Bangladesh faces at least 30 upstream water diversion constructions of which Farakka Barrage is the major one. The effects of Farakka Barrage on water resources, socioeconomy, and culture have been investigated downstream in the basins of the Ganges and its distributaries. A diversion of up to 60% of the Ganges water over 25 yr has caused (i) reduction of water in surface water resources, (ii) increased dependence on ground water, (iii) destruction of the breeding and raising grounds for 109 species of Gangetic fishes and other aquatic species and amphibians, (iv) increased malnutrition, (v) deficiency in soil organic matter content, (vi) change in the agricultural practices, (vii) eradication of inland navigable routes, (viii) outbreak of waterborne diseases, (ix) loss of professions, and (x) obstruction to religious observances and pastimes. Further, arsenopyrites buried in the prebarrage water table have come in contact with air and formed water-soluble compounds of arsenic. Inadequate recharging of ground water hinders the natural cleansing of arsenic, and threatens about 75,000,000 lives who are likely to use water contaminated with up to 2 mg/L of arsenic. Furthermore, the depletion of surface water resources has caused environmental heating and cooling effects. Apart from these effects, sudden releases of water by the barrage during the flood season cause devestating floods. In consideration of such a heavy toll for the areas downstream, strict international rules have to be laid down to preserve the riparian ecosystems.  相似文献

The Sound Intensity Prediction System (SIPS) and Blast Operation Overpressure Model (BOOM) are semiempirical sound models that are employed by the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) to predict whether noise levels from the detonation of large missile motors will exceed regulatory thresholds. Field validation of SIPS confirmed that the model was effective in limiting the number of detonations of large missile motors that could potentially result in a regulatory noise exceedance. Although the SIPS accurately predicted the impact of weather on detonation noise propagation, regulators have required that the more conservative BOOM model be employed in conjunction with SIPS in evaluating peak noise levels in populated areas. By simultaneously considering the output of both models, in 2001, UTTR detonated 104 missile motors having net explosive weights (NEW) that ranged between 14,960 and 38,938 lb without a recorded public noise complaint. Based on the encouraging results, the U.S. Department of Defense is considering expanding the application of these noise models to support the detonation of missile motors having a NEW of 81,000 lb. Recent modeling results suggest that, under appropriate weather conditions, missile motors containing up to 96,000 lb NEW can be detonated at the UTTR without exceeding the regulatory noise limit of 134 decibels (dB).  相似文献

Sierra Leone suffered from 11 years of civil war (1991-2002) resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and mutilations together with massive population displacement. In 2001, ARC International, Sierra Leone conducted a baseline survey of 201 commercial sex workers (CSWs) and 202 military respondents on the knowledge, attitudes and practices surrounding HIV/AIDS and STIs in Port Loko, Sierra Leone. In 2003, a comparable post-intervention survey of 202 CSWs and 205 military respondents was performed. Comparison of baseline and post-intervention results showed that HIV/AIDS knowledge increased among both groups, with those able to name three effective means of avoiding AIDS increasing from 5 per cent to 70 per cent among CSWs, and 11 to 75 per cent among the military. Reported condom use during last sex increased among CSWs from 38 to 68 per cent and among military from 39 to 68 per cent. These results demonstrate that, despite the challenges inherent in a post-conflict country, good-quality AIDS-prevention programmes can be effective.  相似文献

Ultraviolet-B radiation is an environmental stress for plants and this situation could become aggravated in the next decades. In this study we used Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) as a model system to test whether an environmental stress derived from global change, such as UVB, can influence the efficacy of control procedures and evolution toward herbicide resistance. We grew three generations of Italian ryegrass plants with and without UVB light and subjected them to a series of diclofop-methyl [(+/-)-2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoic acid, methyl ester] doses. The effect of selection history was tested with herbicide dose response. The effect of herbicide application on plant survival and biomass varied significantly among herbicide doses and with absence or presence of UVB light. In the absence of herbicide, the decrease in individual fecundity with increasing plant density was similar under both no-UVB and UVB light treatments. Only plants growing without UVB light increased production of reproductive structures in response to the decrease in density caused by herbicide application. Our study shows that UVB light was a weak stress factor for the ryegrass plants. However, when herbicide selection pressure was high, UVB light reduced the evolution toward herbicide tolerance. When selection pressure on the parental plants was lower, the two stress factors had a synergistic effect, causing changes in herbicide efficacy that in turn had demographic and evolutionary consequences. In the field, these interactions between stress factors might be of significance for annual weeds in which seed output is a major determinant in fitness.  相似文献

