A Lagrangian stochastic model is proposed as a tool that can be utilized in forecasting remedial performance and estimating the benefits (in terms of flux and mass reduction) derived from a source zone remedial effort. The stochastic functional relationships that describe the hydraulic "structure" and non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) "architecture" have been described in a companion paper (Enfield, C.G., Wood, A.L., Espinoza, F.P., Brooks, M.C., Annable, M., Rao, P.S.C., this issue. Design of aquifer remediation systems: (1) describing hydraulic structure and NAPL architecture using tracers. J. Contam. Hydrol.). The previously defined functions were used along with the properties of the remedial fluids to describe remedial performance. There are two objectives for this paper. First, is to show that a simple analytic element model can be used to give a reasonable estimate of system performance. This is accomplished by comparing forecast performance to observed performance. The second objective is to display the model output in terms of change in mass flux and mass removal as a function of pore volumes of remedial fluid injected. The modelling results suggest that short term benefits are obtained and related to mass reduction at the sites where the model was tested. 相似文献

After an exhaustive investigation, in 1997 the source of the milk contamination in Germany was traced to citrus pulp pellets originating from Brazil. It has been shown that lime was the source of the PCDD/F contamination of these products. After this conclusion, a continuous monitoring program has been performed over a two year period and the results are presented in this paper. Sauropod dinosaur bones are common in Mesozoic terrestrial sediments, but sauropod skulls are exceedingly rare—cranial materials
are known for less than one third of sauropod genera and even fewer are known from complete skulls. Here we describe the first
complete sauropod skull from the Cretaceous of the Americas, Abydosaurus mcintoshi, n. gen., n. sp., known from 104.46 ± 0.95 Ma (megannum) sediments from Dinosaur National Monument, USA. Abydosaurus shares close ancestry with Brachiosaurus, which appeared in the fossil record ca. 45 million years earlier and had substantially broader teeth. A survey of tooth
shape in sauropodomorphs demonstrates that sauropods evolved broad crowns during the Early Jurassic but did not evolve narrow
crowns until the Late Jurassic, when they occupied their greatest range of crown breadths. During the Cretaceous, brachiosaurids
and other lineages independently underwent a marked diminution in tooth breadth, and before the latest Cretaceous broad-crowned
sauropods were extinct on all continental landmasses. Differential survival and diversification of narrow-crowned sauropods
in the Late Cretaceous appears to be a directed trend that was not correlated with changes in plant diversity or abundance,
but may signal a shift towards elevated tooth replacement rates and high-wear dentition. Sauropods lacked many of the complex
herbivorous adaptations present within contemporaneous ornithischian herbivores, such as beaks, cheeks, kinesis, and heterodonty.
The spartan design of sauropod skulls may be related to their remarkably small size—sauropod skulls account for only 1/200th
of total body volume compared to 1/30th body volume in ornithopod dinosaurs. 相似文献

Stony corals are the foundation species of tropical reefs, and their structures can harbor a diverse range of mutualist taxa
that can confer important benefits, including provision of nutrients. Prominent among the associates of branching coral in
the genus Pocillopora are groups of zooplanktivorous damselfishes that take refuge in the coral to avoid their predators. In field and laboratory
experiments, we explored the effects of colonies of resident damselfishes on growth of their host corals. Laboratory studies
revealed a positive relationship between biomass of fish and output of ammonium. In the field, levels of ammonium were significantly
elevated in the water surrounding the branches of Pocillopora occupied by colonies of damselfish, particularly in time periods following active feeding by the fish. Experimental manipulation
of the presence of fish on host corals during a month-long field experiment revealed that corals hosting fish grew significantly
more than those that lacked fish, and coral growth was positively correlated with the biomass of resident fish. The Pocillopora colonies in the field experiment varied in the degree of openness of their branching structure, and dye studies indicated
that this affected their ability to retain waterborne nutrients. Together with biomass of resident fish, colony openness explained
76% of the variation in coral growth rate during the experiment. Corals can exhibit considerable morphological variability,
and mutualistic fish respond to colony architecture during habitat selection, with some species preferring more open-branched
forms. This makes it likely that corals may face tradeoffs in attracting resident fish and in retaining the nutrients they

Residential floor dust loading was measured on the smooth floor surface of 488 houses in Syracuse, New York, during the summers
of 2003 and 2004. Using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) wipe methods, pre-weighed Ghost Wipes, Lead Wipes, or Whatman
Filters were employed to collect duplicate samples from (predominantly) kitchens. The collection efficiency of the various
media was determined from multiple wipe tests and side-by-side comparisons. The results were normalized and aggregated at
the census tract level to determine whether spatial patterns of dust loading could be observed. Loading was found to be log-normally
distributed, with a geometric mean value of 0.311 g m−2 (29 mg of dust per square foot of floor); 95% of the observations fell in the range of 0.042–2.330 g m−2 (4–216 mg foot−2). The sampling for floor dust loading shows some bias for day of the week in which visits to the residential properties were
made. After a first-order correction for this effect, results were aggregated by census tract and mapped in a geographic information
system (GIS); strong spatial patterns can be identified in an inverse distance weighted mapping. The geographic patterns exhibit
a strong correlation with socio-economic/demographic covariates extracted from the 2000 census summaries. Dust mass on the
floors is positively correlated with renter-occupied properties and family size; it is negatively correlated with measures

