In order to assess the impact of policies to encourage extensification in less favoured areas and improve our knowledge of extensive livestock systems, we analyzed relationships between the diversity of grassland vegetation and land use management practices and field characteristics. This study, conducted on a mountainous area in the centre of France, was based on 149 fields, mainly of natural grasslands belonging to 7 farmers. Regression analyses were performed to analyze the relations between the grassland vegetation types (five types established from the list of dominant species), management practices (cutting versus grazing and fertilization) and the topographic (altitude and aspect) and topologic (slope, distance and surface area) characteristics of the fields. The land use management rules used by the farmers were studied by specifying the grazing management rules of the herd (dairy cows), as well as those for conserved forage (mainly hay or silage) and were identified from observations mentioned on the “grazing schedules”, as well as from interviews at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the study period. The statistical analysis showed that neither the topographic characteristics of the fields nor the distance from the cowshed or surface area were correlated with the grassland vegetation types. It was the management practices used, largely determined by the field slope, which determined the grassland vegetation type. On the other hand, farmers’ statements showed that the grazing and cutting management rules were mostly determined by the slope of the fields and the distance from the cowshed and, to a lesser extent, by the altitude and aspect. These results showed that the farmers take into consideration environmental differences when choosing fields to allocate for grazing and cutting at different seasons, particularly when they are constrained by these features. Nevertheless, when the constraints were minimal, a wide diversity of grassland vegetation types was also observed. This diversity was a result of attributing different functions to the fields which led to different management practices (defoliation methods and fertilization) and, thus, to different grassland vegetation types. Consequently, for farms where animal feed requirements vary according to the time of the year and the type of animal, we suggest that diversity in the grassland vegetation types is a sound component of these livestock systems.  相似文献

To perform preimplantation DNA diagnosis for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in a female carrier of a dystrophin gene deletion of exons 3–18, we developed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay of exon 17 sequences. Exon 17 was efficiently amplified in all 50 single blastomeres of normal control embryos and in five blastomeres of one male embryo of the DMD carrier obtained after a first preimplantation diagnosis (PID) for gender determination. In ten blastomeres of another two male embryos of the DMD carrier, no PCR signals were observed, probably as a result of the deletion. After intracytoplasmic sperm injection, embryos were analysed for exon 17 and three of the four embryos showing normal PCR signals were replaced, resulting in a singleton pregnancy. Prenatal diagnosis showed a female karyotype and DNA analysis indicated that the fetus was not a DMD carrier.  相似文献

According to the differential investment hypothesis, females paired with attractive mates are expected to invest more in the current reproduction relative to females paired with unattractive males. We experimentally tested this hypothesis in the peafowl (Pavo cristatus) by providing females with males that differed in sexual attractiveness. In agreement with the differential allocation hypothesis, females paired with more ornamented males laid larger eggs, and deposited higher amounts of testosterone into the egg yolk, independently of the sex of the embryo. These results show that the association between paternal phenotype and offspring quality could arise via a differential maternal investment. They also suggest that, if ornamented males do transmit good genes to the progeny, the maternal differential investment can amplify the effect of such good genes on the offspring fitness.  相似文献

Genetic diversity might increase the performance of social groups by improving task efficiency or disease resistance, but direct experimental tests of these hypotheses are rare. We manipulated the level of genetic diversity in colonies of the Argentine ant Linepithema humile, and then recorded the short-term task efficiency of these experimental colonies. The efficiency of low and high genetic diversity colonies did not differ significantly for any of the following tasks: exploring a new territory, foraging, moving to a new nest site, or removing corpses. The tests were powerful enough to detect large effects, but may have failed to detect small differences. Indeed, observed effect sizes were generally small, except for the time to create a trail during nest emigration. In addition, genetic diversity had no statistically significant impact on the number of workers, males and females produced by the colony, but these tests had low power. Higher genetic diversity also did not result in lower variance in task efficiency and productivity. In contrast to genetic diversity, colony size was positively correlated with the efficiency at performing most tasks and with colony productivity. Altogether, these results suggest that genetic diversity does not strongly improve short-term task efficiency in L. humile, but that worker number is a key factor determining the success of this invasive species.Communicated by L. We describe the case of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus, treated by corticosteroids, who presented during two successive pregnancies with serological reactivation of toxoplasmosis associated with fetal lesions. The first infected fetus died in utero with signs of hydrops. The second fetus was treated in utero with a combination of sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine, administered to the mother, and is now well. The increasing number of immunocompromised pregnant patients with immunity to Toxoplasma gondii may lead to a higher risk of reactivation of maternal toxoplasmosis and congenital infection.  相似文献

