OBJECTIVE: Various test procedures have been suggested for assessing the protection afforded by child restraints (CRS) in lateral collisions. Analyses of real world crashes can be used to identify relevant characteristics of the child, restraint, collision, and injury mechanisms that should be incorporated into the design of the test procedures as well as in the design of related ATDs and injury metrics. The objective of this work is to use in-depth crash investigations of children restrained in CRS in side impacts to elucidate specific sources and mechanisms of injuries and explore the role of crash severity variables such as magnitude and location of intrusion and specific impact angle. METHODS: Real world crashes involving children restrained in forward facing CRS in side impacts were analyzed from Partners for Child Passenger Safety, an on-going child specific crash surveillance system in which insurance claims are used to identify cases. In-depth crash investigations using standardized protocols were used to calculate the crash severity and determine the mechanisms and sources of the injuries sustained. RESULTS: Cases of 32 children restrained in CRS in 30 side impact crashes were examined. Twenty-five percent sustained AIS 2+ injuries. The most common injuries sustained by children restrained in CRS in side impact crashes were to the face, head, and lower extremity. Characteristics of the crashes that appeared related to injury were intrusion that entered the child's occupant space or caused an interior part of the vehicle to enter the child's occupant space, forward component of the crash, and the rotation of the CRS, restrained by a seat belt, towards the side of the impact. CONCLUSIONS: The ability to assess the injury potential in a laboratory setting for the body regions of common injury, the head, face, and lower extremity, must be explored. Characteristics of a regulatory-based test procedure to assess injury risk should include a frontal component to the crash and intrusion into the occupant's seating position. Design enhancements of the CRS should address rotation during lateral impacts. These results provide guidance to current efforts to design and regulate these restraints for the safety of child passengers in side impacts. 相似文献

Using molecular- and sensory physiology-based approaches, three novel natural products, a simple ester, and a behavioral antagonist have been identified from the pheromone gland of the navel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). In addition to the previously identified (Z,Z)-11,13-hexadecadienal, the pheromone blend is composed of (Z,Z,Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9,12,15-tricosapentaene, (Z,Z,Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9,12,15-pentacosapentaene, ethyl palmitate, ethyl-(Z,Z)-11,13-hexadecadienoate, and (Z,Z)-11,13-hexadecadien-1-yl acetate. The C23 and C25 pentaenes are not only novel sex pheromones, but also new natural products. In field tests, catches of A. transitella males in traps baited with the full mixture of pheromones were as high as those in traps with virgin females, whereas control and traps baited only with the previously known constituent did not capture any moths at all. The navel orangeworm sex pheromone is also an attractant for the meal moth, Pyralis farinalis L. (Pyralidae), but (Z,Z)-11,13-hexadecadien-1-yl acetate is a behavioral antagonist. Summary Chemical communication plays a very important role in the lives of many social insects. Several different types of pheromones (species-specific chemical messengers) of ants have been described, particularly those involved in recruitment, recognition, territorial and alarm behaviours. Properties of pheromones include activity in minute quantities (thus requiring sensitive methods for chemical analysis) and specificity (which can have chemotaxonomic uses). The rate and extent of biodegradation of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) in ground-water was studied in samples from a contaminated site which contained total BTEX concentrations of up to 20 000 microg litre(-1). All compounds were rapidly degraded under natural aerobic conditions. Elevation of incubation temperature, supply of organic nutrients or addition of inorganic fertiliser did not increase the rate or extent of biodegradation and it appeared that oxygen supply was the factor limiting BTEX degradation at this site. Attempts to increase the dissolved oxygen concentration in the ground-water by the addition of hydrogen peroxide to give a final concentration of 200 mg litre(-1) resulted in the complete inhibition of biodegradation. No biodegradation occurred under anaerobic conditions except when nitrate was provided as a terminal electron acceptor for microbial respiration. Under denitrifying conditions there was apparent biodegradation of benzene, toluene, ethyl-benzene, m-xylene and p-xylene but o-xylene was not degraded. This article describes three applications of the Universal Soil Loss Equation for further defining differences between natural environments in terms of their suitabilities for recreation use. Physical capacity limits based upon vulnerability to erosion and loss of soil productivity are discussed. The calcium and lead burdens of tissue fractions of Lumbricus rubellus were quantified in 'native' animals from acidic and calcareous disused lead mines, and from control ('naive') animals exposed to lead-polluted soils under laboratory conditions. Most of the body burden of lead was accumulated within the posterior alimentary canal, and significant positive correlations were generally found between the calcium and lead burdens in this tissue fraction, which were evident in both the naturally and laboratory lead-exposed animals. The calcium:lead correlation is probably due to a proliferation of the calcium-rich, lead-sequestering chloragosome granules, and may thus be regarded as a specific tissue response to cellular lead incursion. No calcium-lead relationship was recorded in the rest (largely composed of the body wall) fraction of earthworms inhabiting the lead-polluted sites. However, a concomitant increase in calcium and lead in this tissue fraction of the laboratory lead-exposed control animals was noted. It is concluded that in naturally lead-exposed earthworms, the cells of this tissue fraction may be relatively resistant to the toxic effects of the metal. By contrast, it is apparent that a non-specific cytotoxic response by the cells of the rest of 'naive' animals occurs, as demonstrated by the concurrent increase in its calcium and lead burdens. These results suggest that a tolerance mechanism to lead, perhaps with a genetic basis, may exist in earthworms naturally exposed to lead. 相似文献

Use made in marine ecology of methods for estimating demographic parameters from size/frequency data
Macdonald and Pitcher's method of decomposing a sizefrequency histogram into cohorts (mathematical optimization of the fit of the distribution function to the histogram) has been used to estimate the composition of random samples drawn from populations with known cohort structure. The large-sample behaviour of the method is in accordance with the results of asymptotic theory. With sample sizes typical of those used in many ecological studies, good estimates often could not be obtained without imposing constraints upon the estimation procedure, even when the number of age classes in the population was known. If the number of age classes was not known, it was frequently difficult to determine from small samples. When unconstrained solutions were obtainable, confidence limits about estimates were often very wide. Our results and information in the theoretical literature indicate that if the Petersen method (whereby several modes on a size-frequency histogram are taken to represent single age classes and all age classes to be present) does not work, accurate estimates of demographic parameters are unlikely to be obtainable using more rigorous methods. In view of these difficulties, we recommend that an iptimization method, such as that described by Macdonald and Pitcher, be used to estimate demographic parameters. Standard errors of estimates should be reported. Optimization methods give an indication when the data is inadequate to obtain accurate parameter estimates, either by failing to converge or by placing large standard errors about the estimates. Graphical methods do not give a clear warning of this, and should be avoided except where the modes on the size-frequency histogram are very well separated and sample sizes are large. Often, assumptions must be made about population parameters to enable their estimation. This may involve constraining some parameters to particular values, assuming a fixed relationship between cohort mean sizes and their standard deviations, or by assuming that individuals grow according to a von Bertalanffy curve.
