An urban diffusion model, which does not require the use of an electronic computer, is presented. The main simplifying assumptions are that continuous pollutant sources are uniformly distributed over the urban area and vertical diffusion occurs until the effluent from each line source reaches the top of the mixing layer, after which the effluent is uniformly distributed through the mixing layer. After the appropriate vertical diffusion coefficient is specified, the calculated concentration is a function of source strength, linear dimension of the metropolis, mixing depth, and wind speed. The calculated concentration is interpreted either as a representative maximum concentration or, through integration, as the average concentration over the metropolitan area. When a representative pollutant concentration is known, the model may be used to determine the apparent “uniform” source strength.  相似文献

The importance of fuels combustion was brought into sharp focus recently in a report on air pollution to the United States Senate in which it was stated, “These processes replace usable air with potentially harmful pollutants, and the capability of the atmosphere to disperse and dilute these pollutants—especially in urban areas where people, vehicles, and industries congregate in even greater numbers—is strictly limited.”1 The overwhelming burden of emissions of sulfur compounds, as well as nitrogen compounds and particulate matter in the U. S. today, originates from the burning of coal and fuel oil in stationary combustion sources. Thus, combustion has a large influence on the quality of the atmosphere in most urban areas. The air pollution effects of these contaminants are many and varied and all are objectionable and undesirable. Without a doubt, the most serious air pollution problem in the nation today is that created by the combustion of fossil fuels.  相似文献

This paper is directed to those concerned with the air environment and its degradation by the burden of pollution from jet aircraft operations. A summary is presented of the results of a comprehensive air pollution study of jet aircraft operations at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Included in the data obtained from this study are jet engine exhaust measurements for currently used turboprop, turbojet and turbofan engines; measurements of specific contaminants in the atmosphere inside and outside of passenger terminals and ticketing areas, and in aircraft cabins during ground operations including passenger loading and taxiing prior to takeoff; also presented are ambient air measurements in a two-mile radius of the airport. An evaluation is made of the emissions of contaminants from air transport operations and all related ground activities including motor vehicles, that contribute to the total atmospheric contaminant burden at the airport.  相似文献

Measurements conducted on full-scale hazardous waste incinerators have occasionally shown a relationship between carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and emissions of toxic organic compounds. In this study, four mixtures of chlorinated C1 and C2 hydrocarbons were diluted in commercial-grade heptane and burned in a water-cooled turbulent flame reactor (TFR) under two different excess air levels. No correlation between CO and organic emissions could be discerned. Reasons for this lack of observable correlations are discussed in terms of combustion and chemical reaction kinetic theory.  相似文献

There are doubts concerning the sources of the pollutant ozone in an urban location. Current control regulations,1 for example, are based on local sources. Many studies suggest that plumes of pollutants released by upwind areas are the cause. For example, New York City has been associated with high O3 in New England,2 Chicago with O3 in Milwaukee,3 and St. Louis with O3 in rural Illinois.4 Others5,6 have suggested the problem must be treated on a synoptic scale. In an effort to understand the problem at Indianapolis better, a series of experiments involving aircraft flights were conducted in the Indianapolis area and their results are herein reported. Specifically, a cross country flight of over 100 mi both to the northeast and southwest of Indianapolis, a vertical spiral to 28,000 ft, low level data associated with takeoff and landing of the aircraft, and ground data at four sites, are available for the afternoon of June 9,1976.  相似文献

A new real-time dust mass monitor has been developed by combining an automatic isokinetic sampling probe with a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM). Fly ash from a room temperature wind tunnel is sampled through the isokinetic sampler and collected on an astroquartz mat filter in the TEOM detector. The filter is first excited and oscillated at low frequency (about 200 Hz). As the particles deposit on the filter, the mass increase of the filter is reflected in a frequency reduction which yields the collected particle mass directly in real time. The TEOM detector normally has a high mass resolution (10?9 g) and wide dynamic range (1055–1066). It is desensitized for high particle loading applications. Good agreement has been obtained between the mass collected through the isokinetic sampling system and the weight loss of the dust feeder, in real time. The body of information presented in this paper is directed to those concerned with particle emission and control in fossil fuel combustion systems.  相似文献

Published results of four field experiments testing effects of acidic precipitation in field-grown soybeans have led to contradictory conclusions. This paper examines the experimental procedures and protocols of the four experiments which could have contributed to differences in both the reported crop yields and the interpretations or conclusions drawn from the experiments.

The most important difference among the experiments is in their statistical designs. Two of the field layouts used only one plot per treatment, providing replication only for plants, rows or sectors within plots, but not among plots. By using real data from a highly replicated experiment it is shown that with such deficient statistical designs treatment effects cannot be separated from other microenvironmental variables peculiar to a specific plot location.

The other two experiments were highly replicated. They were designed to detect differences of approximately 10% among treatment means. Type 1 error, a, was predetermined, and replication was sufficient to keep type 2 error low. This design was made possible because a preliminary experiment was available to estimate the expected components of variance. Despite differences in the procedures and protocols among the four experiments, it is primarily the quality of the experimental design which has determined their validity and relative utility for crop loss assessment.  相似文献

From March 23rd to 26th, 1987, the city of New Orleans hosted 350 attendees, including representatives from 15 foreign countries, at the 1987 Joint Symposium on Stationary Combustion NOx Control. Cosponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the symposium provided attendees the opportunity to hear 49 papers in nine sessions covering technological and regulatory developments on NOx control in the United States and abroad since the May 1985 symposium in Boston. Session topics included general environmental issues, low-NOx combustion equipment (i.e., low-NOx burners, reburning, etc.), flue gas treatment, fundamental combustion research, and special issues for cyclone coal-fueled boilers, oil- and gas-fired boilers, and industrial combustion applications.

Advances to the state-of-the-art presented at this symposium include: improved and/or newly applied combustion modifications for pulverized coal-fired boilers; further analyses of reburning, the leading combustion modification option for cyclone-equipped boilers; initial experiences with catalytic flue gas treatment in Europe; studies of NOx control retrofit options for oil- and gas-fired utility systems; and new technology developments for coal, oil, and gas fueled utility and industrial combustors.

This paper summarizes those presentations that discussed significant changes since May 1985 in areas of potential interest to EPRI and its utility members. Where appropriate, they include our perspectives on the applicability of these newly disclosed findings to utility systems.  相似文献
