models are used for water quality management planning. Ideally, the attributes should concern the effect of model information on improved decision making and the cost of model application. Practical difficulties with the first attribute necessitates substitution of surrogate attributes reflecting model appropriateness, resolution, and uncertainty. Common pollutant runoff models, in particular export coefficients and hydrology-driven simulation models, are found to have serious weaknesses on some of the attribute scales. The “top-down” approach leads to a set of desirable pollutant runoff model attributes; alternate modeling techniques are thus examined in order to identify promising future directions for model development. The focus of this examination is phosphorus, due to its importance in the eutrophication of surface waters. Models for both sediment-attached and dissolved phosphorus are considered. Among the conclusions is the belief that the partial contributing area concept can yield an effective yet simple simulation despite the variable and complex nature of runoff.  相似文献
