Phylogeny, niches, and relative abundance in natural communities 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Community structure refers to the number of species in a community and the pattern of distribution of individuals among those species. We use a novel way of representing community structure to show that abundance within closely related pairs of co-occurring tree species in a highly diverse Mexican forest is more equitable than is abundance within more distantly related pairs. This observation is at odds with the fundamental assumption of neutral models of community structure, i.e., that species are interchangeable. The observed patterns suggest niche apportionment, in which interaction is focused pairwise between congeners but falls away from the phylogenetic structure above the genus level. Thus niche processes may significantly affect community structure through regulating relative abundance in a substantial proportion of species, which in turn potentially enhances community stability. One such mechanism of stable coexistence has already been shown to be active in this forest. 相似文献

Widespread contribution of methane-cycle bacteria to the diets of lake profundal chironomid larvae 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Reports of unexpectedly 13C-depleted chironomid larvae in lakes have led to an hypothesis that significant transfer of detrital organic matter to chironomid larvae may occur via methane-cycle bacteria. However, to date little is known of how such transfer might vary across species and lakes. We gathered data from 87 lakes to determine how widespread this phenomenon might be and to define boundaries for its likely magnitude. Carbon stable isotope values of chironomid larvae varied greatly between taxa. Very marked 13C-depletion was evident only in certain taxa, especially Chironomus plumosus, C. anthracinus, and C. tenuistylus, all characteristic of eutrophic or dystrophic lakes and known to be tolerant of low oxygen conditions. Furthermore, marked 13C-depletion was only found in larvae from lakes in which late-summer hypolimnetic oxygen depletion near the sediment surface was below an apparent threshold concentration of 2-4 mg O2/L. Similarly, application of a two-source mixing model suggested that methanotrophic bacteria made the greatest contribution to profundal chironomid growth (0-70% of larval carbon) when the late-summer oxygen concentration dropped below approximately 2 mg O2/L. Our study demonstrates that methane-derived carbon is an important, but often neglected, contribution to the flux of carbon through the food webs of many productive or dystrophic lakes. 相似文献

The Trivers–Willard model predicts that in polygynous species, superior-quality females will maximize their fitness by producing
male offspring. Using a sample of 1,780 Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddellii) pups recorded over 31 years, we investigated relationships between offspring sex ratio and maternal age, reproductive experience,
an index of maternal lifetime reproductive output, and annual environmental variations. We found evidence that females with
higher index of lifetime reproductive output were more likely to produce male than female offspring but found only weak evidence
that large-scale environmental variations influenced sex ratios. Our results suggest that mothers manipulate offspring sex
to maximize their own fitness, and inherent maternal quality may influence offspring sex. These findings support the Trivers–Willard
sex-allocation model.

Communication signals used in animal social interactions are frequently performed repetitively, but the function of this repetition
is often not well understood. We examined the effects of signal repetition by investigating the behavior of worker honey bees
that received differing numbers of vibration signals in established and newly founded colonies, which could use signal repetition
differently to help adjust task allocations to the labor demands associated with the different stages of colony development.
In both colony types, more than half of all monitored workers received more than one vibration signal, and approximately 12%
received ≥5 signals during a given 20-min observation period. Vibrated recipients exhibited greater activity and task performance
than same-age non-vibrated controls at all levels of signal activity. However, vibrated workers showed similar levels of task
performance, movement rates, cell inspection rates, and trophallactic exchanges regardless of the number of signals received.
Thus, the repeated performance of vibration signals on individual bees did not cause cumulative increases in the activity
of certain workers, but rather may have functioned to maintain relatively constant levels of activity and task performance
among groups of recipients. The established and newly founded colonies did not differ in the extent to which individual workers
received the different numbers of vibration signals or in the levels of activity stimulated by repeated signals. Previous
work has suggested that compared to established colonies, newly founded colonies have a greater number of vibrators that perform
signals on a greater proportion of the workers they contact. Taken in concert, these results suggest that vibration signal
repetition may help to adjust task allocations to the different stages of colony development by helping to maintain similar
levels of activity among a greater total number of recipients, rather than by eliciting cumulative effects that cause certain

Although pathogen transmission dynamics are profoundly affected by population social and spatial structure, few studies have empirically demonstrated the population-level implications of such structure in wildlife. In particular, epidemiological models predict that the extent to which contact patterns are clustered decreases a pathogen’s ability to spread throughout an entire population, but this effect has yet to be demonstrated in a natural population. Here, we use network analysis to examine patterns of transmission of an environmentally transmitted parasite, Cryptosporidium spp., in Belding’s ground squirrels (Spermophilus beldingi). We found that the prevalence of Cryptosporidium was negatively correlated with transitivity, a measure of network clustering, and positively correlated with the percentage of juvenile males. Additionally, network transitivity decreased when there were higher percentages of juvenile males; the exploratory behavior demonstrated by juvenile males may have altered the structure of the network by reducing clustering, and low clustering was associated with high prevalence. We suggest that juvenile males are critical in mediating the ability of Cryptosporidium to spread through colonies, and thus may function as “super-spreaders.” Our results demonstrate the utility of a network approach in quantifying mechanistically how differences in contact patterns may lead to system-level differences in infection patterns. 相似文献

