This paper reports the results of 12 years of hydrological monitoring at the St. Fergus dune system in northeastern Scotland.
The site is adjacent to the UK’s largest gas terminal and the dunes are crossed in five places by North Sea gas pipelines
which were constructed between 1976 and 1990. These are buried beneath the dune system which was restored after pipeline installation.
The dunes include a substantial freshwater wetland which is seasonally flooded and provides an important habitat for waterfowl.
The hydrogeology of the site is characterized and the hydrogeological processes that sustain this wetland feature are considered

Carbon content and rate of dark respiration was determined on individual Strombidium capitatum (Leegard) Kahl cells uniformly labelled with 14C in culture. Isolated individuals were incubated in sterile medium in the dark for periods of up to 24h, and cumulative respired 14CO2 was retained in an alkaline trap. Cell carbon varied by more than an order of magnitude and followed a bi-modal distribution. Small cells of 2 to 7 ng C cell-1 respired at specific rates of 3 to 5% cell C h-1, whereas large cells of 7 to 25 ng C cell-1 respired at 1 to 2% cell C h-1. Mortality was greater for small cells than for large ones, and was greatest during the first few hours. Small cells accounted for 40% of all cells at initial time, T
0, whereas none of these survived a 16 h incubation. It is proposed that the rates of carbon-specific dark respiration observed for small cells compromise their ability to survive more than a few hours in the dark without food. The combination of influence of size (carbon content) together with differential proportions of small cells resulting from mortality contributed to considerable variance in carbon-specific respiration rates. When smaller and larger modal groups were considered separately, this variance was significantly reduced for both groups. Using this refined data, there was no significant starvation-induced reduction in carbon-specific rates. The mean rate remained at between 1.1 and 1.4% cell C h-1 for large cells over the 24 h period, and between 3.8 and 4.1% cell C h-1 for small cells over the 8 h of their survival. This observation for a planktonic mixotrophic ciliate contrasts with published observations for heterotrophic protists which have reported reduction of carbon-specific respiration rate with starvation. 相似文献

Summary The contribution of Miriam Rothschild to the monarch cardenolide story is reviewed in the light of the 1914 challenge by the evolutionary biologist, E.B. Poulton for North American chemists to explain the chemical basis of unpalatability in monarch butterflies and their milkweed host plants. This challenge had lain unaccepted for nearly 50 years until Miriam Rothschild took up the gauntlet and showed with the help of many able colleagues that monarchs are aposematically coloured because they sequester toxic cardenolides from milkweed host plants for use as a defence against predators. By virtue of Dr Rothschild's inspiration and industry, and subsequently that of Lincoln Brower and his colleagues, this tritrophic interaction has become a familiar paradigm for the evolution of chemical defences and warning colouration. We now know that the cardenolide contents of different milkweeds vary quantitatively, qualitatively and spatially, both within and among species and we are starting to appreciate the implications of such variation. However, as Dr Rothschild has pointed out in her publications, cardenolides have sometimes blinded us to reality and it is curious how little evidence there is for a defensive function to cardenolides in plants — especially against adapted specialists such as the monarch. Thus the review will conclude with a discussion of the significance of temporal variation and induction of cardenolide production in plants, the lethal plant defence paradox and an emphasis on the dynamics of the cardenolide-mediated interaction between milkweeds and monarch larvae. 相似文献

A contaminant transport model was developed to simulate the fate and transport of organic compounds such as TNT (2,4,6-trinitrotoluene), using the single-root system. Onions were planted for this system with 50-ml plastic tubes. Mass in the soil, soil solution, root and leaf was monitored using 14C-TNT. Model parameters were acquired from the experiments in the single-root system and were used to simulate total TNT concentration in soil, providing the average concentrations in the rhizosphere and bulk soil as well as root and leaf compartments. Because the existing RCF (root concentration factor) and TSCF (transpiration stream concentration factor) equations based on logKow (octanol-water partition coefficient) were not correlated to TNT uptake, a new term, root uptake rate (Rur), and a new Tscf equation, based on the experimental data, were introduced in the proposed model. The results from both modeling and experimental studies showed higher concentrations of TNT in the rhizosphere than in the bulk soil, because mass transported from the surrounding soil into the rhizosphere was higher than that by root uptake. 相似文献

