Landfills have been the dominant alternative for disposal of solid waste and there are tens of thousands of closed landfills throughout the world that require a long-term management strategy. In contrast to approaches based on time or target values, this paper describes a performance-based methodology for evaluation of post-closure care (PCC). Using the methodology, critical components of PCC at a landfill, including leachate and gas management, groundwater monitoring and cover integrity, are considered to determine whether a landfill meets defined conditions for functional stability and can transition from regulated PCC to a post-regulatory custodial care program representing de minimus care activities only. The methodology is predicated on understanding the biological, chemical, and physical behavior of a landfill and the presence of sufficient data to verify expected trends in landfill behavior. If an evaluation suggests that a change can be made to PCC, the landfill owner must perform confirmation monitoring and then surveillance monitoring at a decreasing frequency to verify that the change is protective of human health and the environment. A hypothetical case study showed that using the methodology to evaluate site-specific PCC requirements could result in increased environmental protection at comparable cost by spending available funds where they are most needed. 相似文献

Social Network Analysis has become an important methodological tool for advancing our understanding of human and animal group
behaviour. However, researchers tend to rely on arbitrary distance and time measures when defining ‘contacts’ or ‘associations’
between individuals based on preliminary observation. Otherwise, criteria are chosen on the basis of the communication range
of sensor devices (e.g. bluetooth communication ranges) or the sampling frequencies of collection devices (e.g. Global Positioning
System devices). Thus, researchers lack an established protocol for determining both relevant association distances and minimum
sampling rates required to accurately represent the network structure under investigation. In this paper, we demonstrate how
researchers can use experimental and statistical methods to establish spatial and temporal association patterns and thus correctly
characterise social networks in both time and space. To do this, we first perform a mixing experiment with Merino sheep (Ovis aries) and use a community detection algorithm that allows us to identify the spatial and temporal distance at which we can best
identify clusters of previously familiar sheep. This turns out to be within 2–3 m of each other for at least 3 min. We then
calculate the network graph entropy rate—a measure of ease of spreading of information (e.g. a disease) in a network—to determine
the minimum sampling rate required to capture the variability observed in our sheep networks during distinct activity phases.
Our results indicate the need for sampling intervals of less than a minute apart. The tools that we employ are versatile and
could be applied to a wide range of species and social network datasets, thus allowing an increase in both the accuracy and
efficiency of data collection when exploring spatial association patterns in gregarious species. 相似文献

Agricultural irrigation accounts for a large fraction of the total water use in the western United States. The Mapping Evapotranspiration at high Resolution with Internalized Calibration (METRIC) remote sensing energy balance model is being used to estimate historical agricultural water use in western Nevada to evaluate basin‐wide water budgets. Each METRIC evapotranspiration (ET) estimate must be calibrated by a trained user, which requires some iterative time investment and results in variation in ET estimates between users. An automated calibration algorithm for the METRIC model was designed to generate ET estimates comparable to those from trained users by mimicking the manual calibration process. Automated calibration allows for rapid generation of METRIC ET estimates with minimal manual intervention, as well as uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of the model. The variation in ET estimates generated by the automated calibration algorithm was found to be similar to the variation in manual ET estimates. Results indicate that uncertainty was highest for fields with low ET levels and lowest for fields with high ET levels, with a seasonal mean uncertainty of approximately 5% for all fields. In addition, in a blind comparison, automated daily and seasonal ET estimates compared well with flux tower measurement ET data at multiple sites. Automated methods can generate first‐order ET estimates that are similar to time intensive manual efforts with less time investment. 相似文献

