Rural change in Cambodia manifests itself in rapidly declining land availability for the smallholder sector, posing the question of how farmers may be able to deal with limited access to land. In this paper, we discuss with a case study village and household livelihood strategies of smallholders currently operating under land-constrained conditions. Based on an integrated assessment of a smallholder village in Kampot province, we illustrate in quantitative terms how land shortage is creating problems of surplus generation and liquidity issues in monetary and non-monetary flows. At the household level, livelihood diversification based on the involvement of productive resources other than land may play an increasing role, particularly in the future, when levels of land shortage may increase. At the village level, smallholder may respond through institutional innovation, in particular through the establishment of a community banking system and a paddy rice bank to provide money and rice credits to overcome transitory shortages and to cover investment costs for additional productive resources. Thus, in this case, we observe the emergence of new patterns of livelihood in rural areas, based on the integration of non-land-based economic activities and new institutional settings. 相似文献

Abandoning fossil fuels and increasingly relying on low-density, land-intensive renewable energy will increase demand for land, affecting current global and regional rural–urban relationships. Over the past two decades, rural–urban relationships all over the world have witnessed unprecedented changes that have rendered their boundaries blurred and have lead to the emergence of “new ruralities.” In this paper, we analyze the current profiles of electricity generation and consumption in relation to sociodemographic variables related to the use of time and land across the territory of Catalonia, Spain. Through a clustering procedure based on multivariate statistical analysis, we found that electricity consumption is related to functional specialization in the roles undertaken by different types of municipalities in the urban system. Municipality types have distinctive metabolic profiles in different sectors depending on their industrial, services or residential role. Villages’ metabolism is influenced by urban sprawl and industrial specialization, reflecting current “new ruralities.” Segregation between work activity and residence increases both overall electricity consumption and its rate (per hour) and density (per hectare) of dissipation. A sustainable spatial organization of societal activities without the use of fossil fuels or nuclear energy would require huge structural and sociodemographic changes to reduce energy demand and adapt it to regionally available renewable energy. 相似文献

Fog composition and deposition fluxes of fog waterand fog solutes were measured in six radiation fogevents in San Joaquin Valley, California duringwinter 1998/1999. Measurements made at 2 hrintervals with 0.30 m2 and 0.06 m2 Teflondeposition plates yielded excellent reproducibility(relative standard deviations of 3.8–6.0%) forwater, nitrate, sulfate and ammonium. Water fluxesmeasured at 5 min intervals with a recordingbalance agreed well with the deposition platemeasurements before 8:00 AM. After 8:00 AMevaporation proved problematic. The averagedeposition velocity from the study for fog nitrate(3.8 cm s-1) was less than those for fogsulfate (5.1 cm s-1) and ammonium (6.7 cms-1). All three species generally exhibitedsmaller deposition velocities than fog water. Thespecies dependent trend in deposition velocitieswas consistent with preferential enrichment ofthese species in small fog drops (nitrate > sulfate> ammonium). 相似文献

This article brings forth recommendations from a workshop sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Science
to Achieve Results (STAR) and Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (EMAP) Programs and by the Council of State Governments,
held during May 2002 in Kansas City, Kansas. The workshop assembled microbial ecologists and environmental scientists to determine
what research and science is needed to bring existing molecular biological approaches and newer technologies arising from
microbial genomic research into environmental monitoring and water quality assessments. Development of genomics and proteomics
technologies for environmental science is a very new area having potential to improve environmental water quality assessments.
The workshop participants noted that microbial ecologists are already using molecular biological methods well suited for monitoring
and water quality assessments and anticipate that genomics-enabled technologies could be made available for monitoring within
a decade. Recommendations arising from the workshop include needs for (i) identification of informative microbial gene sequences,
(ii) improved understandings of linkages between indicator taxa, gene expression and environmental condition, (iii) technological
advancements towards field application, and (iv) development of the appropriate databases.

In recent years, protracted crises and fragile post‐conflict settings have challenged the co‐existence, and even the linear continuum, of relief and development aid. Forced migration has tested humanitarian and development paradigms where sudden‐onset emergencies, violence and displacement arise alongside ongoing development work. Drawing on Médecins Sans Frontières interventions in the region from December 2010 to May 2011, this paper examines aid and healthcare responses to displacement in Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia; it focuses on challenges to the maintenance of preparedness for such foreseeable emergencies and to adaptation in response to changing situations of displacement and insecurity. This ‘backsliding’ from development to emergency remains a substantial challenge to aid; yet, in exactly such cases, it also presents the opportunity to ensure access to medical care that is much more urgently needed in times of crisis, including the suspension of user fees for medical care. 相似文献

