Since the beginning of the 1960s, mass tourism has been the most important menace to the environmental stability of fragile and vulnerable Mediterranean microinsular systems. The socioeconomic changes introduced by tourism have produced important variations in the use of resources, including land. The result usually has been an increase in the level of artificiality of the territory, particularly in coastal areas. The intensity and frequency of change in the use of resources and the induced changes in the level of artificiality may be used as an estimation of environmental stability. The northern area of Formentera, Balearic islands, Spain, being the most environmentally important area of the island and simultaneously the most threatened by mass tourism development, has been chosen as a study case. Forty types of vegetation and land use have been estimated and mapped in the area. The stability level of each land use type has been estimated, before and after the development of tourism, and the main environmental processes have been identified. An attempt is made to predict some future trends and their variations.  相似文献

Numerical simulations with photochemical transport models were independently performed for two domains situated in the Iberian Peninsula covering the Lisbon and Barcelona airsheds. Although the days chosen for simulation of the two cities are not the same, the synoptic situations in both cases, known as typical summertime situations, were similar, which allowed the development of typical mesoscale circulations, such as sea breezes and mountain and valley winds dominated by the Azores anticyclone. Emission inventories for the two areas were developed. The O3 concentrations recorded in both cities have a similar level. Nevertheless, O(x) values in Barcelona are higher than in Lisbon, which may, at a first glance, indicate an apparently more oxidant atmosphere in Barcelona. Photochemical modeling for the two cities has shown that the behavior of the circulatory patterns in both urban areas is rather different, which mainly has to do with the different strengths of the sea breeze and the topography, inducing an important offshore vertical layered dimension of pollutant transport in Barcelona versus an important inland horizontal transport in Lisbon.  相似文献

Two municipal waste incinerators in the vicinity of a residential area close to the city of Antwerp caused concern to local habitants. Risk assessment was performed combining chemical, toxicological measurements and model calculations. As the first step in risk assessment an inventory was made of historic emissions from both incinerators with emphasis on dioxins. The operational atmospheric transport and deposition model for priority substances (OPS) was used to calculate the deposition of dioxins in the vicinity of incinerators. The observed soil contamination pattern did not correspond to the calculated deposition pattern, indicating that other sources may contribute at least partly to the local PCDD/PCDF contamination of the area. Dioxin exposure of people in the Neerlandquarter as a function of the food consumption behavior was calculated using a mathematical model (VLIER-HUMAAN) combined with transfer factors. According to the results of these calculations, just residing in the impact area does not result in a meaningful risk. Only if locally produced food was consumed (milk, meat and vegetables), exposure in the Neerlandquarter was enhanced compared to the average dioxin exposure estimated for the Flemish population. Exposure in 1997 was below the exposure in 1980. As a consequence of different eating habits and lower bodyweight, children are subjected to significantly higher exposure than adults. Adverse health outcomes from dioxin exposure in the past cannot be excluded. There was no evidence for enhanced exposure to genotoxicants based on a comparison of chromosomal damage to blood cells of children from the study area to those from a control group.  相似文献

The investigations of organochlorine compounds in breast milk from women living in the Stockholm region started in 1967. The present study summarises the investigations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), naphthalenes (PCNs), dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and pesticides (DDT, DDE, hexachlorobenzene, dieldrin) as well as methylsulfonyl metabolites of PCBs and DDE in human milk sampled during different periods up to 1997. During the course of 20-30 yr the levels of organochlorine compounds in human milk have decreased to various extent. A decrease to the half of the original concentration was attained in the range of 4-17 yr periods. On the contrary to the organochlorine compounds, the concentrations of PBDEs have increased during the period 1972-1997, indicating a doubling of the levels by 5 yr. The levels reflect the environmental contamination and background levels in the population. The accumulation and ongoing increase in the levels of PBDEs calls for immediate measures to stop the environmental pollution and human exposure to PBDEs.  相似文献

