The Parker Turner cave diving accident was unique. Out of several hundred cave diving fatalities that occurred in Florida during the past 50 years, it is the only one that occurred due to a partial collapse of the cave. Here, we propose a natural physical process that might explain this unique accident. While it is possible that the presence of the divers in the cave while the cave collapsed just happened to occur simultaneously, this is unlikely. It is suggested here that resonance in the air pockets in the cavern (or cave), created by breathing (open circuit) divers, may have contributed to the collapse. We propose that divers present in the cavern during the dive may have (unknowingly) caused the collapse through the pressurized air that they release with each breath. When the breathing period of the diver(s) matches the natural oscillations period of our new “cave oscillator”, the ensuing resonance causes the air pressure in the pockets to increase uncontrollably. We model the system as a non-uniform U-tube filled with water on the bottom and compressed air on top. The top of the tube is sealed on both sides so that the compressed air is trapped in the chambers above the water. The bottom part of the tube represents the water filled cavern (or cave) whereas the vertical tubes represent the air cavities. We show analytically that such a system is subject to natural oscillations with a period of roughly the same as the breathing rate of the typical diver.  相似文献

Spatial management is a valuable strategy to advance regional goals for nature conservation, economic development, and human health. One challenge of spatial management is navigating the prioritization of multiple features. This challenge becomes more pronounced in dynamic management scenarios, in which boundaries are flexible in space and time in response to changing biological, environmental, or socioeconomic conditions. To implement dynamic management, decision-support tools are needed to guide spatial prioritization as feature distributions shift under changing conditions. Marxan is a widely applied decision-support tool designed for static management scenarios, but its utility in dynamic management has not been evaluated. EcoCast is a new decision-support tool developed explicitly for the dynamic management of multiple features, but it lacks some of Marxan's functionality. We used a hindcast analysis to compare the capacity of these 2 tools to prioritize 4 marine species in a dynamic management scenario for fisheries sustainability. We successfully configured Marxan to operate dynamically on a daily time scale to resemble EcoCast. The relationship between EcoCast solutions and the underlying species distributions was more linear and less noisy, whereas Marxan solutions had more contrast between waters that were good and poor to fish. Neither decision-support tool clearly outperformed the other; the appropriateness of each depends on management purpose, resource-manager preference, and technological capacity of tool developers. Article impact statement: Marxan can function as a decision-support tool for dynamic management scenarios in which boundaries are flexible in space and time.  相似文献

Strategies for remediation of drilling mud wastes at a typical deep sour gas well site in the foothills of Alberta were assessed in terms of financial and social costs and benefits, in alignment with established sustainable remediation and decision analysis principles. Managers of contaminated sites containing historical drilling wastes are challenged with managing liability through several regulatory changes over time. Excavation and disposal of the contaminated soil from the site was the only means of securing regulatory release, with the nearest landfill located 150 km away. A perception exists that in many cases excavation and disposal inflicts unnecessary levels of site intrusiveness and public disturbance when other options achieving a similar risk end point may do so for lower social cost. The study tested this hypothesis to ascertain whether the currently accepted solution is the best option when the wider costs and benefits to society and the environment are included. Eight remedial strategies were assessed using cost–benefit analysis, including using environmental economics techniques to quantify social and environmental impacts. The economic model showed that methods such as capping in‐place or engineered encapsulation were superior to full excavation and disposal from financial and sustainability perspectives. Quantified external costs and benefits such as road damage, greenhouse gas emissions, public nuisance and safety, and community amenity value were influential in identifying superior options. It was demonstrated that $0.2 million of societal costs could be avoided by choosing capping over landfill disposal. This represents substantial implications when viewed in the context of this and other operators’ portfolios of hundreds of abandoned wells in the area. ©2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

The nitrogen-containing products of smog chamber reactions have been the subject of much controversy. Concern has arisen over nitrogen products because of the almost universally poor nitrogen balance reported for irradiated mixtures of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. Some possible nitrogen-containing products, such as molecular nitrogen, nitrous oxide, and nitroolefins have been investigated and shown to be unimportant. The nitrogen products most often measured are peroxyacetyl nitrate and residual nitrogen dioxide. These two products rarely comprise more than 70% of the initial nitrogen at the end of an experiment, and often account for less than 50%. Previous experiments in which total nitrate was determined in the gas phase and on the vessel walls at the end of irradiation have shown very good nitrogen balances. The assumption has been made that the nitrate arises from nitric acid formed on the walls by adsorbed N2O5.

In the work reported here, all major nitrogen-containing compounds have been monitored continuously for the first time. Nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide have been monitored by chemilumines-cence and automated Saltzman techniques. Methyl, ethyl, and peroxyacetyl nitrate have been determined by gas chromatogra-phy. Two methods, one continuous and one integrated, have been specially developed to measure nitric acid both in the smog chambers and in the atmosphere. Continuous determination of these compounds yields good nitrogen balances throughout the irradiations.

Profiles of the nitrogen-containing species from irradiated HC/ NOx mixtures are discussed in terms of nitrogen products and nitrogen balance. Differences in product distribution for different hydrocarbon systems are also considered. Using rate information from the nitrogen compound profiles, important reactions leading to nitrogen-containing products are identified. Interference with the chemiluminescent technique by HON02, PAN, and C2H5ONO2 is discussed.  相似文献

This paper is a response to a recent special issue of Regional Environmental Change, “Quantifying vulnerability to drought from different disciplinary perspectives” (vol. 8, number 4, 2008). In this paper, we examine some of the challenges facing efforts to understand vulnerability to drought through quantification as they are manifest in some of the articles in this special issue.

The National Forests of the United States encompass 192.7?million acres (78?million hectares) of land, which is nearly five percent of the total land area of the nation. These lands are managed by the US Forest Service (USFS) for multiple uses, including extraction of timber, production of fossil fuels and minerals, public recreation, and the preservation of biodiversity, clean air, water, and soils. The USFS is interested in valuing the natural capital within, and the ecosystem services provided by, their lands. This is in part to justify expenditures in a time of limited resources. We used emergy and an environmental accounting approach, to quantify the ecosystem services, the exported environmental goods and information provided by National Forest System (NFS) lands, and the natural capital residing on those lands. Environmental accounting using emergy provides a method to value these flows of services and storages of capital using a common biophysical unit, the solar emjoule and its monetary equivalent the emdollar. We compare emdollar values to economic values gleaned from the literature. In 2005, the ecosystem services provided by USFS lands were equivalent to 197?billion emdollars, and the value of NFS natural capital was 24.3?trillion emdollars. Our evaluation suggests that the Federal Government budget allocation for the NFS ($5.55E+09 in 2005) was well spent, protecting 24.3?trillion emdollars in natural capital and insuring annual ecosystem services totaling 197?billion emdollars. Monetary values for some natural capital and ecosystem services are similar to emergy-derived values (resources like fish, wildlife, water, and firewood extracted from forests), and others are widely different (biodiversity, fossil, and mineral resources). There is large uncertainty associated with computing the environment’s contributions to society whether using emergy or accepted economic techniques; yet, the magnitude of these emergy-derived estimates suggests that even with the uncertainty, the values are significant and monetary expenditures for the Forest Service are justified.  相似文献
