Socioecological models relate differences in feeding strategies to variation in the nature of female social relationships. Among the African forest guenons, females consume large quantities of fruit and other plant reproductive parts, resources which are thought to promote contest competition, yet these monkeys have been characterized as having agonistically undifferentiated relationships in which rank, if discernible at all, does not correlate with fitness benefits. To determine whether female relationships become more hierarchical under relevant ecological conditions, we monitored the adult females of two blue monkey groups (Cercopithecus mitis stuhlmanni) over a complete annual cycle in the Kakamega Forest, Kenya. Females competed aggressively for plant reproductive parts more often than any other resource type, and in both groups we detected linear dominance hierarchies. Nonetheless, agonism rates remained low throughout our study, and did not vary with changes in ecological conditions. Rather, when plant reproductive parts were scarce, subordinate females spent more time feeding and less time resting in an apparent attempt to compensate for a reduced efficiency of food intake. The effects of rank and food abundance were not reflected, however, in the distribution of grooming. The use of alternative feeding strategies appeared to blunt competition – females of all ranks were unlikely to be near others while feeding and spent more time consuming alternative resources when plant reproductive parts were scarce. The diverse diet of this species may allow females to avoid conflict so that dominance has only subtle effects that are difficult to detect. While socioecological models often simplify the connection between resources and female interactions, our results emphasize that the behavior of animals consuming particular resources, and not the resources themselves, are critical predictors of social patterns. 相似文献

Previous studies of biparental care in birds have focused on the males contribution and experimental removal of males. Woodpeckers, with a high level of paternal care including nocturnal incubation and brooding by males, offer a meaningful system in which to examine the importance of care by females. I studied the reproductive performance of 17 widowed male and 8 widowed female northern flickers (Colaptes auratus) relative to biparental (control) pairs. Of these single parents all widowed shortly after hatching, only one female abandoned its nest. Single parents boosted their provisioning rates to achieve 83% the provisioning rate of control broods, but reared significantly fewer young and young of poorer quality. However, single males, with 85% of the reproductive success of controls, were more successful than females with 43% the success of controls. Among widowed birds, a not significant lower survival was observed, but the chance of re-pairing with the same partner in a subsequent year was only 16% in the natural population, so long-term costs of desertion may be small. Although females seem to have the incentive and ability to desert, a lack of available males may constrain opportunities. This study demonstrates that when parental care roles are reversed in altricial birds, asymmetric benefits can favor female and not male desertion. 相似文献

Although estuaries are critical habitats for many aquatic species, the spatial trends of toxic methylmercury(MeHg) in biota from fresh to marine waters are poorly understood. Our objective was to determine if MeHg concentrations in biota changed along a salinity gradient in an estuary. Fourspine Stickleback(Apeltes quadracus), invertebrates(snails,amphipods, and chironomids), sediments, and water were collected from ten sites along the Saint John River estuary, New Brunswick, Canada in 2015 and 2016, with salinities ranging from 0.06 to 6.96. Total mercury(proxy for MeHg) was measured in whole fish and MeHg was measured in a subset of fish, pooled invertebrates, sediments, and water. Stable sulfur(δ~(34)S), carbon(δ~(13) C), and nitrogen(δ~(15)N) isotope values were measured to assess energy sources(S, C) and relative trophic level(N). There were increases in biotic δ~(13)C and δ~(34)S from fresh to more saline sites and these measures were correlated with salinity.Though aqueous MeHg was higher at the freshwater than more saline sites, only chironomid MeHg increased significantly with salinity. In the Saint John River estuary, there was little evidence that MeHg and its associated risks increased along a salinity gradient. 相似文献