Wastes generated by animal agriculture have complex matrices and present a significant challenge for achieving accurate measurements of estrogens. The objective of this study was to compare two different extraction methods and two different biochemical and biological estrogen assays on two dairy manure matrices. The two extraction methods studied in this research were a two-step base-toluene extraction and a one-step cyclohexane extraction. The two assays assessed were an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a yeast estrogen screen (YES) bioassay. Estrogenic activity was measured directly as 17beta-estradiol (E2) through the ELISA method or as E2 equivalents (E2-eq) through the YES bioassay. Both extraction methods yielded reasonable recoveries from distilled water in the absence of matrix interferences. In manure samples, ELISA resulted in recoveries slightly higher than 100% in two types of dairy manures, but YES recoveries varied. The YES bioassay detected much higher estrogenic activities in dairy manure compared to the E2 concentrations measured by ELISA. The base-solvent extraction yielded higher E2 concentrations in dairy manure compared to the one-step cyclohexane extraction. These results suggest that manure matrices vary sufficiently that extraction methods must be optimized for specific assays utilized to quantify estrogens in manures. 相似文献

Land protection, whether public or private, is often controversial at the local level because residents worry about lost economic activity. We used panel data and a quasi-experimental impact-evaluation approach to determine how key economic indicators were related to the percentage of land protected. Specifically, we estimated the impacts of public and private land protection based on local area employment and housing permits data from 5 periods spanning 1990–2015 for all major towns and cities in New England. To generate rigorous impact estimates, we modeled economic outcomes as a function of the percentage of land protected in the prior period, conditional on town fixed effects, metro-region trends, and controls for period and neighboring protection. Contrary to narratives that conservation depresses economic growth, land protection was associated with a modest increase in the number of people employed and in the labor force and did not affect new housing permits, population, or median income. Public and private protection led to different patterns of positive employment impacts at distances close to and far from cities, indicating the importance of investing in both types of land protection to increase local opportunities. The greatest magnitude of employment impacts was due to protection in more rural areas, where opportunities for both visitation and amenity-related economic growth may be greatest. Overall, we provide novel evidence that land protection can be compatible with local economic growth and illustrate a method that can be broadly applied to assess the net economic impacts of protection. 相似文献

Riparian zones are critical for protecting water quality and wildlife, but are often impacted by human activities. Ongoing
threats and uncertainty about the effectiveness of buffer regulations emphasize the importance of monitoring riparian buffers
through time. We developed a method to rapidly categorize buffer width and landuse attributes using 2007 leaf-on aerial photography
and applied it to a 65 km section of the Toccoa River in north Georgia. We repeated our protocol using 1999 leaf-off aerial
photographs to assess the utility of our approach for monitoring. Almost half (45%) of the length of the Toccoa River was
bordered by buffers less than 50 ft wide in 2007, with agricultural and built-up lands having the smallest buffers. The percentage
of river length in each buffer width category changed little between 1999 and 2007, but we did detect a 5% decrease in agricultural
land use, a corresponding increase in built-up land use, and an additional 149 buildings within 100 ft of the river. Field
verification indicated that our method overestimated buffer widths and forested land use and underestimated built-up land
use and the number of buildings within 100 ft of the river. Our methodology can be used to rapidly assess the status of riparian
buffers. Including supplemental data (e.g., leaf-off imagery, road layers) will allow detection of the fine-scale impacts
underestimated in our study. Our results on the Toccoa River reflect historic impacts, exemptions and variances to regulations,
and the ongoing threat of vacation home development. We recommend additional monitoring, improvements in policy, and efforts
to increase voluntary protection and restoration of stream buffers. 相似文献

Abstract Volatile organlcs compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous in the air we breathe. The use of passive samplers to measure these concentrations can be an effective technique. When exposed for long durations, a passive sampler may be a good tool for investigating chronic exposures to chemicals in the environment. A passive sampler that was designed for occupational exposures can be used as such a tool. Laboratory validation under as many conditions as possible needs to be accomplished so as to characterize the sampler with known parameters. This paper describes the methods and results of an investigation into the validity of using a passive monitor to sample VOCs for a three-week period. Two concentration levels, two relative humidities, and five VOCs were studied. Results indicate that the samplers work best under conditions of high concentration with low relative humidity and low concentration with high relative humidity. For the passive sampler, excluding chloroform, percent deviations from the predicted values varied between ?41 and +22 percent; while the values between the passive and the active samplers varied between ?27 and +24 percent. Benzene, heptane, and perchloroethylene were sampled with equal precision and accuracy. 相似文献
