Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus distribution in particle size-fractionated separated pig and cattle slurry 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Solid liquid separation of animal slurry is a method to reduce the excess nutrient loads from intensive livestock production. Five different separation technologies (sedimentation, centrifugation, pressurized filtration, polymer flocculation and drainage, and iron chloride addition + polymer flocculation and drainage) were applied to pig and cattle slurry in a laboratory study. Separation efficiencies of mass, dry matter (DM), N, and P were measured. Particle size fractionation of the solid fractions was performed by subjecting them to wet fractionation and C, organic N (N(org)), and P contents were subsequently measured. Chemical pretreatment with polymer before gravity drainage separated DM, total N, and P from raw pig and cattle slurry with the highest efficiencies. Sedimentation and centrifugation separated P from pig and cattle slurries with higher simple separation efficiencies (0.77 and 0.70, respectively) compared with pressurized filtration (0.15 and 0.37). Pressurized filtration transferred the lowest masses (14 and 18%) to the solid fractions. Solid fractions from pig slurry generally contained higher concentrations of P and C compared with cattle slurry solid fractions. The majority of C in solid fractions was present in particles > 25 microm, whereas N and P were present in larger proportions in particles < 25 microm. Time series of abundance estimates are commonly used for analyses of population trends and possible shifts in growth rate.
We investigate if trends in age composition can be used as an alternative to abundance estimates for detection of decelerated
population growth. Both methods were tested under two forms of density dependence and different levels of environmental variation
in simulated time series of growth in Baltic gray seals. Under logistic growth, decelerating growth could be statistically
confirmed after 16 years based on population counts and 14 years based on age composition. When density dependence sets in
first at larger population sizes, the age composition method performed dramatically better than population counts, and a decline
could be detected after 4 years (versus 10 years). Consequently, age composition analysis provides a complementary method

Biogenic VOC emission estimates from the earth's surface are crucial input parameters in air quality models. Knowledge accumulated in the last years about BVOC source distributions and chemical compound species emission profiles in Europe as well as the demand of air quality modellers for a finer resolution in space and time of BVOC estimates have led to the set-up of new emission modelling systems. An updated fast BVOC emission modelling platform explicitly considering the seasonality of emission potentials and leaf temperature gradients in forest canopies by the semi-empirical emission module (seBVOC) will be proposed and used for estimating hourly values of chemical compound-specific emissions in Europe (33–68° north; 10° west to 40° east) in the years 1997, 2000, 2001, and 2003. Spatial resolution will be 10 km by 10 km. The database used contains latest land and forest distributions, updated foliar biomass densities, leaf area indices (LAI), and plant as well as chemical compound-specific emission potentials, if available. Meteorological input parameters for the respective years will be generated using the non-hydrostatic meteorological model MM5. Highest BVOC emissions occur in daytime hours around noon from the end of May to mid-August in the Mediterranean area and from the mid of June to the end of July in the boreal forests. Comparison of 3 BVOC model approaches will reveal that for July 2003, the European isoprene and monoterpene totals range from 1124 Gg to 1446 Gg and from 338 Gg to 1112 Gg, respectively. Small-scale deviations may be as high as ±0.6 Mg km?2 for July 2003, reflecting the current uncertainty range for BVOC estimates. Key sources of errors in inventories are still insufficiently detailed land use data for some areas and lacking chemically speciated plant-specific emission potentials in particular in boreal, south-eastern, and northern African landscapes. The quantification of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be a powerful sustainability measurement indicator for assessing environmental impacts of various operations, which can include remediation of chemically impacted media or construction projects. A carbon footprint calculator was developed and is presented in this article as one tool for applying sustainable practices to environmental remediation—specifically to assess the GHG footprint for remediation projects. The ability to resist infections can differ between individuals of different social rank. This study investigates if the clearance of an avian virus infection (Sindbis virus) was related to the social status of greenfinches (Carduelis chloris) and if infected birds would decline in social status. The results showed that virus clearance patterns were related to social status. Within groups of birds with similar plumage color (a social status signal), body mass and age, a birds social status could be used to predict virus clearance patterns. Dominant birds had higher virus concentrations early in the infection and lower virus titres during later stages of the infection as compared to birds that were subordinates. The infection had no significant effect on previously established social ranks, and ranks that were established during the infection did not appear to be influenced by a birds infection status. In conclusion, this study exemplifies a case where the social rank of an individual was a predictor of the ability to clear a viral infection. When determining whether or not remediation of subslab contamination is warranted, it is often important to know if the presence of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air is caused primarily by interior sources, or primarily by subslab contamination. With a Building Pressure Control test, the pressure differential across the building envelope and, thereby, also the pressure differential across the slab, can be controlled by a blower. By measuring the indoor air concentrations of VOCs under depressurization (upward pressure gradient over the slab) and under pressurization (downward pressure gradient over the slab), it can be determined if the subslab contamination contributes significantly to the VOC concentrations in indoor air. This technique has been applied at several sites in the Central Denmark Region, and the results show that a Building Pressure Control test is a quick and effective method to examine if VOC contamination in indoor air is caused primarily by interior sources or primarily by subslab sources. With numerous measurement points in the indoor air, at some sites this test method has identified the area where the subslab contamination is located. A pressure differential at ?5/+5 Pa across the building envelope was sufficient at all the test sites to control the pressure gradient across the slab to be uniquely upward/downward. 相似文献

