The sponge Latrunculia magnifica was found to be toxic for fish. A toxin has been isolated from this sponge by organic extraction-column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Several chemical properties of the toxin were determined by spectroscopic analysis. Toxicity tests were performed on the fish Gambusia affinis. In vitro experiments showed the toxin to be a cholinesterase inhibitor. 相似文献

The role of isopods and amphipods in the initial fragmentation of eelgrass detritus in Nova Scotia,Canada 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Daytime observations on the isopods Idotea phosphorea and I. baltica and the amphipod Gammarus oceanicus held in laboratory microcosms showed that I. phosphorea and G. oceanicus spent 45% and 30% respectively, of their active time feeding on dead, intact eelgrass leaves which had been recently released from plants. I. baltica spent 41% of its active time consuming intact green leaves. The shredding of intact dead leaves by I. phosphorea and G. oceanicus resulted in production of small detrital particles which were liberated from the faeces of the invertebrates and this type of feeding led to the breakdown of whole leaves. Field experiments which separated the effects of shredding by invertebrates and grinding by waves and ice on the loss of weight from leaf packs showed that relative to controls isopods significantly increased weight loss from dead leaves. Loss of weight from leaf packs exposed to both biotic and physical shredding forces was not significantly different from that found on those exposed only to shredding by isopods. However, trends in the data indicated that fragmentation of whole, dead leaves in the field probably is a result of the synergistic effects of shredding by invertebrates and physical factors, particularly ice grinding. The role played by invertebrates in fragmenting intact, dead leaves is discussed in the light of energy flow and nutrient cycling within seagrass systems. 相似文献

Larvae of Pleuroncodes monodon (Milne-Edwards, 1837), a red crab of commercial importance in South America, were reared in the laboratory at 2 different temperatures (15° and 20°C), from hatching up to the last larval stage. The 5 typical stages, with their corresponding functional appendages, are described and figured. The main characteristics useful in differentiating larvae of P. monodon from those of the other Chilean species of Galatheidae and its northern congener P. planipes are discussed. In many animals, territoriality will arise or cease depending on environmental factors such as intruder rate and resource availability. We investigated the effect of rearing environment on territorial behaviour in ~1.5-month-old brown trout. In the laboratory, wild-caught (reared at a low density) and hatchery-reared (high density) trout were allowed to defend a territory against a size-matched intruder reared in the same or the other environment. Because territorial behaviour should be relaxed at high-rearing densities, we hypothesized that hatchery-reared trout should value their territories less and therefore invest less in defence compared with wild-caught trout. However, in all cases, territory owners were more likely to win the contest and hatchery-reared trout were just as likely as wild-reared to win mixed contests. Furthermore, pairs of hatchery-reared trout initiated contests sooner, fought longer and were more aggressive during the contest compared with pairs of wild trout. When hatchery-reared owners met wild intruders, the contest ended sooner compared with when the roles were reversed. We conclude that territorial behaviour in brown trout is largely innate, but that the hatchery environment has promoted more aggressive individuals. These results suggest that hatchery-reared trout invest more time and energy to obtain the same contest success as wild trout. In conclusion, the lack of experience of territorial defence in a high-density rearing environment seems to reduce the efficiency of territorial behaviour. In turn, this may have negative consequences for the performance of released hatchery fish in the wild. 相似文献

Veneridae, a cosmopolitan and ubiquitous family in world-wide littoral environments, lists more than 500 species, many of which are often subject to intensive commercial exploitation due to their numerical dominance in benthic communities. Historically, the family has been divided into 12 subfamilies by M. Keen and, even though this taxonomical arrangement was adopted for convenience and does not necessarily reflect genetic relationships, as suggested by Keen herself, this classification is still accepted. To contribute to clarify the systematics and phylogeny of Veneridae, the portion of the nucleotide sequence corresponding to domains IV and V of the gene encoding the large subunit of mitochondrial ribosomal RNA was analysed in 14 species representative of 10 genera belonging to 6 different subfamilies. The results obtained using the maximum-parsimony and neighbour-joining methods indicate that the current placement of the genera into subfamilies does not always reflect a natural subdivision. In addition, the six species of Tapetinae studied, though confirmed to be a monophyletic clade, do not exhibit a correct attribution at the genus level. 相似文献

The reproductive status of the holothuroid species Isostichopus badionotus (Selenka, 1867) and Holothuria mexicana (Ludwig, 1875) was studied over 16 months in Bocas del Toro (Panama), from November 1999 to February 2001. Sexual reproduction was evaluated by the gonad index method, and by histology of gonad development. In addition, population structure was assessed based on sex ratio, minimum reproductive size, and length and weight distributions of males and females. The sex ratio in both species was 1:1, with a unimodal population distribution composed mainly of mature individuals. The minimum reproductive length and weight were 13-20 cm and 150 g, respectively, for both species, although reproductive individuals 10 cm in length were also found. A consistently higher gonad index was observed in H. mexicana, due to a high proportion of mature females and males and high gonad indices in most monthly samples. Gametogenesis and spawning patterns seemed to occur throughout the year, with periods of enhanced activity. Two periods of maximum reproductive activity were tentatively identified: July-November for I. badionotus and February-July for H. mexicana, but neither species had a single, sharply defined annual spawning event. Further work on these exploited holothuroids should examine the relationships between reproduction and environmental factors and between reproductive status and recruitment. 相似文献

During the artificial reproduction of salmonides, the fecundity can be increased either by improving the viability of spermatozoa,
or by extending the time period during which a roe micropile remains open, thus allowing its fecundation. Practically, this
can be achieved by the use of some fertilising techniques suitable for fish species. Here, we show that the reproduction of
rainbow trout in a 1:1 solution of deuterium-depleted water and distilled water led to a significant increase in survival
of roes during their embryonic development. Moreover, the addition of glucose and fructose into the deuterium-depleted fertilising

From deep ( 1000 m), multi-depth zooplankton samples taken in the Azores frontal region from November 1980 to June 1981, high numbers of the two larval forms ofLepas pectinata, the commonest lepadid cirripede in this area, were sampled. The nauplii and cyprid larvae are large and long-lived. Nauplii were sampled where they feed, in the upper 150 m, closely associated with the fluorescence maximum. The cyprids were mainly sampled between 300 and 400 m, with a sharp cut-off in numbers just below the distribution peak. This deep distribution is intriguing, as the cyprids, which were not migrating diurnally, are non-feeding. To complete their life cycle they must settle on floating debris at the surface, where very few were sampled. They are negatively buoyant and there is no apparent physical reason for this deep distribution. There was no obvious pattern of changes in individual length or length/dry weight distribution with depth, the population appeared homogeneous. There was also no accumulation of other zooplankton at the same depth, or evidence from gut contents of large carnivores that the distribution pattern was caused by selective predation. A close association exists betweenL. pectinata andSargassum spp. weed, the cyprids preferentially settling on small fragments of weathered weed, the supply of which may be enhanced after winter. During winter, the harsh environment at the surface of the northern Sargasso Sea may discourage cyprid settlement. The deep distribution may be an ontogenetic migration conferring some survival advantage and saving energy due to the lower temperature and oxygen levels at depth. If it is a behavioural mechanism, duration of the cyprid stage will be extended until a more clement time of year, allowing them to settle over a longer period. The cyprids of other species were also sampled at depth, so the phenomenon appears to be widespread. If subsequent research confirms these observations as an ontogenetic migration, our current understanding of the fouling behaviour of oceanic lepadid cirripedes would be considerably modified. 相似文献