Rapidly eroding soft rock cliffs typically retreat at rates in excess of several metres per year, thus allowing the resolution of linkages between cliff dynamics and a range of climatic and marine forcing factors. New evidence from UK coastline of East Anglian coastline, southern North Sea shows that unprotected soft rock cliffs at three widely-spaced locations all show similar variability in retreat behaviour on decadal timescales, which we attribute to changing patterns of storminess in these decades. The 1990s were characterized by frequent months in which the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO; a well-established measure of inter-annual climatic variability in North-West Europe) was extremely positive (more positive than +3) or extremely negative (more negative than ?3), while the 2000s showed few occurrences of such extreme values. Depression tracks in positive NAO phases make the East Anglian coast prone to storm surges in which raised water levels result from deeply developed low pressure systems, generally associated with westerly air streams. In negative NAO phases the region is prone to easterly airflow which results in periods of strong onshore wind. Both phases are associated with high energetics in the forcing factors. Decadal-scale variability in cliffline retreat rates has implications for the practice of coastal management and policy making and suggests that cliff system responses to global environmental change are not simply driven by secular sea level rise. 相似文献

Laboratory-scale tracer experiments were conducted to investigate the geochemical and hydrological processes that govern the fate and transport of organically chelated radionuclides and toxic metals in undisturbed saturated columns of weathered, fractured shale saprolite. Three long-term, reactive contaminant injections were pulsed onto three separate soil columns, with the following influent mixtures: (1) 109CdEDTA2−, (2) 109CdEDTA2− and 57,58Co(II)EDTA2−, and (3) 109CdEDTA2−, 57Co(III)EDTA−, and H51CrO4−. Both single and multiple species experiments were conducted to determine the importance of interaction between the contaminants and competition for surface sites. Flow interruption was used to identify physical and chemical non-equilibrium (PNE and CNE) which were caused by multiple pore-region flow and rate-limited chemical reactions, respectively. Reactive contaminant transport through the fractured, weathered shale was affected by sorption, redox, and dissociation reactions, which were mediated by soil organic matter and surficial oxides of Fe, Mn, and Al. The transport of CdEDTA2− was significantly influenced by ligand-promoted dissolution of subsurface Fe and Al sources, resulting in the liberation of Cd2+, Al(III)EDTA− and Fe(III)EDTA−. Flow interruption confirmed that the surface-mediated dissociation reaction was time-dependent, with the stability of the CdEDTA2− complex dependent on its residence time within the soil. The migration of Co(II)EDTA2− was dominated by oxidization to the highly stable Co(III)EDTA− species, and elevated effluent Mn2+ suggested that surficial Mn(IV) oxides likely catalyzed the redox reaction, though Fe-oxides may have also contributed to the reaction. Dissociation (12%) of the Co(II)EDTA2− complex was first observed during flow interruption, indicating that rate-limited dissociation of the complex by Fe-oxides may be significant under equilibrium conditions. The transport of HCrO4− was significantly altered by the reduction of mobile Cr(VI) to irreversibly bound Cr(III). The reduction reaction was catalyzed by surface-bound natural organic matter and flow interruption confirmed that the reaction was time-dependent. There was little evidence of competitive effects between the various contaminants in the multispecies experiments, since each was influenced by a different geochemical process during transport through the soil. The results of this study further support research findings that suggest anionic toxic metals and radionuclide–organic complexes can be significantly influenced by soil geochemical processes that can both enhance and impede the subsurface migration of these contaminants. 相似文献

Knowledge of what conservation interventions improve biodiversity outcomes, and in which circumstances, is imperative. Experimental and quasi-experimental methods are increasingly used to establish causal inference and build the evidence base on the effectiveness of interventions, but their ability to provide insight into how and under what conditions an intervention should be implemented to improve biodiversity outcomes faces limitations. A suite of attribution methods that leverage qualitative methods for causal inference is available but underutilized in conversation impact evaluation. This article provides a guide to 5 such qualitative attribution methods: contribution analysis, process tracing, realist evaluation, qualitative comparative analysis, and most significant change. It defines and introduces each method and then illustrates how they could be applied through a case study of community conservancies in Namibia. This guide provides examples of how qualitative attribution methods can advance knowledge of what works, in which contexts, and why in biodiversity conservation. 相似文献
