The insect immune system faces various challenges; particularly in social bees, caste system and age polyethism expose individuals to numerous environmental and working conditions. However, little is known about how cellular defenses in social bees may be organized to respond to a variety of immune challenges. Here, we describe the morphological features and the total and differential counts of hemocytes in different female classes (newly emerged workers, nurses, foragers, and virgin queens) of the eusocial stingless bee Melipona quadrifasciata. Granulocytes and prohemocytes were, respectively, the most and the least abundant cells among all classes of females. Furthermore, there were more prohemocytes in virgin queens than in foragers. The total number of hemocytes was smaller in foragers, whereas the largest number was observed in nurse workers. This reduced amount of hemocytes in foragers might allow energy savings to perform colony activities such as foraging and defense. Foragers also had the biggest hemocytes (either prohemocytes, granulocytes, or plasmatocytes) in comparison to the other classes of females, which might have arisen as a compensation for the reduction in number of these cells during aging. These results suggest that profiles of hemocytes of M. quadrifasciata vary according to the caste and age of this eusocial bee.  相似文献

Veligers ofCrepidula fornicata (L.) were reared for 12 days at constant temperatures of 15°, 20°, 25°, 30° and 35°C, and at 5 C° daily cycles of equal periodicity (COEP) over the temperature ranges 15° to 20°C, 20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C and 30° to 35°C. COEP consisted of equal periods (6 h) of maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and uniformly increasing and decreasing temperature each 24 h period. Survival was high and not influenced by cyclic or constant temperature from 15° to 30°C. At 35°C and COEP 30° to 35°C, all larvae died before Day 6. Shell growth rate increased markedly over the range 15° to 25°C, and growth rates at cyclic temperatures in this range were intermediate between growth rates at the corresponding constant temperatures. Larvae reared at COEP 15° to 20°C and COEP 30° to 35°C had discontinuities in their shells due to inhibition of shell secretion during the adverse part of each temperature cycle. Groups ofc. fornicata veligers were exposed for 2 days to daily temperature cycles of equal and unequal periodicity in the critical 30° to 35°C range. [Cycles of unequal periodicity (COUP) consisted of unequal periods (varying between 3 and 15 h) of maximum and minimum temperature and uniformly increasing and decreasing temperature each 24 h period.] These veligers showed shell growth although their body tissue declined, as indicated by decreasing carbon content per larva. Least shell growth and most body tissue loss occurred in those cycles with the longest exposure to higher temperature. Larvae exposed for arious days to the mildest 30° to 35°C COUP (15 h at 30°C, 3 h increasing temperature, 3 h at 35°C and 3 h decreasing temperature) recovered and resumed normal growth when transferred to constant 30°C, but their growth was retarded in proportion to the number of days in the temperature cycle. Rates of shell growth of veligers in temperature cycles show an immediate effect of environmental temperature, while changes in carbon content per larva better reflect the effects of temperature on general metabolism and survival.  相似文献

Effects of solar radiation on phenolic compound concentrations and photosynthetic activity, estimated as in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence, in the brown alga Cystoseira tamariscifolia (Hudson) Papenfuss were analyzed in southern Spain from June 1988 to July 2000. Annual and diurnal variations of optimum quantum yield were negatively correlated with incident irradiance. Optimum quantum yield decreased as irradiance increased at noon, and yield values recovered in the afternoon suggesting a dynamic photoinhibition. The annual and daily fluctuations of phenolic compound concentration in the tissue of C. tamariscifolia showed contrasting patterns. There was an annual cycle of phenolic compound concentration in the apical thallus, which was positively correlated with incident irradiance. The increase in phenolic compounds, however, was twofold greater in the first half of the year than the decrease during the second half of the year. In contrast to the annual cycle, there appeared to be a negative correlation between phenolic compound concentration and irradiance in the summer months while no specific relationship was observed in the fall–winter months. Loss of phenolic compounds from the tissue to the surrounding water was increased as irradiation dosage increased. This suggests that the decrease of phenolic compounds during the diurnal cycle might be regulated by the exudation of these compounds at high irradiances in the field. Collectively, our results suggest that, like dynamic photoinhibition, the rapid synthesis and turnover time of phenolic compounds in the tissue of C. tamariscifolia might serve as photoprotective mechanisms against high irradiances.  相似文献