The development and regulatory acceptance of monitored natural attenuation (MNA) as a remedial strategy has forever changed the field of environmental cleanup. MNA is continuing to develop but it is challenged by a lack of a clear definition for the appropriate application of the MNA strategy. This challenge has resulted in the lack of a significant record of restoration and site closure. Environmental professionals face challenges in providing guidance that addresses how to manage these sites when technologies, performance monitoring, and even environmental conditions are subject to further development, refinement, and/or altered perspectives. As our experience and institutional knowledge grows around the implementation of MNA, we have the opportunity to develop “second‐generation” management tools and procedures for optimizing sites utilizing MNA as a part of a comprehensive site management plan. This opportunity is the focus of the Enhanced Attenuation: Chlorinated Organics (EACO) Team of the Interstate Technology Regulatory Council (ITRC). The development of the “second‐generation” tools/procedures has included defining EA and evaluating, through the use of a national survey of state regulators, the experience with MNA and interest in EA. There have been major shifts in attitudes of Congress, state legislatures and the general public toward water and related resource issues. Future water research and development will have to be environmentally oriented. Emphasis is shifting to research productivity. To justify research expenditures, hard facts must be produced which demonstrate payoff. Technology transfer (getting research results into the hands of users in an understandable and usable form) is gaining prominence. Research projects must be designed for total problem solution and technology transfer must be incorporated as a part of project objectives. Converting Toxic Equivalents (TEQ) of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in fish from one Toxic Equivalency Factor (TEF) scheme to another 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Toxic Equivalency Factors (TEFs) are an essential part of the Toxic Equivalent (TEQ) concept and have evolved for dioxins/dioxin-like compounds over the last two and half decades. Therefore, it is difficult to compare past and current TEQs that are reported using different TEFs without explicitly mentioning underlying congener concentrations. Using what likely is the largest known dioxin/furan (PCDD/F) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyl (dl-PCB or DLP) fish database, here we present regression models that can facilitate conversion of a fish TEQ from an old to a newer TEF scheme. The results show that the mammalian PCDD/F-TEQ based on the latest TEF(WHO-05) is about 7.5% lower than that based on TEF(WHO-98). The mammalian DLP-TEQ(WHO-05) is on average 25-26% lower than almost identical DLP-TEQ(WHO-94) and DLP-TEQ(WHO-98). Total-TEQ(WHO-05) is on average 22% lower than Total-TEQ(WHO-98). According to the current toxicological standards for dioxins/furans, all previous major TEF schemes except TEF(Germany-85) and TEF(USEPA-87) were conservative (i.e., higher) in estimating TEQs. The major (> 75%) contribution to PCDD/F-TEQ(WHO-05) is from 2,3,7,8-TCDD (33%), 1,2,3,7,8-PCDD (26%), 2,3,7,8-TCDF (10%), and 2,3,4,7,8-PCDF (9%). The DLP-TEQ(WHO-05) is dominated by PCB-126 which on average contributes about 88%. The DLP-TEQ generally contribute > 70% of Total-TEQ. When reporting TEQs, we recommend that the underlying congener specific concentrations are presented, TEF scheme used is clearly stated, names of compounds included are explicitly expressed, and TEQs are identified accordingly (e.g., DLP-TEQ, PCDD/F-TEQ, Total-TEQ). 相似文献

Reproductive success within populations often varies with the timing of breeding, typically declining over the season. This
variation is usually attributed to seasonal changes in resource availability and/or differences in the quality or experience
of breeders. In colonial species, the timing of breeding may be of particular importance because the costs and benefits of
colonial breeding are likely to vary over the season and also with colony size. In this study, we examine the relationship
between timing of breeding and reproductive performance (clutch size and nest success) both within and between variable sized
colonies (n = 18) of fairy martins, Petrochelidon ariel. In four of these colonies, we also experimentally delayed laying in selected nests to disentangle the effects of laying
date and individual quality/experience on reproductive success. Within colonies, later laying birds produced smaller clutches,
but only in larger colonies. The general seasonal decline in nest success was also more pronounced in larger colonies. Late
laying birds were generally smaller than earlier laying birds, but morphological differences were also related to colony size,
suggesting optimal colony size also varies with phenotype. Experimentally delayed clutches were larger than concurrently produced
non-delayed clutches, but only in larger colonies. Similarly, delayed clutches were more likely to produce fledglings, particularly
later in the season and in larger colonies. We suggest that the reduced performance of late breeding pairs in larger colonies
resulted primarily from inexperienced/low quality birds preferring to settle in larger colonies, possibly exacerbated by an
increase in the costs of coloniality (e.g., resource depletion and ectoparasite infestations) with date and colony size. These
findings highlight the importance of phenotype-related differences in settlement decisions and reproductive performance to
an improved understanding of colonial breeding and variation in colony size. 相似文献