To understand contaminant transport in aquatic systems, it is essential to define the physical characteristics of the primary particulate carriers. The distribution of organic pollutants with particle-size class and particle morphology in a freshwater embayment (Hamilton Harbor, western Lake Ontario) was studied using a sequence of novel sample preparation and characterization techniques. Water samples (24 L) were fractionated according to particle-size distribution using differential cascade sedimentation and centrifugation methods. These size fractions were subsequently subjected to a physicochemical characterization using scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy to identify flocs and individual colloidal particles in the size range of 1 nm to 1 mm in diameter. Analytical chemical analyses were performed to identify organic contaminants in extracts prepared from particle-size classes, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The contaminant distribution trends were very similar for all compound classes studied; contaminants were primarily associated with fractions containing particles less than 2 mum in diameter. Morphological characterization of these fractions showed the majority of the particulates to be humic fractals. The results of this study show that contaminants in aquatic systems can be preferentially associated with specific types of particle carriers, the characteristics of which can be clearly defined in terms of size and morphology.  相似文献

The occurrence of heavy metals in the soil was measured over a period of several years to determine background concentrations in a heavily urbanized watershed in southeastern Michigan. A spatially dispersed sample was collected to capture the inherent variability of the soils and historic land use. The analysis focused on 14 metals (antimony, arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, and zinc) that are part of the USEPA's list of the 129 most common pollutants. Metal concentrations were measured at three depths: near-surface (<0.5 m), shallow subsurface (0.5-10 m), and depths greater than 10 m across six soil units in glacial terrain. Additional analyses assessed the metal concentrations in each depth profile across three general land use categories: residential, commercial, and industrial. Metal concentrations were the highest in the near-surface with Pb present at concentrations averaging 15.5 times that of background in industrial areas and approximately 16 times background in residential areas. Cadmium, Hg, and Zn were also present in surface soils at levels of several times that of background. The highest concentrations of each of these metals were present in the clay-rich soils located in the eastern, more urbanized and industrialized part of the watershed. Metals detected at elevated concentrations decreased in concentration with increasing depth and distance from the urbanized and industrialized center of the watershed. Statistically significant differences in the concentrations of heavy metals were also noted between the land use categories, with Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn observed within industrial areas at mean concentrations several times greater than background levels.  相似文献

Basic yellow 28 (SLY) and Reactive black 5 (CBWB), which are respectively methine and sulfoazo textile dyes were individually exposed to electrochemical treatment using diamond-, aluminium-, copper- and iron-zinc alloy electrodes. The generated current was registered with time during electrolysis of the dye solutions and the color variation and the formation of degradation products were followed using HPLC with diode array detection. Four different electrodic materials were tested by applying different potentials in the range -1.0 to -2.5 V and presented 95% color removal and COD removal of up to 65-67% in the case of CBWB dye solution treated with the copper and iron electrodes. Efficiency was enhanced with stirring and flow in relation to the stationary regime. The kinetic parameter reaction rate was used to establish the effect of flow, potential, electrode nature and pH. The formation and characterization of the precipitate formed under certain conditions is reported and discussed.  相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls including coplanar congeners were measured in the liver of different species of skates and ghostsharks. The mean concentrations of PCBs in skates (314 ng/g wet wt) were comparable with those in ghostsharks (285 ng/g wet wt). The specific analysis of PCB congeners in skates hepatic tissue revealed a profile dominated by hexa-, penta-, and heptachlorinated congeners followed by trichlorobiphenyls, tetra- and decachlorobiphenyls. A different profile dominated by hexa-, tri-, and pentachlorinated congeners, followed by heptachlorobiphenyl and decachlorobiphenyls was found in ghostsharks liver. The estimated 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin toxic equivalents (TEQs) of coplanar PCBs in skates and ghostsharks were 0.48 and 0.33 pg/g wet weight, respectively, with mono-ortho congeners PCB105, 118 and 156 contributing more than 90% to the TEQs.  相似文献

本研究选用J55油套管,用人工缺陷法在外径为73mm的油套管外表面预制了缺陷,通过三点弯曲对称加载试验,研究了缺陷管的抗弯强度,对改进的NSC准则进行实验检验。结果表明,在缺陷角较小时,改进的NSC准则能给出与试验数据接近的预测结果,但对于在缺陷角较大的情形,预测结果却不理想。根据试验结果,本文进一步提出了一个含有缺陷几何参量的新公式。新公式能很好地预测含缺陷管的抗弯曲能力。  相似文献