Phytoremediation has the potential to enhance clean up of land contaminated by various pollutants. A mathematical model that includes a two-fluid phase flow model of water flow as well as a two-region soil model of contaminant reactions was developed and applied to various bioremediation scenarios in the unsaturated zone, especially to plant-aided bioremediation. To investigate model behavior and determine the main parameters and mechanisms that affect bioremediation in unplanted and planted soils, numerical simulations of theoretical scenarios were conducted before applying the model to field data. It is observed from the results that parameters affecting the contaminant concentration in the water phase, such as aqueous solubility, the octanol-water partition coefficient, and organic carbon content of the soil controlled the contaminant fate in the vadose zone. Simulation using the developed model also characterized the fate and transport of the contaminants both in planted and unplanted soils satisfactorily for field applications. Although phytoremediation has the potential for remediation of contaminated soils, results from both modeling and field studies suggested that plants may not always enhance the remediation efficiency when the soil already has a high microbial concentration, when the contaminant bioavailability is low, or when the overall reaction is mass transfer-limited. Therefore, other steps to increase contaminant bioavailability are needed in phytoremediation applications; natural purification mechanisms such as aging, volatilization, and natural bioremediation should be considered to maximize the plant effect and minimize the cost. 相似文献

The vadose zone is the intermediate medium between the atmosphere and groundwater. The modeling of the processes taking place in the vadose zone needs different approaches to those needed for groundwater transport problems because of the marked changes in environmental conditions affecting the vadose zone. A mathematical model to simulate the water flow, and the fate and transport of recalcitrant contaminants was developed, which could be applied to various bioremediation methods such as phytoremediation and natural attenuation in the vadose zone. Two-phase flow equations and heat flux models were used to develop the model. Surface energy, balance equations were used to estimate soil surface temperature, and root growth and root distribution models were incorporated to represent the special contribution of plant mots in the vegetated soils. Interactions between the roots and environmental conditions such as temperature and water content were treated by incorporating a feedback mechanism that made allowance for the effects of water and temperature stresses on root distribution and water uptake by roots. In conducting the modeling study, Johnson grass and unplanted soil were simulated to compare the effect of root water uptake on soil water content. After the numerical experiments were conducted to investigate model behavior, the proposed model was applied to estimate actual water flow and heat flow in field lysimeter experiments over a 1-year period. Root growth and distribution for Johnson grass and rye grass were simulated to compare the warm season grass to the cold season grass. Magnetic and non-magnetic fractions of coal fly ashes from SE US electric power plants were characterized with special emphasis on the potential environmental consequences of their terrestrial disposal. Quartz and mullite were the crystalline minerals dominating the non-magnetic fractions. Magnetic fractions contained magnetite, hematite, and, to a lesser extent, quartz and mullite. Chemical analyses revealed that magnetic fractions had about 10 times higher concentrations of Fe, and 2-4 times higher concentrations of Co, Ni, and Mn. Non-magnetic fractions were enriched in K, Al and Ca. Iron content within fly ash particles was negatively correlated with elements associated with aluminosilicate matrix (Si, Al, K, Na). Solubility of most elements was higher in the non-magnetic than in the magnetic fractions of alkaline fly ashes at comparable pH. Calcium was associated with the non-magnetic fraction of the alkaline fly ashes which resulted in a higher pH buffering capacity of this fraction. 相似文献

We quantified the stability of nine stream fish assemblages by calculating coefficients of variation of population size for
assemblage members. Coefficients of variation were high and averaged over 96%; indicating that most assemblages were quite
variable. Coefficient of variation (CV) estimates were not significantly affected by: (1) years of study, (2) mean abundance,
(3) familial classification, or (4) mean interval between collections. We also detected minor regional differences in CVs.
The high variability exhibited by many stream fish assemblages suggests that it may be difficult to detect the effects of
anthropogenic disturbances using population data alone. Consequently, we urge managers to exercise caution in the evaluation
of the effects of these disturbances. More long-term studies of the ecological characteristics of undisturbed stream fish
assemblages are needed to provide a benchmark against which disturbed systems can be compared.
We suggest that CVs are a better estimator of population/assemblage stability, than either Kendall's W or the standard deviation
of the logarithms of numerical censuses. This conclusion is based on the following reasons. First, CVs scale population variation
by the mean and, hence, more accurately measure population variability. Second, this scaling permits the comparison of populations
with different mean abundances. Finally, the interpretation of CV values is less ambiguous than either of the aforementioned
