To achieve sustainable range management and avoid or minimize environmental contamination, the Army needs to know the amount of explosives deposited on ranges from different munitions and how these are degraded and transported under different geological and climatic conditions. The physical form of the deposited explosives has a bearing on this problem, yet the shapes and size distributions of the explosive particles remaining after detonations are not known. We collected residues from 8 high-order and 6 low-order non-tactical detonations of TNT-filled 155-mm rounds. We found significant variation in the amount of TNT scattered from the high-order detonations, ranging from 0.00001 to 2% of the TNT in the original shell. All low-order detonations scattered percent-level amounts of TNT. We imaged thousands of TNT particles and determined the size, mass and surface-area distributions of particles collected from one high-order and one low-order detonation. For the high-order detonation, particles smaller than 1 mm contribute most of the mass and surface area of the TNT scattered. For the low-order detonation, most of the scattered TNT mass was in the form of un-heated, centimeter-sized pieces whereas most of the surface area was again from particles smaller than 1 mm. We also observed that the large pieces of TNT disintegrate readily, giving rise to many smaller particles that can quickly dissolve. We suggest picking up the large pieces of TNT before they disintegrate to become point sources of contamination.  相似文献

The photolysis of caffeine was studied in solutions of fulvic acid isolated from Suwannee River, GA (SRFA) and Old Woman Creek Natural Estuarine Research Reserve, OH (OWCFA) with different chemical amendments (nitrate and iron). Caffeine degrades slowly by direct photolysis (>170 h in artificial sunlight), but we observed enhanced photodegradation in waters containing the fulvic acids. At higher initial concentrations (10 μM) the indirect photolysis of caffeine occurs predominantly through reaction with the hydroxyl radical (OH) generated by irradiated fulvic acids. Both rate constant estimates based upon measured OH steady-state concentrations and quenching studies using isopropanol corroborate the importance of this pathway. Further, OH generated by irradiated nitrate at concentrations present in wastewater effluent plays an important role as a photosensitizer even in the presence of fulvic acids, while the photo-Fenton pathway does not at neutral or higher pH. At lower initial concentrations (0.1 μM) caffeine photolysis reactions proceed even more quickly in fulvic acid solutions and are influenced by both short- and long-lived reactive species. Studies conducted under suboxic conditions suggest that an oxygen dependent long-lived radical e.g., peroxyl radicals plays an important role in the degradation of caffeine at lower initial concentration.  相似文献

The effect of clouds on total and UV-B irradiance in Córdoba, Argentina, was studied employing the TUV 4.1 model and measurements obtained with YES UVB-1 and YES TSP-700 radiometers, and a spectral radiometer Ocean Optics USB-4000. The experimental measurements were selected from a 10 years dataset (1999–2008). Clouds were classified by direct observation as cirrus, cumulus, and stratocumulus. The broadband Cloud Modification Factors (CMFs) have been calculated in the range of the total and the UV-B radiation for these types of clouds. The relations between them were analyzed for a significant number of days. The broadband CMF values range from around 0.1 up to 1.25, depending on the wavelength interval and on the cloud type. The CMFUVB versus CMFT plots for different clouds have shown good adjustments and significant differences, which allows the distinction between them.Stratocumulus clouds show large attenuations and a linear relation with larger slopes as the solar zenith angle (SZA) increases. For this type of clouds an average slope of (1.0 ± 0.2) was found. The relation between the CMF for cumulus clouds is linear with an average slope of (0.61 ± 0.01). No dependence with the SZA was observed. Cirrus clouds plots show an exponential behavior with fit parameters equal to (0.48 ± 0.08) and (0.68 ± 0.15). However, when small SZA intervals are analyzed a linear relation is found. When the relations between the CMF were similar (cumulus and cirrus), the spectral variation in the UV range (320–420 nm) of a modified CMF (CMFm) was used to distinguish them. Hence, the spectral differences among the three types of clouds have been also analyzed for several days and SZA. Here, it was found that the effect of cirrus is essentially wavelength independent while cumulus and stratocumulus clouds show exponential decay relations but with different ordinates.In the analyzed relations the microphysical properties of the clouds seem to determine its behavior while the optical thickness leads to the different degrees of attenuation.The results obtained in this work are in agreement with those found for other authors.  相似文献

