Aquatic endotherms living in polar regions are faced with a multitude of challenges, including low air and water temperatures and low illumination, especially in winter. Like other endotherms from cold environments, Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) living in Arctic waters were hypothesized to respond to these challenges through a combination of high daily rate of energy expenditure (DEE) and high food requirements, which are met by a high rate of catch per unit effort (CPUE). CPUE has previously been shown in Great Cormorants to be the highest of any diving bird. In the present study, we tested this hypothesis by making the first measurements of DEE and foraging activity of Arctic-dwelling Great Cormorants throughout the annual cycle. We demonstrate that, in fact, Great Cormorants have surprisingly low rates of DEE. This low DEE is attributed primarily to very low levels of foraging activity, particularly during winter, when the cormorants spent only 2% of their day submerged. Such a low level of foraging activity can only be sustained through consistently high foraging performance. We demonstrate that Great Cormorants have one of the highest recorded CPUEs for a diving predator; 18.6 g per minute submerged (95% prediction interval 13.0-24.2 g/min) during winter. Temporal variation in CPUE was investigated, and highest CPUE was associated with long days and shallow diving depths. The effect of day length is attributed to seasonal variation in prey abundance. Shallow diving leads to high CPUE because less time is spent swimming between the surface and the benthic zone where foraging occurs. Our study demonstrates the importance of obtaining accurate measurements of physiology and behavior from free-living animals when attempting to understand their ecology. 相似文献

Non-motile organisms of intertidal shores such as seaweeds have to cope with a great variability of environmental factors.
In this survey, we studied whether different morphotypes of the intertidal seaweed Fucus spiralis L. are also reflected in a characteristic performance. Desiccation and recovery of this Phaeophyceae were investigated in
field experiments near Aljezur, Portugal. Fucus spiralis is exposed to serious desiccation during periods of falling tide, resulting in a tissue water loss of about 90%. Due to large
semidiurnal tidal ranges in this area, two morphotypes can be distinguished: F. spiralis growing in the lower intertidal (LZ) is thicker and fleshier compared with plants in the upper intertidal (HZ), and this
is reflected in a significant difference in fresh and dry mass. During sunny days and at low tide, effective quantum yields
(ΦPSII) decreased significantly after 2 h desiccation. This continued until re-submersion. The photosynthetic performances of HZ
and LZ plants also differed significantly after LZ plants were already submerged and photosynthetisizing, but the HZ specimens
still exposed to air. Recovery experiments after desiccation treatments showed fast recovery within 6 min after re-submersion
in both morphotypes. HZ specimens showed a slower recovery, which indicates a protection measure to the adverse conditions
in the upper intertidal. In 24 h desiccation treatments, however, HZ specimens expressed a significantly higher maximum fluorescence
yield F

recovery. Simulated rainfalls during low tides caused photosynthetic activity to drop to 50% of initial F

A comparison of single fronds and tufts clearly indicated advantages of the tuft growth strategy: tufts showed higher ΦPSII at prolonged emersion times. Our study indicated a clear relationship between size and drought resistance, which was primarily

Although herbivorous fish form critical linkages between primary producers and higher trophic levels, the major factors regulating
their spatial structure in seagrass systems remain poorly understood. The present study examined the parrotfish Leptoscarus vaigiensis in seagrass meadows of a tropical embayment in the western Indian Ocean. Stomach content analysis and direct field observations
showed that L. vaigiensis is an efficient grazer, feeding almost exclusively on seagrass leaves. Seagrass shoot density was highly correlated to all
density variables (total, juvenile and subadult) and juvenile biomass of L. vaigiensis, while subadult biomass was predicted by distance to neighbouring coral habitat. Moreover, density and biomass of predatory
fish (piscivores) were predicted by seagrass canopy height and the distribution patterns of predators followed those of L. vaigiensis. Hence, factors at local (seagrass structural complexity and feeding mode) and landscape scale levels (seascape context and
distribution of piscivores) likely mutually structure herbivorous fish communities. The findings underscore the importance

