The identity of compounds responsible for estrogenic and dioxin-like activities in sediment from the harbour of the small town Zierikzee in Zeeland, The Netherlands, was investigated using a bioassay directed fractionation approach with the in vitro estrogen and dioxin responsive reporter gene assays ER- and DR-CALUX. For identification of compounds exhibiting activity in the bioassays, either one or two-dimensional GC in combination with quadrupole (MSD), ion trap (ITD) or time-of-flight mass spectrometric detection (ToF-MS) was used, depending on the biological and chemical characteristics and the complexity of the fractions. The natural estrogenic hormone 17-β-estradiol and its metabolite estrone were identified with GC–ITD as the main contributors to the estrogenic activity. After successive rounds of fractionation, the dioxin-like activity could be explained by the presence of various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons identified with GC–MSD and two-dimensional comprehensive GC × GC–ToF-MS. Some estrogenic activity of a relatively non-polar nature remained unidentified. 相似文献

Recent work has identified a worldwide "economic" spectrum of correlated leaf traits that affects global patterns of nutrient cycling and primary productivity and that is used to calibrate vegetation-climate models. The correlation patterns are displayed by species from the arctic to the tropics and are largely independent of growth form or phylogeny. This generality suggests that unidentified fundamental constraints control the return of photosynthates on investments of nutrients and dry mass in leaves. Using novel graph theoretic methods and structural equation modeling, we show that the relationships among these variables can best be explained by assuming (1) a necessary trade-off between allocation to structural tissues versus liquid phase processes and (2) an evolutionary tradeoff between leaf photosynthetic rates, construction costs, and leaf longevity. 相似文献

In many temperate regions, fuel and oil spills are sometimes managed simply by allowing natural degradation to occur, while monitoring soils and groundwater to ensure that there is no off-site migration or on-site impact. To critically assess whether this approach is suitable for coastal Antarctic sites, we investigated the extent of evaporation and biodegradation at three old fuel spills at Casey Station. Where the contaminants migrated across frozen ground, probably beneath snow, approximately half the fuel evaporated in the first few months prior to infiltration at the beginning of summer. Once in the ground, however, evaporation rates were negligible. In contrast, minor spills from fuel drums buried in an abandoned waste disposal site did not evaporate to the same extent. Biodegradation within all three spill sites is generally very minor. We conclude that natural attenuation is not a suitable management strategy for fuel-contaminated soils in Antarctic coastal regions. 相似文献

This study compared the sorption of Ag, Cd, Co, Cd, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn by a Ca-treated Sargassum biomass at pH 5.0, under low and high ionic strength (IS) conditions. The sorption isotherms of As [As(V)] and Cr [Cr(III) and Cr(VI)] were also determined at low IS. The isotherm data for the eight cationic metals and Cr(III) were well fitted by Langmuir equations. Generally, the maximum metal uptake (Umax) followed: Cr(III) > Pb approximately Cu > Ag approximately Zn approximately Cd > Ni approximately Mn approximately Co > Cr(VI) > As(V) at low IS and Pb > Cu > Co > Mn approximately Cd > Zn approximately Ag > Ni at high IS. As(V) did not bind to the seaweed at pH 5.0. The results indicated that sorption of Pb was not affected by the increasing IS, though the percentage of free Pb ions in the water was greatly reduced as predicted by the speciation model. High IS lowered Umax by 10-36% (except Co and Pb), and lowered the affinity constant of the metal by 33-91% for all cationic metals, as compared to low IS. Moreover, the removal efficiency of the cationic metals and Cr decreased exponentially with initial metal concentrations and was lower at high IS. Ion-exchange was the mechanism responsible for the cationic metal sorption onto the seaweed, and Na ion interfered with the cationic metal binding through electrostatic interaction. In conclusion, this study showed the differential binding capacity of the Sargassm biomass for different metals and oxidation states and the differential effects of IS. According to the present results, Sargassum may be considered a good biosorbent for cationic metals (especially Pb) in both low and high-salt containing wastewater. 相似文献

The retardation of radionuclides and other contaminants in fractured crystalline rock is strongly associated with the diffusive properties of the rock matrix. At present, the scientific community is divided concerning the question of long-range pore connectivity in intrusive igneous rock. This paper presents a fast new method, called the through-electromigration method, of obtaining formation factors and investigating pore connectivity. The method involves the migration of an ionic tracer through a rock sample with an electrical potential gradient as the main driving force. The method is analogous to the through-diffusion method but the experimental time is reduced by orders of magnitude. This enables investigations of pore connectivity, as measurements can be made on longer samples. In a preliminary investigation, the new method is compared to the traditional through-diffusion method as well as to rock resistivity methods. The diffusive properties of nine granitic rock samples from Laxemar in Sweden, ranging from 15 to 121 mm in length, have been investigated and the results are compared. 相似文献

Buruli ulcer (BU), an often-deforming skin ulceration caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans (MU), is now considered by the World Health Organization to be the third most common mycobacterium infection. However, the reservoir of MU in the environment and the epidemiology of BU are poorly understood. The disease is prevalent in riverine, slow-flowing and swampy areas of several tropical and subtropical regions of the world, especially in West Africa where the disease is rapidly increasing in incidence. This paper presents a review of published literature concerning epidemiology of, transmission and susceptibility to MU infection. A global monitoring system for atmospheric xenon radioactivity is being established as part of the International Monitoring System to verify compliance with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The isotopic activity ratios of (135)Xe, (133m)Xe, (133)Xe and (131m)Xe are of interest for distinguishing nuclear explosion sources from civilian releases. Simulations of light water reactor (LWR) fuel burn-up through three operational reactor power cycles are conducted to explore the possible xenon isotopic signature of nuclear reactor releases under different operational conditions. It is studied how ratio changes are related to various parameters including the neutron flux, uranium enrichment and fuel burn-up. Further, the impact of diffusion and mixing on the isotopic activity ratio variability are explored. The simulations are validated with reported reactor emissions. In addition, activity ratios are calculated for xenon isotopes released from nuclear explosions and these are compared to the reactor ratios in order to determine whether the discrimination of explosion releases from reactor effluents is possible based on isotopic activity ratios. 相似文献

Anthropogenic factors associated with damming and water abstraction, and the resultant environmental pressures, are reviewed
in six African river catchments using records and forecasts of climatic, demographic, and land-use change. Changes in the
states of the flow regime through catchment drainage systems to the coastal sea are considered in conjunction with climate
change and other human-induced pressures. The impacts of these changes on downstream and coastal environments and their communities
are described in past, present, and future perspectives. Linkages between the issues and the pressures of damming and water
abstraction are appraised and scientific, policy, and management responses proposed aimed at remedying existing and perceived
future negative impacts. The study proposes that there is a need to integrate catchment and coastal management to account
for the whole water flow regime together with its human dimensions. Management priorities relating to the operation of existing
damming and abstraction schemes and planning of future schemes include the following: consideration of ways in which water
discharges could be adjusted to provide improvements in downstream and coastal environmental and socioeconomic conditions;
addressing the problem of sediment trapping impacting on the sustainability of dam reservoirs; and assessment of downstream
and coastal impacts of future schemes in the light of climate change forecasts. 相似文献