Sediment deposition is known to affect the structure of marine rocky-bottom communities, but its specific effects on some
key organisms, such as sponges, remain poorly investigated. In a 125-day field experiment involving different treatments of
exposure to sediment deposition, we investigated survival of asexually produced recruits of the sublittoral demosponge Scopalina lophyropoda, a model organism suitable to understand similar processes in other sponges. A total of 660 explants obtained from 11 non-clonal
sponges (explant donors) were distributed on 30 experimental plates. Each donor sponge contributed two clonal explants per
plate, one settled under a roof at a silt-protected position and the other at a silt-exposed position. Plates were installed
at the rocky walls of the natural community, also at the pillars of a local harbor where the sponge does not occur naturally.
A 3-way ANOVA testing for differences in explant longevity as a function of explant donor, exposure to sediment, and habitat
detected that longevity was affected by both an undetermined genetic condition of the explant donor and exposure to silt.
Silt-protected explants lived longer than silt-exposed explants. A significant “Silt-exposure × Habitat” interaction detected
that silt-exposed explants lived shorter within the harbor than in the natural community, suggesting that harbor silt, which
was notably finer, is more deleterious. Inspection of daily mortality rates revealed that the detrimental effects of silt
were very evident during the first 20 days in treatments and irrespective of habitat. Then, mortality rates progressively
decreased, reaching negligible values in all 4 sponge groups by day 65. At this stage, an undetermined mortality factor other
than purely sediment deposition reactivated mortality in all 4 sponge groups, but it affected more intensely the sponges in
the harbor, irrespective of being protected from or exposed to sediment deposition. All together, the results of our field
experiment suggest that sediment loads are a major mortality factor among small sponge individuals in sublittoral rocky communities.
Because a significant “donor factor” suggests an unidentified “genetic component” to be involved in the ability to cope with
sediment, natural or man-driven processes increasing coastal sediment deposition are susceptible to induce changes not only
in the abundance but also the genetic structure of the sponge populations in the long term. 相似文献

Lactation is the most energy-intense period in the life of a female mammal. This can cause severe conflict between mother
and offspring over the duration of lactation but also between siblings over the amount of milk each pup gets from its mother.
Thus, competitive interactions between siblings are expected, and competition is likely to increase with litter size, particularly
in species where the number of offspring exceeds the number of teats. We studied sibling competition in the domestic guinea
pig (Cavia aperea f. porcellus), which has two teats, but frequently bears litters of up to five pups. By cross-fostering we created non-competition (control)
litters with two pups and competition litters with four pups and observed nursing behaviour on days 5, 10, 15 and 20 postpartum.
Pups of larger litters had lower growth rates, indicating increased competition among siblings in these litters. Pups of larger
litters had to wait longer for access to a teat and spent less time suckling than pups of smaller litters but ate more solid
food instead. Additionally, we manipulated the individual short-term need of pups by separating half of the pups of each litter
for 2 h from their mothers before observation. Within a litter, hungry pups achieved access to milk faster and spent more
time suckling than non-hungry pups. Pups competed mostly by scramble competition. Aggressive interactions occurred only in
large litters. Pups of large litters had higher cortisol levels than pups in small litters. These effects decreased with age
as pups became increasingly independent of maternal milk. Pup behaviour appears to fit better with models of scramble competition
than with those of honest signalling.

Identification of oyster species is still largely based on phenotypic characters that are highly plastic. Prompted by the
proposed introduction of the Asian oyster species Crassostrea ariakensis into the Chesapeake Bay region of the U.S.A., this study uses molecular genetic information to understand the taxonomic framework
surrounding C. ariakensis and to confidently distinguish among various sympatric oyster species. Putative samples of C. ariakensis and other species of cupped oysters from across Asia were collected and phylogenetic analyses were conducted on DNA sequences
of both nuclear (ITS-1) and mitochondrial (COI) regions. Trees generated based on the two independent molecular datasets were
highly congruent, and indicate that many oysters collected for this study as C. ariakensis were originally misidentified. Results also indicate that C. ariakensis, C. hongkongensis and C. nippona are distinct, but closely related species. There is strong support in both analyses for a close relationship between C. gigas and C. sikamea, as well as between C. belcheri and C. gryphoides, and between C. iredalei and C. madrasensis. The parsimony analyses based on these DNA markers, however, did not provide evidence to support C. angulata as a distinct species from C. gigas. Overall, the results emphasize the need for rigorous species identification, and additional extensive and intensive sampling
to more accurately determine relationships among Crassostrea species, define their geographic distributions, and establish existing sympatry patterns. 相似文献