Differences in stress tolerance and reproductive traits may drive the competitive hierarchy between non-indigenous and indigenous species and turn the former ones into successful invaders. In the northern Baltic Sea, the non-indigenous Gammarus tigrinus is a recent invader of littoral ecosystems and now occupies comparable ecological niches as the indigenous G. zaddachi. In laboratory experiments on specimens collected between June and August 2009 around Tvärminne in southern Finland (59°50′N/23°15′E), the tolerances towards heat stress and hypoxia were determined for the two species using lethal time, LT50, as response variable. The brood size of the two species was also studied and some observations were made on maturation of juveniles. Gammarus tigrinus was more resistant to hypoxia and survived at higher temperatures than G. zaddachi. Brood size was also greater in G. tigrinus than in G. zaddachi and G. tigrinus matured at a smaller size and earlier than G. zaddachi. Hence, there are clear competitive advantages for the non-indigenous G. tigrinus compared to the indigenous G. zaddachi, and these may be further strengthened through ongoing environmental changes related to increased eutrophication and a warming climate in the Baltic Sea region. 相似文献

Several ecologically and commercially important fish species spend the winter in a state of minimum feeding activity and at
lower risk of predation. To enable this overwintering behaviour, energetic reserves are generated prior to winter to support
winter metabolism. Maintenance metabolism in fish scales with body size and increases with temperature, and the two factors
together determine a critical threshold size for passive overwintering below which the organism is unlikely to survive without
feeding. This is because the energetic cost of metabolism exceeds maximum energy reserves. In the present study, we estimated
the energetic cost of overwintering from a bioenergetic model. The model was parameterised using respirometry-based measurements
of standard metabolic rate in buried A. tobianus (a close relative to A. marinus) at temperatures from 5.3 to 18.3°C and validated with two independent long-term overwintering experiments. Maximum attainable
energy reserves were estimated from published data on A. marinus in the North Sea. The critical threshold size in terms of length (L
th) for A. marinus in the North Sea was estimated to be 9.5 cm. We then investigated two general predictions: (1) Fish smaller than L
th display winter feeding activity, and (2) size at maturation of iteroparous species is larger than L
th to ensure sufficient energy reserves to accommodate both the metabolic cost of passive overwintering and reproductive investments.
Both predictions were found to be consistent with data on size at maturation and total body energy in December and February. 相似文献

This study compares water quality parameters, shrimp growth and mortality rates, and biomass at harvest in two ponds of equal size, seeded with the same density (7 m2) of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) and Monodon Baculo Virus (MBV) negative post-larvae (PL)-20 of shrimp, Penaeus monodon in the Vellar estuary of South India. The primary difference between the ponds was the water source; one was filled from the estuary and the second with water from bore wells with high alkalinity. Temperature in both ponds was similar and reached 320C after 185 days of culture. Dissolved oxygen (DO) levels were within the acceptable range although levels in the alkaline pond were near the lower limit for the last 90 days before harvest. Salinity levels were similar in both ponds, above optimal levels, and increased over the 185 days. Alkalinity in the estuarine water was typically <50 ppm and again 200-320 ppm in the alkaline pond. In the alkaline pond, beginning on the 75th day mineral deposits was observed covering all parts of the shrimp including the eye and the inner gill chambers, and by harvest, 42% of the shrimp showed this coating. Elemental analysis identified the major constituents as calcium, phosphorus and manganese. Survival rates in the estuarine-water-fed pond was 92% with a total pond biomass at harvest of 1.65 tons ha-1 compared to survival of 79% in the alkaline pond and a biomass at harvest of 1.020 tons ha-1. When well water must be used, its alkalinity should be monitored and diluted with water from other sources. 相似文献

Understanding departure decisions of migratory birds and the environmental factors affecting them is important for predicting
their distribution, abundance, and arrival times to breeding and wintering areas. In the past, methodological difficulties
to obtain fine-scale bird departure and meteorological data have limited testing the multi-scale effects of meteorology on
bird departure during migration. We investigated departure timing of European bee-eaters (Merops apiaster) staging in southern Israel, identified their departure flight mode (flapping or soaring) using radio telemetry, and measured
local meteorological conditions to study if bird departure was affected by these. Departure timing was examined using a timescale
analysis design. The conditions before, during, and after the time of departure were compared using timescales of 24 h, 6 h,
1 h, and 10 min and in relation to bird flight mode. At the between-days timescale, barometric pressure at departure time
was significantly lower compared with 2–1 day earlier, whereas temperature at departure was significantly higher compared
with 3–2 days earlier. Temperature at departure was also higher compared with 6 h and 3–2 h earlier. Tailwind assistance had
no significant effect at any timescale. Soaring birds departed at significantly higher temperature compared with flapping
birds. We suggest that bee-eater departure is tuned to the infrequent passage of warm atmospheric depressions at the between-days
timescale and with an increasing temperature trend within these days enabling the birds to use energetically cheap soaring
flight. We thus suggest that energetic considerations dictate the departure decisions of migrating European bee-eaters. 相似文献

