We tested the effects of osmotic stress on survival, developmental rate, and level of HSPs on American horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus) embryos. Animals were maintained in the laboratory at an ambient salinity of 20 ppt and then exposed to 4-h osmotic shocks at salinities of 10, 30, 40, 50, and 60 ppt, with a control group at 20 ppt. Horseshoe crab embryos had 100% developmental success (defined as individuals reaching the first instar or trilobite larval stage) at all salinities. However, osmotic stresses, especially hyperosmotic conditions, slowed the rate of development. Embryos subjected to osmotic stress showed higher levels of HSP70 and HSP90 than control animals kept at a salinity of 20 ppt. HSPs are of value to horseshoe crab embryos in surviving the fluctuating salinities that are typical of estuarine beach habitats.  相似文献

A newly discovered infectious disease of amphibians, chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, is implicated in population declines and possible extinctions throughout the world. The purpose of our study was to examine the effects of B. dendrobatidis on the mountain yellow-legged frog (Rana muscosa) in the Sierra Nevada of California (USA). We (1) quantified the prevalence and incidence of B. dendrobatidis through repeat surveys of several hundred R. muscosa populations in the southern Sierra Nevada; (2) described the population-level effects of B. dendrobatidis on R. muscosa population abundance; and (3) compared the mortality rates of infected and uninfected R. muscosa individuals from pre- through post-metamorphosis using both laboratory and field experiments. Mouthpart inspections conducted in 144 and 132 R. muscosa populations in 2003 and 2004, respectively, indicated that 19% of R. muscosa populations in both years showed indications of chytridiomycosis. Sixteen percent of populations that were uninfected in 2003 became infected by 2004. Rana muscosa population sizes were reduced by an average of 88% following B. dendrobatidis outbreaks at six sites, but at seven B. dendrobatidis-negative sites, R. muscosa population sizes increased by an average of 45% over the same time period. In the laboratory, all infected R. muscosa developed fatal chytridiomycosis after metamorphosis, while all uninfected individuals remained healthy. In the field experiment in which R. muscosa tadpoles were caged at infected and uninfected sites, 96% of the individuals that metamorphosed at infected sites died vs. 5% at the uninfected sites. These studies indicate that chytridiomycosis causes high mortality in post-metamorphic R. muscosa, that this emerging disease is the proximate cause of numerous observed R. muscosa population declines, and that the disease threatens this species with extirpation at numerous sites in California's Sierra Nevada.  相似文献

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA) contents were measured daily during the zoeal development of the crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould). DNA concentration (per unit protein) decreased as larvae increased in size. Total DNA content per larva showed an abrupt increase at the second molt and increased steadily during the third and fourth zoeal stages. Ratios of fresh weight to DNA were highest during the first two zoeal stages, dropped sharply at the second molt, then increased during the third and fourth zoeal stages. RNA:DNA ratios showed cyclical activity apparently related to the molt cycle. Assuming that fresh weight: DNA ratio reflects cell size and that DNA content reflects cell number, growth during the first two stages is due primarily to increase in cell size and during the last two stages to a combination of increase in cell size and number. Assuming further that RNA:DNA ratios reflect protein-synthesis activity, such activity in these larvae follows a rhythm related to the molt cycle.  相似文献

Earthworms (Lumbricus rubellus and Dendrodrilus rubidus) were collected from several acidic and calcareous abandoned ferrous metalliferous mine sites. Tissue lead concentrations were substantially lower than the total soil lead concentrations, except at one site (Cwmystwyth) where the tissue lead concentrations of both species were approximately 5 to 10 times higher than that of the soil. Soil lead was the major factor in determining the tissue lead concentration, although it was demonstrated that both soil pH and soil calcium concentration could markedly increase the % variance in tissue lead concentration. These findings help explain the apparent anomaly in tissue lead concentrations of earthworms from Cwmystwyth, where the soil is acidic and has exceptionally low calcium concentrations. Soil-liming experiments provided supportive evidence that soil pH, coupled with soil calcium, influences lead accumulation by earthworms, but a filter paper feeding experiment provided unequivocal evidence that soil calcium concentration alone can influence lead accumulation by earthworms. It is concluded that, although lead accumulation by earthworms is influenced by both physico-chemical and biochemical mechanisms, the latter over-rides the former, i.e. soil calcium is more important factor in determining the accumulation of lead earthworms than is soil pH.  相似文献

Summary Solitary and schooling banded killifish (Fundulus diaphanus Lesueur) were attacked with a fish predator model in the littoral zone of a lake and their flight reaction distance to the model recorded. Reaction distance of solitary fish did not differ significantly from that of schooling fish, which was statistically constant over a wide range of observed school sizes. The results fo not support the proposed early predator warning function of social groups, which predicts an asymptotically increasing flight reaction distance with increasing group size. However, fish in larger and safer groups may detect an approaching predator sooner but delay their flight response, thereby permitting their individual members to spend more time assessing the nature of the threat before escaping. Such a strategy would reduce costly false alarms. Relative variation in recorded reaction distances was correlated negatively with school size, suggesting that schooling reduces variability in latency time to escape predators. This may be evidence for the above behavioural strategy. Further, the speed of transmission of the flight response within the school greatly exceeded the speed of approach of the predator model. This phenomenon enables schooling individuals to initiate avoidance behaviour before the approaching predator can be detected and before it reaches them.  相似文献

This article describes the increasing connections between the fields of Indigenous studies and environmental management and examines some of the ways that an Indigenous studies perspective can guide thinking about environmental management. Indigenous groups have been involved in the management of environmental and natural resources on their lands since time immemorial. Indigenous groups have also become increasingly involved in Western practices of environmental management with the advent of co-management institutions, subsistence boards, traditional ecological knowledge forums, and environmental issues affecting Indigenous resources. Thus, it is an important time for scholarship that explores how Indigenous groups are both shaping and being affected by processes of environmental management. This article summarizes key findings and themes from eight papers situated at the intersection of these two fields of study and identify means by which environmental managers can better accommodate Indigenous rights and perspectives. It is the authors’ hope that increased dialog between Indigenous studies and environmental management can contribute to the building of sustainable and socially just environmental management practices.  相似文献

Whole animal concentrations of Pb, Zn and Cd were measured in herbivorous (1 snail species; 1 dipteran larva species), herbivorous + detritivorous (2 slug species), detritivorous (3 woodlouse species; 3 earthworm species), and carnivorous (1 carabid beetle species; 1 lithobiid centipede species) terrestrial macroinvertebrates collected at a disused Pb/Zn mine site. No evidence was found for an accretion of any metal during transference from herbivores to carnivores; the highest metal concentrations were, in fact, generally found in detritivores. The lack of metal bio-amplification during food chain transference is probably due to the sequestration of metals (notably Pb and Zn) in insoluble inorganic-rich granules within certain target organs and cells.

Earthworms and woodlice, respectively, showed major differences in metal concentrations. These differences between closely related species frequently exceeded differences between unrelated species occupying different trophic levels, and may be attributable to a combination of ill-defined ecological and physiological differences that ensure habitat and resource partitioning.  相似文献

This article describes the indicators and data sources used by the Botswana Drought Early Warning System formally established in early 1984, the main uses of the indicators in the assessment of drought conditions and the design of relief programmes are outlined. Limitations of the sources of data available are discussed, as is the feasibility of adding some possible further indicators. In conclusion, the importance of a functioning Early Warning System in a country highly susceptible to repeated droughts is stressed, in the context of die current effort to elaborate a comprehensive National Food Strategy and to establish a Regional Early Warning System for Southern Africa.  相似文献