The theory that fluctuating asymmetry is sensitive to both environmental and genetic stress is gaining acceptance among evolutionary biologists. Most empirical work has focused on ornamental traits on the assumption that they are more susceptible to stress. In tegumentary coloration is a common ornament in nature, and frequently has a hormonal basis. Earlier studies in the lizard Psammodromus algirus indicate that testosterone induces the development of head nuptial coloration in large males and, at the same time, produces an increase of the ectoparasite load and higher mortality. Hence, the manipulation of testosterone levels may be a way to increase ornament expression and simultaneously create conditions that may make symmetrical development difficult. This positive covariation between character size and symmetry is opposite to that expected in theory for sexually selected traits, so the predicted elevation of asymmetry due to the treatment cannot be confounded by any intrinsic association between symmetry and character size. We firstly consider the effect that testosterone supplementation has on two variables that reflect the symmetry of bilateral throat nuptial coloration in large P. algirus males. Also, we examine whether ornament symmetry is positively associated with reproductive success, a prediction of theory of sexually selected symmetry. Testosterone treatment did not increase the fluctuating asymmetry of throat coloration. Size asymmetry increased with character size in individuals with a fragmented colour pattern, but changed suddenly to a highly symmetric pattern in individuals with non-fragmented coloration. Mirror asymmetry decreased steadily with character size. These results suggest that the development of coloration on both sides of the throat midline follows a random pattern. Asymmetry did not correlate with variables that estimated reproductive success, suggesting that asymmetry is not affected by physiological stress and that this trait is not a sexually selected signal in P. algirus. The spatial and temporal distribution of the copepodEurytemora affinis hirundoides (Nordquist, 1888) in the Gironde estuary, southwest France, was investigated in 1976, and between 1981 and 1983. The distribution pattern of the population bore a clear relationship to the patterns of water circulation and transport of particulate matter. Laboratory experiments suggested thatE. affinis hirundoides is incapable of autonomous displacement against the direction of general circulation and behaves as passive particles. A major problem faced by species living in estuaries is that of the maintenance of endemic populations. Some authors have suggested that behavioural responses may play an important role in minimising population losses. Our study indicated that hydrodynamic processes are sufficient to explain the distribution and retention ofE. affinis hirundoides, whose populations are retained in the estuary in the same manner as the suspended sediment. Since the outflow of particulate matter from the Gironde estuary to the sea is very sporadic, we hypothesize that most of the production ofE. affinis hirundoides remains within the estuary, and does not fertilize the continental shelf, at least not in the form of particulate organic matter.  相似文献

We directly compare trip willingness to pay (WTP) values between dichotomous choice contingent valuation (DCCV) and discrete choice experiment (DCE) stated preference surveys of private party Grand Canyon whitewater boaters. The consistency of DCCV and DCE estimates is debated in the literature, and this study contributes to the body of work comparing the methods. Comparisons were made of mean WTP estimates for four hypothetical Colorado River flow-level scenarios. Boaters were found to most highly value mid-range flows, with very low and very high flows eliciting lower WTP estimates across both DCE and DCCV surveys. Mean WTP precision was estimated through simulation. No statistically significant differences were detected between the two methods at three of the four hypothetical flow levels.  相似文献

This 8-week study evaluates the effects of customized foot orthoses on work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) of metal industry workers. These WMSDs were evaluated applying the Nordic musculoskeletal questionnaire (NMQ) at three different times (start, 4th week and 8th week) and additional questions were also formulated to obtain information about adaptation, fatigue, comfort and possible improvements. According to the NMQ results, statistical significance was found in the improvements after 4?weeks (p?<?0.05 in two areas, p?<?0.01 in three areas, p?<?0.001 in two areas and no significance in the other two) and after 8?weeks (p?<?0.01 in three areas, p?<?0.001 in four areas and no significance in the other two). The additional questions indicated fatigue reduction (both in general and in lower extremity), comfort level increase (after the adaptation period) and good acceptance, according to workers’ answers, suggesting customized orthoses can be effective in reducing and preventing WMSDs in several body regions.  相似文献

Assessment of water resources requires reliable rainfall data, and rain gauge networks may not provide adequate spatial representation due to limited point measurements. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) provides rainfall data at global scale, and has been used with good results. However, TRMM data are an indirect measurement of rainfall, and therefore must be validated for its proper use. In this work, a validation scheme was designed and implemented to compare the TRMM Version 7 (V7) monthly rainfall product at different time frames with data measured in two hydrologic subregions of the Santiago River Basin (SRB) in Mexico: Río Alto Santiago and Río Bajo Santiago (RBS). Additionally, three physio‐climatic regions provide an assessment of the interplay of topography, distance from coastal regions, and seasonal weather patterns on the correspondence between both datasets. The TRMM V7 rainfall product exhibited good agreement with the rain gauge data particularly for the RBS and for the whole SRB during wettest summer and autumn seasons. However, strong regional dependence was observed due to differences in climate and topography. Overall, in spite of some noted underestimations, the monthly TRMM V7 rainfall product was found to provide useful information that can be used to complement limited monitoring as is the case of RBS. An improved combined rainfall product could be generated and thus gaining the most benefits from both data sources.  相似文献

World governments have committed to increase the global protected areas coverage by 2020, but the effectiveness of this commitment for protecting biodiversity depends on where new protected areas are located. Threshold‐ and complementarity‐based approaches have been independently used to identify important sites for biodiversity. We brought together these approaches by performing a complementarity‐based analysis of irreplaceability in important bird and biodiversity areas (IBAs), which are sites identified using a threshold‐based approach. We determined whether irreplaceability values are higher inside than outside IBAs and whether any observed difference depends on known characteristics of the IBAs. We focused on 3 regions with comprehensive IBA inventories and bird distribution atlases: Australia, southern Africa, and Europe. Irreplaceability values were significantly higher inside than outside IBAs, although differences were much smaller in Europe than elsewhere. Higher irreplaceability values in IBAs were associated with the presence and number of restricted‐range species; number of criteria under which the site was identified; and mean geographic range size of the species for which the site was identified (trigger species). In addition, IBAs were characterized by higher irreplaceability values when using proportional species representation targets, rather than fixed targets. There were broadly comparable results when measuring irreplaceability for trigger species and when considering all bird species, which indicates a good surrogacy effect of the former. Recently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has convened a consultation to consolidate global standards for the identification of key biodiversity areas (KBAs), building from existing approaches such as IBAs. Our results informed this consultation, and in particular a proposed irreplaceability criterion that will allow the new KBA standard to draw on the strengths of both threshold‐ and complementarity‐based approaches.  相似文献