We report relatively high trehalase activity in the amniotic fluid of two fetuses affected with the congenital nephrotic syndrome of the Finnish type. The results suggest that prenatal detection of this condition can be done on this basis in conjunction with the α-fetoprotein and acetylcholinesterase tests in amniotic fluid.  相似文献

Batch adsorption and desorption experiments were performed using thirteen agricultural soil samples and five pesticides. Experimental data indicated a gradient in pesticide adsorption on soil: trifluralin > 2,4-D > isoproturon> atrazine > bentazone. Atrazine, isoproturon and trifluralin adsorption were correlated to soil organic matter content (r2 = 0.7, 0.82, 0.79 respectively). Conversely, bentazone adsorption was governed by soil pH (r2 = 0.68) while insignificant effect has been shown in the case of 2,4-D. Multiple linear regressions were used to combine relationships between the various soil parameters and the Freundlich adsorption coefficient (K(f)) of each pesticide. Then desorption was assessed since it may reflect some of the interactions involved between the pesticides and the soil components. Adsorbed molecules were released into aqueous solution in the following order: bentazone > atrazine> isoproturon> 2,4-D > trifluralin. The occurrence of hysteresis did not allow an accurate interpretation of the pesticide desorption data because of the possible interplay of several processes.  相似文献

The chemical speciation of trace metals in natural waters has important implications for their biogeochemical behavior. Trace metals are present in natural waters as dissolved species and associated with colloids and particles. The complexation of one trace metal (Cd and Zn at 200 and 390 microg/l respectively) with a green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata in colloid-free algal culture medium and in presence of colloidal humic substances (HS) is presented. The influence of the nature of colloids was also addressed using three "standard" HS: fulvic acid (FA) and, soil (SHA) and peat humic acids (PHA). The chemical speciation model, MINTEQA2, was used to simulate the influence of pH and standardized culture medium on metal association with humic substances. The model was successfully modified to consider the differences in the metal complexation with fulvic (FA) and humic acids (HA). The deviations of concentrations of metals associated with HS between experimental results and model predictions were within a factor of approximately 2. The results of speciation model highlight the influence of the experimental conditions (pH, EDTA) used for alga bioassay on the behavior of Cd and Zn. The computed speciation suggests working with a pH buffered/EDTA-free mixture to avoid undesirable competition effects. The behavior of Cd and Zn in solution is more strongly influenced by HS than by alga. Metal-HS associations depend on metal and humic substance nature and concentration. Cd is complexed to a higher extent than Zn, in particular at larger HS concentration, and the complexation strength is in the order FA相似文献

This paper provides information on the metal complexation potential of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), extracted from activated sludges and from eight pure cultures of bacteria isolated from the same activated sludge. The EPS extracted from pure bacteria cultures are mainly composed of proteins and low quantities of polysaccharides and uronic acids in comparison with EPS extracted from activated sludges. The EPS studied present two apparent pK(a) and the IR spectra show the presence of the same functional groups on all the EPS studied. The ability of EPS to complex Cd, Pb and Ni, was studied at pH 7 with Chau and Ruzic's models using polarography titration. All of the EPS exhibited a greater ability to complex Pb than Ni, Cd showing the weakest affinity overall. The EPS extracted from the pure cultures of bacteria were less able to complex the metals than that extracted from activated sludges. Literature data, IR data and EPS phosphorous content, supported by the EPS pK(a), revealed that carboxylic and phosphoric groups may play a major role in binding to metals at pH 7. This study underlines the importance of metal exposure in order for bacteria to secrete or modify EPS. After exposure, the EPS then exhibit the greatest capacity to bind metal in order to protect bacteria from harmful effects of heavy metals.  相似文献