Following the feasibility study of sour compression process as a novel purification method of producing NOx-free, SO2-free oxyfuel-derived CO2 using actual fluegas, in this paper, we present the study of the individual reactions taking place in the process in a controlled environment. We have previously showed that an increase of NO/NO2 concentration in the inlet stream is beneficial for SO2 removal as NO2 promotes SO2 oxidation and the further removal as liquid acid. In this study we show that the reaction SO2 + NO2  SO3 + NO does not take place significantly in the absence of liquid water at a range of conditions relevant to the sour compression process. When liquid water is present, SO2 is oxidised by NO2 regenerating NO with the rate of conversion of SO2 being dependent on the acid concentration in the liquid. The formation of small liquid droplets where very low levels of pH (?0) can be reached is shown to be of great importance to the SO2 + NO2 conversion process.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to test various aspects of Appleton's Prospect-Refuge Theory. Hypotheses derived from the theory predicted that observers would rate how safe from crime they would feel in specific urban environments on the basis of whether the environments offered visibility (light), prospect (open spaces) and unambiguous refuge (a place where a criminal would not see the intended victim, or where other, non-threatening people were likely to to be present). It was further hypothesized that women in general would feel less safe from crime than men. In Study 1, University students generated lists of environmental features relevant to safety. Light was the most frequently mentioned factor, followed by open space and unambiguous refuge. In Study 2, slides were presented in which these three characteristics were independently varied. The results supported all of the hypotheses.  相似文献

Oxyfuel combustion in a pulverised fuel coal-fired power station produces a raw CO2 product containing contaminants such as water vapour plus oxygen, nitrogen and argon derived from the excess oxygen for combustion, impurities in the oxygen used, and any air leakage into the system. There are also acid gases present, such as SO3, SO2, HCl and NOx produced as byproducts of combustion. At GHGT8 (White and Allam, 2006) we presented reactions that gave a path-way for SO2 to be removed as H2SO4 and NO and NO2 to be removed as HNO3. In this paper we present initial results from the OxyCoal-UK project in which these reactions are being studied experimentally to provide the important reaction kinetic information that is so far missing from the literature. This experimental work is being carried out at Imperial College London with synthetic flue gas and then using actual flue gas via a sidestream at Doosan Babcock's 160 kW coal-fired oxyfuel rig. The results produced support the theory that SOx and NOx components can be removed during compression of raw oxyfuel-derived CO2 and therefore, for emissions control and CO2 product purity, traditional FGD and deNOx systems should not be required in an oxyfuel-fired coal power plant.  相似文献

The nitrates (NO(3)-N) lost through subsurface drainage in the Midwest often exceed concentrations that cause deleterious effects on the receiving streams and lead to hypoxic conditions in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The use of drainage and water quality models along with observed data analysis may provide new insight into the water and nutrient balance in drained agricultural lands and enable evaluation of appropriate measures for reducing NO(3)-N losses. DRAINMOD-NII, a carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) simulation model, was field tested for the high organic matter Drummer soil in Indiana and used to predict the effects of fertilizer application rate and drainage water management (DWM) on NO-N losses through subsurface drainage. The model was calibrated and validated for continuous corn (Zea mays L.) (CC) and corn-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] (CS) rotation treatments separately using 7 yr of drain flow and NO(3)-N concentration data. Among the treatments, the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency of the monthly NO(3)-N loss predictions ranged from 0.30 to 0.86, and the percent error varied from -19 to 9%. The medians of the observed and predicted monthly NO(3)-N losses were not significantly different. When the fertilizer application rate was reduced ~20%, the predicted NO(3)-N losses in drain flow from the CC treatments was reduced 17% (95% confidence interval [CI], 11-25), while losses from the CS treatment were reduced by 10% (95% CI, 1-15). With DWM, the predicted average annual drain flow was reduced by about 56% (95% CI, 49-67), while the average annual NO(3)-N losses through drain flow were reduced by about 46% (95% CI, 32-57) for both tested crop rotations. However, the simulated NO(3)-N losses in surface runoff increased by about 3 to 4 kg ha(-1) with DWM. For the simulated conditions at the study site, implementing DWM along with reduced fertilizer application rates would be the best strategy to achieve the highest NO(3)-N loss reductions to surface water. The suggested best strategies would reduce the NO(3)-N losses to surface water by 38% (95% CI, 29-46) for the CC treatments and by 32% (95% CI, 23-40) for the CS treatments.  相似文献

Two new intermediates rising from the photolytic reaction of the sulfonylurea herbicide oxasulfuron have been identified in aqueous environment. The higher concentrations of the two derivatives oxetan-3-yl 2-(formilsulfamoyl) benzoate and N-(4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidin-2-yl) formamide were reached within 8 h of UV-irradiation. Here we demonstrate that an optimal separation and analysis of such compounds can be achieved by using a novel analytical method based on “non-aqueous” capillary electrophoresis (CE) system joined to an electrospray ionisation-mass spectrometry equipment. Using such a separation method and a particular electrophoretic solution a high reproducibility of migration times and peak areas can be obtained.  相似文献

Ultrasound is a commonly employed imaging modality in obstetrics and is generally regarded as safe to the fetus. Current ultrasound technology, however, has significantly higher output potential than older machines used in most clinical studies, and the safety profile for the increasing use of Doppler, 3-dimensional (D) and 4-D ultrasound with modern machines is unknown. This article reviews the current status of ultrasound safety within obstetrics, including proposed mechanisms of harm, existing scientific and clinical evidence regarding those mechanisms, and considerations of safety for the clinical user.