The possibility of using zeolites containing the 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium cation as photocatalysts for the degradation of pollutants has been tested on aqueous xylidine (2,4-dimethylaniline) solutions as models for contaminated wastewaters. The influence of the photocatalyst and substrate concentrations on xylidine oxidation has been investigated in homogeneous solution, by performing a series of experiments chosen according to the experimental design methodology (Doehlert uniform array). The empirical models and the corresponding response surfaces obtained from data analysis have been used for simulating and predicting degradation efficiency. The results have shown that conversion increases with increasing amounts of photocatalyst and decreasing concentration of the model pollutant. The fluorescence of 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium was quenched by xylidine with a rate constant k(q) of 3.1x10(9)M(-1)s(-1). This result suggests a direct electron transfer between the excited pyrylium salt and xylidine. Because of the limited stability of the photocatalyst in homogeneous media, a pyrylium containing Y-zeolite has been tested for the photocatalytic oxidation of xylidine under heterogeneous conditions. The results suggest that the supported catalyst has a much improved stability and that xylidine oxidation rates remain nearly constant during the whole reaction time. An additional advantage of the pyrylium containing zeolite photocatalyst is that it can be recycled and used for further experiments.  相似文献

For the control of the Onchocerca volvulus vector in West Africa, up to 18,000 km of rivers from 1975 and up to 50,000 km from 1989 had been partly sprayed weekly with insecticides as part of the Onchocerciasis Control Programme (OCP). To evaluate the possible short-term and long-term effects of the application of insecticides on the non-target fauna, an aquatic monitoring programme was set up during the initial phase of the programme. By analysing the invertebrate data, which were collected using various sampling strategies from four different countries between 1977 and 1996, this paper evaluates the long-term changes of the invertebrate populations with respect to their taxonomic composition as well as their trophic structures. The discussed results of the applied numerical analysis strategy suggest that neither the taxonomic nor the trophic structures are greatly altered from the range of biological, flow-related variation that normally occurs in the studied river systems. This allows us to conclude that the biological variation found here is ecologically acceptable.  相似文献

In case of an accident at a nuclear power plant with liberation of radioactive material into the atmosphere, knowledge about the behavior of plant species when in contact with radionuclides is indispensable for safety reasons. The leaf-fruit translocation is an important route through which agricultural products are contaminated by radionuclides. To quantify the leaf-fruit translocation factors for 137Cs and 90Sr in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) an experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with a randomized block design. 137Cs activity was determined by gamma-ray spectrometry, while chemical separation followed by beta counting of 90Y was used for 90Sr determination. The model applied for translocation indicated functional dependence between the moment of tracer application and the physiological development of the bean plant. Translocation factors obtained for 137Cs and 90Sr were 0.16 and less than 0.005, respectively.  相似文献

We have isolated and characterised a novel aerobic bacterial strain, designated MS3-02, belonging to the genus Janibacter sp. The capability of this new strain to degrade polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a commercial mixture (Aroclor 1242) in liquid medium and in soil (sterile and non sterile soil), under laboratory scale, has been evaluated. MS3-02 was isolated from the soil around of an incinerator, located in the east of Madrid (Spain). Gas-chromatographic analysis showed that MS3-02 was able to reduce most peaks observed in the chromatogram between 70% and 100% after seven days of incubation in a culture mineral medium containing yeast extract, but without the addition of biphenyl. The presence of biphenyl in the culture medium decreased the rate of PCB degradation by this bacterium. Comparing the performance of the MS3-02 in liquid culture medium and in soil, degradation was less efficient in sterile soil and still less efficient in non sterile soil. Under the best conditions (sterile soil and 20 weeks of incubation) MS3-02 was able to reduce, between 50% and 100%, nine of the main gas-chromatographic peaks in Aroclor 1242.  相似文献

The GLEAMS (Groundwater Loading Effects of Agricultural Management Systems, Version 2.10) model was linked with a Geographical Information System (GIS) to evaluate the risk of nitrate pollution in an area of 230 km2 near Valencia (Spain). Under Mediterranean conditions, GLEAMS was calibrated and validated using results from field experiments on citrus orchards and vegetables grown in that area. A graphical user interface (GUI) was implemented in the GIS-model system to allow a non-specialist to run the model, and to represent simulation results as a thematic map. In order to execute the GLEAMS model, data must be grouped in five basic layers: four layers correspond to the base maps (soils, climate, land use, NO3 content in irrigation water), and the fifth layer corresponds to agricultural management practices, introduced in the system interacting to the GUI. To illustrate system capabilities. two rotations with crops in the vegetable area (potato/lettuce/onion/cauliflower, and artichoke/artichoke in 2 years rotation each), and orange trees in the citrus area, were simulated to determine the N leached in the study area. Pollution risk maps show that vegetable crops and areas irrigated with groundwater have the highest potential risk of groundwater nitrate pollution. Further analysis identified potato and artichoke (in the first year) to be the crops with the higher risk.  相似文献