After closure, municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills must be managed and controlled to avoid adverse effects on human health and the environment (HHE). Aftercare (or post-closure care) can be brought to an end when the authorities consider the landfill to no longer pose a threat to HHE. Different approaches have been suggested for long-term landfill management and evaluation of aftercare completion. In this paper, research on aftercare and its completion is analyzed and regulatory approaches for the completion of landfill aftercare are reviewed. Approaches to aftercare could be categorized as (i) target values, (ii) impact/risk assessment, and (iii) performance based. Comparison of these approaches illustrates that each has limitations and strengths. While target values are typically used as screening indicators to be complemented with site-specific assessments, impact/risk assessment approaches address the core issue about aftercare completion, but face large uncertainties and require a high level of expertise. A performance-based approach allows for the combination of target values and impact/risk assessments in a consistent evaluation framework with the aim of sequentially reducing aftercare intensity and, ultimately, leading to the completion of aftercare. At a regulatory level, simple qualitative criteria are typically used as the primary basis for defining completion of aftercare, most likely due to the complexity of developing rigorous evaluation methodologies. This paper argues that development of transparent and consistent regulatory procedures represents the basis for defining the desired state of a landfill at the end of aftercare and for reducing uncertainty about the intensity and duration of aftercare. In this context, recently presented technical guidelines and the ongoing debate with respect to their regulatory acceptance are a valuable step towards developing strategies for the cost-effective protection of HHE at closed MSW landfills. We investigated sexual conflict over parental care in blue-headed vireos (Vireo solitarius) and documented the first example of unvarying unisexual brood desertion in passerines. Females at all nests (N = 24) that were monitored closely near fledgling, deserted their broods on or near the day of fledging leaving males alone
to complete parental care of young. No males deserted. This observational evidence was confirmed with radiotracking of females
(2004, 2007) and both pair members (2008). Radiotracked females began visiting distant males 1–4 days before young left the
nest, subsequently paired with males 355–802 m away, and laid first eggs in new nests less than 5 days after deserting. In
contrast, females suffering nest predation did not desert and renested with the same male. We suggest equal parental care
(nest building, incubation, feeding) in the sexes, genetic monogamy, and an adult sex ratio biased towards males has led to
female control of brood desertion in this species. Unisexual desertion may be more important in altricial birds than generally
realized and we discuss prerequisites to predict its occurrence. One is genetic monogamy, which may be a female tactic that

The feeding ecology of leptostracans is not well-known. In the present study, species of Nebalia (Crustacea: Leptostraca) were captured every month for 1 year from Lobster Bay, Hong Kong, using baited traps. Captured individuals fell into a size range of 0.36–3.64 mm and 0.95–5.52 mm in carapace and total lengths, respectively. They were divided into different reproductive stages based on the morphology of the second pair of antennae and thoracopods. Sexual dimorphism becomes apparent between 0.7–1.5 mm (CL) and 1.4–3.2 mm (TL). Most individuals collected were sexually differentiated, but immature (79.7% of the captured individuals), followed by post-ovigerous (11.4%) and ovigerous (8.9%) females. Sexually undifferentiated juveniles were rare (3.9%). The sex ratio of the immature individuals approached 1:1 with a propensity towards male dominance. Not one mature male was captured. Although females with setose thoracopod endopods, indicating that they were ovigerous, were captured frequently, only two were carrying eggs. The two brooding females had clutch sizes of 11 and 17 eggs. Alternate peaks in relative abundance of ovigerous and post-ovigerous females were identified, the latter following the former. Reproductive activities occurred mainly in April–May and October–December, indicating that two cohorts are recruited. Catches using baited traps could be explained by the reproductive season of Nebalia sp. High catches were usually associated with the months of highest reproductive activity, low catches with peaks in post-ovigerous females. It is therefore concluded that not all individuals at various reproductive stages are attracted to carrion and hence adopt a scavenging feeding mode. We compare results of four organizations of an economy that is dependent upon an irreplenishable resource but may develop a new technology that releases that dependence. We find a decentralized competitive organization can replicate the behavior of a centrally planned economy, given an appropriate distribution of initial wealth. This holds whether the R&D is done by the government or by the natural resource sector, so long as borrowing from other sectors is possible. Further, the economy's behavior is independent of whether the resource sector is monopolistic or competitive if and only if the production function is Cobb-Douglas. 相似文献

Summary We tested two predictions of the ranging hypothesis (Morton 1982) which suggests that: (1) For distance estimation of singing intruders from them, birds compare degraded songs they hear to undegraded songs in their memory. (2) The strength of response of birds to songs depends on how well they can range the songs as coming from inside or outside the territory.In accordance with first prediction we found that, Carolina wrens discriminate significantly between songs played from outside to those played inside their territories only if they are familliar with the song type played (Fig. 1). In accordance with the second prediction, on the average, the birds in our study responded stronger to unfamiliar than to familiar songs when these were played from outside the territory, but stronger to familiar than to unfamiliar songs when played inside it (Fig. 2). We concluded that this was because they could range the familiar songs with greater certainty.The variance in the data was, in part, due to changes in the birds' responses during the day. We report for the first time, an increase in the strength of territorial defense of birds later in the morning, accompanied by a decrease in singing in response to song playback. We suggest that these changes reflect an increase in energy gain and worse acoustic conditions later in the day. 相似文献