AbstractObjective: The introduction of integrated safety technologies in new car models calls for an improved understanding of the human occupant response in precrash situations. The aim of this article is to extensively study occupant muscle activation in vehicle maneuvers potentially occurring in precrash situations with different seat belt configurations.Methods: Front seat male passengers wearing a 3-point seat belt with either standard or pre-pretensioning functionality were exposed to multiple autonomously carried out lane change and lane change with braking maneuvers while traveling at 73?km/h. This article focuses on muscle activation data (surface electromyography [EMG] normalized using maximum voluntary contraction [MVC] data) obtained from 38 muscles in the neck, upper extremities, the torso, and lower extremities. The raw EMG data were filtered, rectified, and smoothed. All muscle activations were presented in corridors of mean?±?one standard deviation. Separate Wilcoxon signed ranks tests were performed on volunteers’ muscle activation onset and amplitude considering 2 paired samples with the belt configuration as an independent factor.Results: In normal driving conditions prior to any of the evasive maneuvers, activity levels were low (<2% MVC) in all muscles except for the lumbar extensors (3–5.5% MVC). During the lane change maneuver, selective muscles were activated and these activations restricted the sideway motions due to inertial loading. Averaged muscle activity, predominantly in the neck, lumbar extensor, and abdominal muscles, increased up to 24% MVC soon after the vehicle accelerated in lateral direction for all volunteers. Differences in activation time and amplitude between muscles in the right and left sides of the body were observed relative to the vehicle’s lateral motion. For specific muscles, lane changes with the pre-pretensioner belt were associated with earlier muscle activation onsets and significantly smaller activation amplitudes than for the standard belt (P?<?.05).Conclusions: Applying a pre-pretensioner belt affected muscle activations; that is, amplitude and onset time. The present muscle activation data complement the results in a preceding publication, the volunteers’ kinematics and the boundary conditions from the same data set. An effect of belt configuration was also seen on previously published volunteers’ kinematics with lower lateral and forward displacements for head and upper torso using the pre-pretensioner belt versus the standard belt. The data provided in this article can be used for validation and further improvement of active human body models with active musculature in both sagittal and lateral loading scenarios intended for simulation of some evasive maneuvers that potentially occur prior to a crash. 相似文献

Changes in disturbance rates due to climate change may increase or decrease diversity, whereas permanent loss of habitat is generally believed to decrease diversity. It is, however, very likely that the effects of disturbances and habitat destruction interact. Understanding such combined effects is essential to predict the response of communities to global changes and in particular which functional types of species are most endangered. Using an individual-based spatially explicit community model, we investigate (1) whether diversity-disturbance curves alter when spatially uncorrelated or autocorrelated habitat destruction is added, and (2) which functional types of species are able to survive under these altered conditions. Model communities consisted of four functional types of species trading off between colonisation ability and competition strength. We found that habitat destruction may alter both height and shape of diversity-disturbance curves: maximum diversity at intermediate disturbance rates may shift to other disturbance rates or even split into two peaks giving rise to bimodal diversity-disturbance relationships with different sub-communities persisting at low and high disturbance rates. Diversity responded differentially depending on how the colonisation-competition trade-off was represented. Our results suggest that, for trade-offs in seed production rate, generally the best coloniser will better withstand the interacting effects of habitat destruction and changing disturbance rates; however, for trade-offs in mean dispersal distances, functional types characterized by intermediate abilities will perform best. We conclude that predictions of the impacts of changing disturbance rates on biodiversity depend on community structure and cannot be made without knowledge of concurrent permanent habitat destruction. 相似文献
