Manipulative field studies are useful for investigating cause-effect relationships between contamination and benthic community health. However, there are many challenges for creating environmentally relevant exposures and determining what measurements are necessary to correctly interpret the results. This study describes the physical and chemical changes in the properties of metal-spiked marine sediments deployed in four different locations for up to 11 months. The test sediments lost between 20% and 75% of their volume during the deployment period, with the greatest losses occurring at sites affected by strong hydrodynamic activity. More sediment was lost from clean treatments than those spiked with high metal concentrations and corresponded with differential recruitment of infauna to these treatments. In general, a greater proportion of spiked-metals remained at lower energy sites (48-85%) than at higher energy sites (15-48%). The decreased metal concentrations were attributed mostly to the loss of the metal-spiked sediments (through resuspension) and their dilution with sediments depositing from the surrounding environment. A range of recommendations are made for optimising the information gained from field-based studies using metal-spiked sediments. These include the careful documentation of physico-chemical sediment properties pre- and post-deployment, the use of co-located sediment traps and knowledge of site-specific hydrodynamic processes. 相似文献

Understanding the behaviorally mediated indirect effects of predators in ecosystems requires knowledge of predator-prey behavioral interactions. In predator-ungulate-plant systems, empirical research quantifying how predators affect ungulate group sizes and distribution, in the context of other influential variables, is particularly needed. The risk allocation hypothesis proposes that prey behavioral responses to predation risk depend on background frequencies of exposure to risk, and it can be used to make predictions about predator-ungulate-plant interactions. We determined non-predation variables that affect elk (Cervus elaphus) group sizes and distribution on a winter range in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) using logistic and log-linear regression on surveys of 513 1-km2 areas conducted over two years. Employing model selection techniques, we evaluated risk allocation and other a priori hypotheses of elk group size and distributional responses to wolf (Canis lupus) predation risk while accounting for influential non-wolf-predation variables. We found little evidence that wolves affect elk group sizes, which were strongly influenced by habitat type and hunting by humans. Following predictions from the risk allocation hypothesis, wolves likely created a more dynamic elk distribution in areas that they frequently hunted, as elk tended to move following wolf encounters in those areas. This response should dilute elk foraging pressure on plant communities in areas where they are frequently hunted by wolves. We predict that this should decrease the spatial heterogeneity of elk impacts on grasslands in areas that wolves frequently hunt. We also predict that this should decrease browsing pressure on heavily browsed woody plant stands in certain areas, which is supported by recent research in the GYE. 相似文献

A Pb-mine site situated on acidic soil, but comprising of Ca-enriched islands around derelict buildings was used to study the spatial pattern of genetic diversity in Lumbricus rubellus. Two distinct genetic lineages (‘A’ and ‘B’), differentiated at both the mitochondrial (mtDNA COII) and nuclear level (AFLPs) were revealed with a mean inter-lineage mtDNA sequence divergence of approximately 13%, indicative of a cryptic species complex. AFLP analysis indicates that lineage A individuals within one central ‘ecological island’ site are uniquely clustered, with little genetic overlap with lineage A individuals at the two peripheral sites. FTIR microspectroscopy of Pb-sequestering chloragocytes revealed different phosphate profiles in residents of adjacent acidic and calcareous islands. Bioinformatics found over-representation of Ca pathway genes in ESTPb libraries. Subsequent sequencing of a Ca-transport gene, SERCA, revealed mutations in the protein's cytosolic domain. We recommend the mandatory genotyping of all individuals prior to field-based ecotoxicological assays, particularly those using discriminating genomic technologies. 相似文献