Ecosystem services and urban heat riskscape moderation: water, green spaces, and social inequality in Phoenix, USA 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Urban ecosystems are subjected to high temperatures--extreme heat events, chronically hot weather, or both-through interactions between local and global climate processes. Urban vegetation may provide a cooling ecosystem service, although many knowledge gaps exist in the biophysical and social dynamics of using this service to reduce climate extremes. To better understand patterns of urban vegetated cooling, the potential water requirements to supply these services, and differential access to these services between residential neighborhoods, we evaluated three decades (1970-2000) of land surface characteristics and residential segregation by income in the Phoenix, Arizona, USA metropolitan region. We developed an ecosystem service trade-offs approach to assess the urban heat riskscape, defined as the spatial variation in risk exposure and potential human vulnerability to extreme heat. In this region, vegetation provided nearly a 25 degrees C surface cooling compared to bare soil on low-humidity summer days; the magnitude of this service was strongly coupled to air temperature and vapor pressure deficits. To estimate the water loss associated with land-surface cooling, we applied a surface energy balance model. Our initial estimates suggest 2.7 mm/d of water may be used in supplying cooling ecosystem services in the Phoenix region on a summer day. The availability and corresponding resource use requirements of these ecosystem services had a strongly positive relationship with neighborhood income in the year 2000. However, economic stratification in access to services is a recent development: no vegetation-income relationship was observed in 1970, and a clear trend of increasing correlation was evident through 2000. To alleviate neighborhood inequality in risks from extreme heat through increased vegetation and evaporative cooling, large increases in regional water use would be required. Together, these results suggest the need for a systems evaluation of the benefits, costs, spatial structure, and temporal trajectory for the use of ecosystem services to moderate climate extremes. Increasing vegetation is one strategy for moderating regional climate changes in urban areas and simultaneously providing multiple ecosystem services. However, vegetation has economic, water, and social equity implications that vary dramatically across neighborhoods and need to be managed through informed environmental policies. 相似文献

In Melipona quadrifasciata, about 10 % of the females develop into queens, almost all of which are killed. Occasionally, a new queen replaces or supersedes the mother queen or heads a new colony. We investigated virgin queen fate in queenright and queenless colonies to determine the effects of queen behaviour, body mass, nestmate or non-nestmate status, queenright or queenless colony status, and, when queenless, the effect of the time a colony had been queenless, on survival duration and acceptance. None of 220 virgin queens observed in four observation hives ever attacked another virgin queen nor did any of 88 virgin queens introduced into queenright colonies ever attack the resident queen. A new queen was only accepted in a queenless colony. Factors increasing survival duration and acceptance of virgin queens were to emerge from its cell at 2 h of queenlessness, to hide, and to avoid fights with workers. In this way, a virgin queen was more likely to be available when a colony chooses a new queen, 24-48 h after resident queen removal. Running, walking or resting, antennating or trophallaxis, played little or no role, as did the factors body mass or nestmate. “Queen choice” took about 2 h during which time other virgin queens were still being killed by workers. During this agitated process, the bees congregated around the new queen. She inflated her abdomen and some of the workers deposited a substance on internal nest surfaces including the glass lid of the observation hive. 相似文献

Patterns of pigmentation overlying the petal vasculature are common in flowering plants and have been postulated to play a role in pollinator attraction. Previous studies report that such venation patterning is significantly more attractive to bee foragers in the field than ivory or white flowers without veins. To dissect the ways in which venation patterning of pigment can influence bumblebee behaviour, we investigated the response of flower-naïve individuals of Bombus terrestris to veined, ivory and red near-isogenic lines of Antirrhinum majus. We find that red venation shifts flower colour slightly, although the ivory background is the dominant colour. Bees were readily able to discriminate between ivory and veined flowers under differential conditioning but showed no innate preference when presented with a free choice of rewarding ivory and veined flowers. In contrast, both ivory and veined flowers were selected significantly more often than were red flowers. We conclude that advantages conferred by venation patterning might stem from bees learning of their use as nectar guides, rather than from any innate preference for striped flowers. 相似文献
