Objective: Distracted driving is a known contributor to traffic accidents, and many states have banned texting while driving. However, little is known about the potential accident risk of other common activities while driving, such as eating. The objective of the current study was to examine the adverse impact of eating/drinking behavior relative to texting and nondistracted behaviors on a simulated driving task. Methods: A total of 186 participants were recruited from undergraduate psychology courses over 2 semesters at Kent State University. We utilized the Kent Multidimensional Assessment Driving Simulation (K-MADS) to compare simulated driving performance among participants randomly assigned to texting (N = 45), eating (N = 45), and control (N = 96) conditions. Multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) were conducted to examine between-group differences on simulated driving indices. Results: MANOVA analyses indicated that groups differed in simulated driving performance, F(14, 366) = 7.70, P < .001. Both texting and eating produced impaired driving performance relative to controls, though these behaviors had approximately equal effect. Specifically, both texting and eating groups had more collisions, pedestrian strikes, and center line crossings than controls. In addition, the texting group had more road edge excursions than either eating or control participants and the eating group missed more stop signs than controls. Conclusions: These findings suggest that both texting and eating are associated with poorer simulated driving performance. Future work is needed to determine whether these findings generalize to real-world driving and the development of strategies to reduce distracted driving.  相似文献

Significant microbial reductive dechlorination of [1,2 14C] cis‐dichloroethene (DCE) was observed in anoxic microcosms prepared with unamended, fractured rock aquifer materials, which were colonized in situ at multiple depths in two boreholes at the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC) in West Trenton, New Jersey. The lack of significant reductive dechlorination in corresponding water‐only treatments indicated that chlororespiration activity in unamended, fractured rock treatments was primarily associated with colonized core material. In these unamended fractured rock microcosms, activity was highest in the shallow zones and generally decreased with increasing depth. Electron‐donor amendment (biostimulation) enhanced chlororespiration in some but not all treatments. In contrast, combining electron‐donor amendment with KB1 amendment (bioaugmentation) enhanced chlororespiration in all treatments and substantially reduced the variability in chlororespiration activity both within and between treatments. These results indicate (1) that a potential for chlororespiration‐based bioremediation exists at NAWC Trenton but is limited under nonengineered conditions, (2) that the limitation on chlororespiration activity is not entirely due to electron‐donor availability, and (3) that a bioaugmentation approach can substantially enhance in situ bioremediation if the requisite amendments can be adequately distributed throughout the fractured rock matrix. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.*  相似文献

A one hectare pond on the headwaters of a mercury-contaminated creek in Oak Ridge, Tennessee acted as a biochemical reactor for the production of methylmercury, increasing waterborne methylmercury concentrations in the stream below the pond discharge. The flow of the creek was diverted around the pond in order to eliminate this input. Waterborne total mercury, methylmercury, and mercury in fish, were monitored in the pond and stream before and after bypass. Waterborne methylmercury concentration in the creek downstream from the pond decreased over 800% following diversion of streamflow around the pond, but mercury in redbreast sunfish in the pond tailwater did not decline similarly. Within the pond, now isolated from fresh waterborne mercury inputs from the stream, methylmercury concentrations in the water column remained similar to levels present before bypass. However, mercury concentrations in sunfish in the pond decreased approximately 75% following bypass, despite the continued presence of highly contaminated sediments (approximately 50 mg Hg/kg dry weight). We concluded that a decrease in the fraction of 'dissolved methylmercury' in the isolated pond relative to pre-bypass conditions explained the decrease in mercury in fish within the pond. That observation also indicates that mercury associated with pond sediments was relatively unavailable for eventual bioaccumulation when compared to 'fresh' mercury contributed by upstream sources. The lack of a post-bypass decrease in mercury concentrations in tailwater fish was also likely to be associated with the particle-associated nature of waterborne methylmercury exported from the pond.  相似文献