In this study, methods and approaches were developed and tested to assess changes in contaminant fluxes resulting from dam removal in a riverine system. Sediment traps and passive samplers were deployed to measure particulate and dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the water column prior to and following removal of a small, low-head dam in the Pawtuxet River, an urbanized river located in Cranston, RI, USA. During the study, concentrations of particulate and dissolved PAHs ranged from 21.5 to 103 μg/g and from 68 to 164 ng/L, respectively. Overall, temporal trends of PAHs showed no increases in either dissolved or particulate phases following removal of the dam. Dissolved concentrations of PCBs were very low, remaining below 1.72 ng/L at all sites. Particulate PCB concentrations across sites and time showed slightly greater variability, ranging from 80 to 469 ng/g, but with no indication that dam removal influenced any increases. Particulate PAHs and PCBs were sampled continuously at the site located below the dam and did not show sustained increases in concentration resulting from dam removal. The employment of passive sampling technology and sediment traps was highly effective in monitoring the concentrations and flux of contaminants moving through the river system. Variations in river flow had no effect on the concentration of contaminants in the dissolved or particulate phases, but did influence the flux rate of contaminants exiting the river. Overall, dam removal did not cause measurable sediment disturbance or increase the concentration or fluxes of dissolved or particulate PAHs and PCBs. This is due in large part to low volumes of impounded sediment residing above the dam and highly armored sediments in the river channel, which limited erosion. This paper presents a hedonic property price model of rural land in a natural resource management region of the Murray-Darling Basin in Australia. In traditional hedonic models, the marginal value of environmental amenities is estimated using distance to or size of the environmental asset. The approach applied in this study offers the potential for a richer set of information, where environmental assets are described in terms of their 'recreational attractiveness'. The level of recreational attractiveness is represented as latent variables that are based on park facilities and recreational activities offered at each site. For a property in the study area that is 1?km away from the River Murray, moving half a kilometre closer will increase the property price by $245,000, holding every other variable constant at the mean. This value is magnified by $27,000 if the house is in an area where there is high river recreational attractiveness and drops by $14,000 if river recreational attractiveness is low. By including recreational quality indices in a typical hedonic framework that is corrected for spatial dependency, the model is able to capture how individuals value environmental amenities around their homes based on the site's natural characteristics as well as recreational services. 相似文献

Approaches are discussed and illustrated for the analysis of the very large trace element data set obtained by instrumental neutron activation and emission spectroscopic analysis of over 700, 24 hour ambient air particulate samples collected at 16 sites in Cleveland, OH from August 1971 to October 1972. Examples are presented of the use of pairwise correlation statistics, cluster analysis algorithms, enrichment factors, and pollutant concentration roses to identify sources. It is demonstrated that some elemental constituents of the Cleveland suspended particulate can be related to specific source types: earth’s crust (Al, Si, Sc, Ti, V, La, Sn, Eu, Oy, Th), automotive exhaust (Pb, Br), metallurgy (Fe, Cr, Co) and specific industries (Sb, Hg). Abstract This paper reports on the performance of the Kimoto 180 sampler and the Wedding ambient PM10 beta gauge sampler. Monodisperse ammonium fluorescein test particles were generated in the laboratory and used to determine the penetration curve of the Kimoto 180 cyclonic inlet. It was found that the actual DpaSOof the Kimoto 180 inlet, 3.5 (xm, is much lower than the designated standard value, 10 um. In the field test, the two beta gauge samplers were collocated with an Andersen SA1200 high-volume sampler to compare their measured daily average PM10 concentrations. The low Dpa50 of the Kimoto 180 inlet serves to explain why its daily average PM10 concentrations were much lower than the actual PM10 concentrations found in the field study. In addition, the PM10 concentrations of the Kimoto 180 beta gauge sampler were found to be seriously affected by the water vapor content of the ambient air. In contrast, the daily average PM10 concentrations of the Wedding beta gauge sampler were found to be more accurate, and influences by ambient conditions were insignificant 相似文献

The sensitivities of eight benthic amphipods, Chaetocorophium cf. lucasi, Corophium colo, Grandidierella japonica, Hyale crassicornis, Hyale longicornis, Melita awa, Melita matilda and Melita plumulosa, to copper and zinc in water-only and whole-sediment toxicity tests were compared. Whole-sediment tests used copper- (1300 mg/kg) and zinc- (4000 mg/kg) spiked sediments after equilibration for sufficient time to produce pore water and overlying water concentrations below the lowest observable effect concentrations of water-only exposures. Survival of adults (after 10 d) and juveniles (after 96 h), and the metal concentrations in the body tissues of adults, were determined at the end of the tests. Two epibenthic amphipods from the genus Melita were the most sensitive species to aqueous copper and zinc, with a 96-h LC50 value of 120 microg Cu/l for both M. awa and M. plumulosa juveniles, and a 96-h LC50 value of 640 microg Zn/l for juveniles of M. plumulosa. Juvenile amphipods (7-d old) were more sensitive than adult amphipods (>30-d old) in both water-only and whole-sediment tests, with adult-LC50/juvenile-LC50 ratios in water-only tests ranging from 1.2 to l.5 for copper and 1 to 1.4 for zinc. All species except C. colo, C. cf. lucasi and M. matilda were sensitive to the copper-spiked sediment, with survival between 14% and 74% of controls. Similarly, all species except C. colo and G. japonica, showed a response to the zinc-spiked sediment (26-81% of control survival).