In this study, the refuse from 12 landfills of various ages ranging from fresh refuse to material 11 years old was collected, and changes in the bio-stability parameters were determined. The parameters measured included cellulose, lignin, biochemical methane potential (BMP) and volatile solids, along with plastics. These parameters, along with the cellulose to lignin ratio were compared to determine which were most indicative of the bio-stability of the refuse. Lignin and volatile solids measurements were affected by plastics in refuse samples. Plastics increased both lignin and volatile solids measurements by approximately 10%. Cellulose and volatile solids measurements correlated well with age, each other, and with BMP measurements and were therefore considered the best parameters to determine stability. Data for the Riverbend landfill, a landfill with a moisture content of 48%, which is similar to that of bioreactor landfills, showed that degradation was nearly complete after 5 years as indicated by low values for cellulose and BMP. 相似文献

This study presents carbon (δ13C) and hydrogen (δD) isotope values of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in various emission sources using thermal desorption-gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (TD-GC-irMS). The investigated VOCs ranged from C6 to C10. Samples were taken from (i) car exhaust emissions as well as from plant combustion experiments of (ii) various C3 and (iii) various C4 plants. We found significant differences in δ values of analysed VOCs between these sources, e.g. δ13C of benzene ranged between (i) −21.7 ± 0.2‰, (ii) −27.6 ± 1.6‰ and (iii) −16.3 ± 2.2‰, respectively and δD of benzene ranged between (i) −73 ± 13‰, (ii) −111 ± 10‰ and (iii) −70 ± 24‰, respectively. Results of VOCs present in investigated emission sources were compared to values from the literature (aluminium refinery emission). All source groups could be clearly distinguished using the dual approach of δ13C and δD analysis. The results of this study indicate that the correlation of compound specific carbon and hydrogen isotope analysis provides the potential for future research to trace the fate and to determine the origin of VOCs in the atmosphere using thermal desorption compound specific isotope analysis. 相似文献

Coal fly ash (CFA) is a significant environmental pollutant that presents a respiratory hazard when airborne. Although previous studies have identified the mineral components of CFA, there is a paucity of information on the structural habits of these minerals. Samples from UK, Polish and Chinese power stations were studied to further our understanding of the factors that affect CFA geochemistry and mineralogy. ICP-MS, FE-SEM/EDX, XRD, and laser diffraction were used to study physicochemical characteristics. Analysis revealed important differences in the elemental compositions and particle size distributions of samples between sites. Microscopy of HF acid-etched CFA revealed the mullite present possesses a fibrous habit; fibres ranged in length between 1 and 10 μm. Respirable particles (<10 μm) were frequently observed to contain fibrous mullite. We propose that the biopersistence of these refractory fibres in the lung environment could be contributing towards chronic lung diseases seen in communities and individuals continually exposed to high levels of CFA. 相似文献

To combat high rates of malnutrition in sub‐Saharan Africa, the UN Millennium Project has called for increased emphasis on technologies that explicitly link agricultural and nutritional components. While there is a large literature on the factors that influence household decisions to adopt new agricultural technologies with economic or environmental benefits, less is known about the factors that determine the uptake and continued use of agricultural technologies promoted exclusively for their health benefits. Using data from a 2004 survey in the Tamberma region of Togo and Benin, we identify factors that influence the adoption and disadoption of soybeans — a crop being promoted throughout West Africa for its high protein content. Similar to the literature on adoption of other sustainable agriculture technologies, we find that household preferences, resource endowments, and risk and uncertainty affect household decisions about soybeans. However, by analyzing decisions about initial uptake and continued cultivation separately, we uncover the importance of intrahousehold dynamics and experience with the soybean crop. To successfully address malnutrition through new agricultural technologies, researchers and rural extension agents should take a disaggregated view of technology adoption, seeking to identify and tailor their outreach to the different factors important at different stages of the dissemination process. 相似文献

A better understanding of relationships between human activities and water chemistry is needed to identify and manage sources
of anthropogenic stress in Great Lakes coastal wetlands. The objective of the study described in this article was to characterize
relationships between water chemistry and multiple classes of human activity (agriculture, population and development, point
source pollution, and atmospheric deposition). We also evaluated the influence of geomorphology and biogeographic factors
on stressor-water quality relationships. We collected water chemistry data from 98 coastal wetlands distributed along the
United States shoreline of the Laurentian Great Lakes and GIS-based stressor data from the associated drainage basin to examine
stressor-water quality relationships. The sampling captured broad ranges (1.5–2 orders of magnitude) in total phosphorus (TP),
total nitrogen (TN), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), total suspended solids (TSS), chlorophyll a (Chl a), and chloride; concentrations were strongly correlated with stressor metrics. Hierarchical partitioning and all-subsets
regression analyses were used to evaluate the independent influence of different stressor classes on water quality and to
identify best predictive models. Results showed that all categories of stress influenced water quality and that the relative
influence of different classes of disturbance varied among water quality parameters. Chloride exhibited the strongest relationships
with stressors followed in order by TN, Chl a, TP, TSS, and DIN. In general, coarse scale classification of wetlands by morphology (three wetland classes: riverine, protected,
open coastal) and biogeography (two ecoprovinces: Eastern Broadleaf Forest [EBF] and Laurentian Mixed Forest [LMF]) did not
improve predictive models. This study provides strong evidence of the link between water chemistry and human stress in Great
Lakes coastal wetlands and can be used to inform management efforts to improve water quality in Great Lakes coastal ecosystems. 相似文献