Careful design studies and selection of an effective technique for the installation of permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) are important contributors to the overall success of zero‐valent iron PRBs. This article provides a case study summarizing the successful design and construction of a PRB installed at the former Carswell Air Force Base located in Fort Worth, Texas. Expedited site characterization using a cone penetrometer rig equipped with a mass spectrometer was employed to provide real‐time characterization and lithologic data. These data proved to be invaluable for the design of the PRB and allowed for the development of an accurate preconstruction cost estimate. Field data gained from the expedited water quality and geologic characterization along with aquifer testing and a bench‐scale treatability study provided a comprehensive basis for the design. The biopolymer slurry construction technique provided additional unanticipated benefits to the designed zero‐ valent iron treatment by promoting the development of anaerobic conditions favorable for microbial degradation of trichloroethene. Postconstruction monitoring data are discussed to illustrate the successful performance of the PRB. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Both color infrared aerial photography and Landsat data are being used to provide information to meet present and future management goals for the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. High and low altitude color infrared photographs are being used to study the hydrology and map the present vegetation of the swamp. A variety of significant ecologic units have been identified using these photographs. The completed maps will be used to evaluate analyses of landsat digital data. Once the present data base is compiled, it is hoped that routine analysis of Landsat data can be used for updating or to indicate areas where low altitude coverage or ground checking is desirable. The data base will also aid in identifying and evaluating trends that may provide guidelines for wetland management.  相似文献

Chromium has become an important soil contaminant at many sites, and facilitating in situ reduction of toxic Cr(VI) to nontoxic Cr(III) is becoming an attractive remediation strategy. Acceleration of Cr(VI) reduction in soils by addition of organic carbon was tested in columns pretreated with solutions containing 1000 and 10 000 mg L(-1) Cr(VI) to evaluate potential in situ remediation of highly contaminated soils. Solutions containing 0,800, or 4000 mg L(-1) organic carbon in the form of tryptic soy broth or lactate were diffused into the Cr(VI)-contaminated soils. Changes in Cr oxidation state were monitored through periodic micro-XANES analyses of soil columns. Effective first-order reduction rate constants ranged from 1.4 x 10(-8) to 1.5 x 10(-7) s(-1), with higher values obtained for lower levels of initial Cr(VI) and higher levels of organic carbon. Comparisons with sterile soils showed that microbially dependent processes were largely responsible for Cr(VI) reduction, except in the soils initially exposed to 10 000 mg L(-1) Cr(VI) solutions that receive little (800 mg L(-1)) or no organic carbon. However, the microbial populations (< or = 2.1 x 10(5) g(-1)) in the viable soils are probably too low for direct enzymatic Cr(VI) reduction to be important. Thus, synergistic effects sustained in whole soil systems may have accounted for most of the observed reduction. These results show that acceleration of in situ Cr(VI) reduction with addition of organic carbon is possible in even heavily contaminated soils and suggest that microbially dependent reduction pathways can be dominant.  相似文献

Biogeochemical transformations of redox-sensitive chemicals in soils can be strongly transport-controlled and localized. This was tested through experiments on chromium diffusion and reduction in soil aggregates that were exposed to chromate solutions. Reduction of soluble Cr(VI) to insoluble Cr(II) occurred only within the surface layer of aggregates with higher available organic carbon and higher microbial respiration. Sharply terminated Cr diffusion fronts develop when the reduction rate increases rapidly with depth. The final state of such aggregates consists of a Cr-contaminated exterior, and an uncontaminated core, each having different microbial community compositions and activity. Microbial activity was significantly higher in the more reducing soils, while total microbial biomass was similar in all of the soils. The small fraction of Cr(VI) remaining unreduced resides along external surfaces of aggregates, leaving it potentially available to future transport down the soil profile. Using the Thiele modulus, Cr(VI) reduction in soil aggregates is shown to be diffusion rate- and reaction rate-limited in anaerobic and aerobic aggregates, respectively. Thus, spatially resolved chemical and microbiological measurements are necessary within anaerobic soil aggregates to characterize and predict the fate of Cr contamination. Typical methods of soil sampling and analyses that average over redox gradients within aggregates can erase important biogeochemical spatial relations necessary for understanding these environments.  相似文献
