Sperm economy and limitation in spiny lobsters 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Sperm limitation, when female fertilisation success is constrained by the supply of sperm, is generally perceived to be an
uncommon feature of reproduction in species which directly transfer gametes during copulation. Male size, previous copulations,
and the balance of expected reproductive return and future mating opportunity may, however, limit the amount of sperm males
transfer to females. We used laboratory experiments where mate size could be manipulated and its consequences on spermatophore
size and clutch size determined, to show that in two genera of spiny lobsters (Crustacea: Palinuridae) male reproductive output
limits the size of clutches brooded by females. In Panulirus argus from the Florida Keys, we show that while male size affects spermatophore area, males also vary the amount of ejaculate positively
with female size. Furthermore, the area of the spermatophore has a greater influence than female size on subsequent clutch
weight. In Jasus edwardsii from New Zealand, female size, male size and mate order all affect clutch weight. In both species, clutches fertilised by
small males in the laboratory are significantly smaller than clutches fertilised by large males. These results suggest that
to ensure they receive sufficient sperm, females should either mate several times prior to oviposition, mate as early as possible
in the reproductive season, or choose large, preferably unmated males as partners and thus compete with other females for
preferred males. Sperm-limited female fecundity has the potential to limit the egg production of fished populations where
large males are typically rare.

Patterns of sex ratio variation and maternal investment reported in the literature are often inconsistent. This could be
due to intra- and inter-specific variation in social systems, but may also be a result of the a posteriori nature of much
of this type of analysis or the testing of models which are inappropriate. Two recent papers reported directly opposed results
concerning variation in offspring sex ratios in relation to maternal condition in roe deer, interpreting the results as support
for the Trivers and Willard model and for the local resource competition hypothesis, respectively. In this paper, we present
data on offspring sex ratios and early juvenile body weight from two long-term studies of this species to test predictions
arising from these two models concerning sex biases in litter composition and maternal care. First, we observed no consistent
pattern of sex differences in an index of weaning weight or body weight at 1 month old in either population, indicating a
lack of sex bias in maternal care. However, in one population, higher maternal body weight was associated with higher juvenile
body weight of daughters, but not of sons. Secondly, we found a negative, but not statistically significant, relationship
between maternal body weight and litter sex ratio such that heavier females tended to produce more daughters and lighter females
to produce more sons. These results indicate that roe females which have additional investment potential available do not
invest it in sons, as predicted by the Trivers and Willard model. Our results may provide some support that roe deer are subject
to local resource competition acting at the level of the individual mother; however, the fact that particular trends in sex
ratio data can be explained in functional terms provides no indication that they are actually adaptive.

A volume of sand containing coal tar creosote was emplaced below the water table at CFB Borden to investigate natural attenuation processes for complex biodegradable mixtures. Coal tar creosote is a mixture of more than 200 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds and phenolic compounds. A representative group of seven compounds was selected for detailed study: phenol, m-xylene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, 1-methylnaphthalene, dibenzofuran and carbazole. Movement of groundwater through the source led to the development of a dissolved organic plume, which was studied over a 4-year period. Qualitative plume observations and mass balance calculations indicated two key conclusions: (1) compounds from the same source can display distinctly different patterns of plume development and (2) mass transformation was a major influence on plume behaviour for all observed compounds. 相似文献

This study examined protégé characteristics that mentors reported were most influential when choosing a protégé. Based on existing research, two variables were identified related to protégé selection: perceptions regarding the protégé's potential/ability and perceptions regarding the protégé's need for help. The relationships of these two factors with perceived barriers to mentoring others, mentor advancement aspirations, and mentor gender were investigated. Data from 282 mentors revealed that mentors were more likely to choose a protégé based on perceptions regarding the protégé's ability/potential than based on perceptions regarding the protégé's need for help. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals call for action to build back better in ways that leave no one behind. At the same time, ensuring a local voice is increasingly central to humanitarian engagement. These aims contrast with limited analysis of how local actors might be supported in these respects during response and recovery, and how far recommendations are specific or generalisable across richer and poorer national contexts. The paper begins by comparing lessons learnt by survivors and community organisations in Sint Maarten, Dutch Caribbean, following a high‐income state‐led response to Hurricane Irma in 2017 with the priorities of lower income, humanitarian‐led endeavours. The differences reveal the importance of economic resources as the basis for individual self‐reliance and a fragmented civil society with limited leadership ambitions in Sint Maarten. Strong cross‐cultural alignment nevertheless allows for a globally‐relevant and yet contextually‐sensitive framework for survivor‐led action and reconstruction. 相似文献

Although the literature on employee involvement suggests that some organizations experience significant benefits to employee attitudes and productivity, the results from individual studies vary widely. This study focuses on those factors that may mediate the success or failure of employee involvement practices, especially the role played by middle managers. A postal survey of 155 organizations examined the perceived outcomes of different employee involvement practices and the support or resistance attributed to middle managers. Hypothesized correlates of middle management resistance to employee involvement were examined. As hypothesized, positive outcomes of employee involvement were lower in organizations that experienced middle management resistance. The study supports the view that middle managers may resist employee involvement practices in response to threats to self interest (managerial job loss and delayering). However, lack of congruence between organizational systems and structures and the goals of EI and divided or unclear senior management support for EI were also found to be strongly related to middle management resistance. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

This research examines the willingness of employees to follow their organization when the entire business unit is geographically relocating. The site for the study was a large government defense agency moving from a major U.S. northeastern metropolitan area to a rural area south of Washington, D.C. The study participants were 380 employees who were deciding within the next 6 months if they would relocate, too. Attachment to the present community, attachment to the current organization, and availability of job market alternatives are the factors most significantly associated with willingness to move during corporate relocation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

This study tested the proposition that relationships among the various types of work-related commitment and job performance are affected by both the form of commitment and the facet of performance under consideration. Results provided some support for this view. As hypothesized, job involvement was related only to performance tied to intrinsically rewarding elements of work, and career commitment was positively related to overall performance effectiveness. Unexpectedly, however, organizational commitment (both affective and continuance) was unrelated to job performance.
