Birdsong serves to attract mates and to deter territorial rivals. Even though song is not restricted to males, this dual function
has almost exclusively been demonstrated for male song. To test the generality of hypotheses on birdsong, we investigated
female song in the sex-role reversed, classically polyandrous African black coucal (Centropus grillii) in the context of female–female competition. We compared spontaneously vocalizing females with females vocally responding
to a playback simulating a conspecific intruder. Females changed vocal parameters in response to playbacks: They lowered the
pitch of their vocalizations and enhanced the duration of song elements when being challenged. Also, the composition of the
vocalizations was altered. There was no significant correlation between pitch and body size parameters in spontaneous song,
but there was for response songs, with larger females having a lower pitch. These changes in vocal properties suggest that
the vocalizations are important for mutual assessment of competitive abilities in females. Our findings confirm the general
role of intrasexual competition in vocal communication of birds. 相似文献

To attract a breeding partner, males may behave differently when they are bachelors compared to when they are paired. Comparisons
between groups of paired males versus groups of unpaired males in temperate-breeding animals have revealed such differences
in signalling behaviour. Few studies, however, have explored how individual males alter their signalling behaviour with changes
in pairing status, and very few investigations have explored paired versus unpaired male behaviour in tropical animals. During
a 5-year study in Costa Rica, we analysed changes in the singing behaviour of male rufous-and-white wrens (Thryothorus rufalbus) when they were paired and when they were bachelors. We compared three aspects of male vocal behaviour: gross differences
in song output, variation in repertoire use and differences in song structure. Males as bachelors had significantly higher
song output and switched song types less frequently. Contrary to our expectation, bachelors sang significantly fewer song
types from their repertoire compared to when those same males had a breeding partner. Songs sung by bachelor males were higher
in syllabic diversity and had broader-bandwidth terminal syllables than the songs those males sang only when paired. Within
song types, the fine structure of songs remained consistent across pairing status. Our results demonstrate that males change
their singing behaviour with pairing status, delivering songs at a higher rate but with less variety when they are bachelors.
Rufous-and-white wrens are renowned for their vocal duets, and we discuss the pattern of repertoire use in light of their
duetting behaviour. These results enhance our understanding of how male behaviour varies with pairing status and the importance
of vocal signalling behaviour in socially monogamous tropical animals. 相似文献

The earlier flowering times exhibited by many plant species are a conspicuous sign of climate change. Altered phenologies have caused concern that species could suffer population declines if they flower at times when effective pollinators are unavailable. For two perennial wildflowers, Tradescantia ohiensis and Asclepias incarnata, we used an experimental approach to explore how changing phenology affects the taxonomic composition of the pollinator assemblage and the effectiveness of individual pollinator taxa. After finding in the previous year that fruit set varied with flowering time, we manipulated flowering onset in greenhouses, placed plants in the field over the span of five weeks, and measured pollinator effectiveness as the number of seeds produced after a single visit to a flower. The average effectiveness of pollinators and the expected rates of pollination success were lower for plants of both species flowering earlier than for plants flowering at historical times, suggesting there could be reproductive costs to earlier flowering. Whereas for A. incarnata, differences in average seed set among weeks were due primarily to changes in the composition of the pollinator assemblage, the differences for T. ohiensis were driven by the combined effects of compositional changes and increases over time in the effectiveness of some pollinator taxa. Both species face the possibility of temporal mismatch between the availability of the most effective pollinators and the onset of flowering, and changes in the effectiveness of individual pollinator taxa through time may add an unexpected element to the reproductive consequences of such mismatches. 相似文献

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS) is a multisystem disorder characterized by somatic defects and mental retardation. Prenatal diagnosis of this severe condition is difficult in view of the non-specific ultrasound abnormalities. We report three cases with prenatally suspected CdLS based on the ultrasound findings as well as low PAPP-A detected on first trimester screening in one case, and the results of the autopsy and the NIPBL gene mutation analysis. Meteorological conditions have a decisive impact on surface ozone concentrations. In this study, an empirical model is used to explain the interdependence of ozone and grosswetterlagen. Different meteorological parameters such as air temperature, global solar radiation, relative humidity, wind direction and wind speed are used. Additional nitric oxide (NO) was taken as a representative for the emission situation and ozone maximum of the preceding day in order to evaluate the development of the photochemical situation. The dataset includes data collected over a period of three years (1992–1994) from three stations outside of Munich and one in the center of Munich. All values become variables by calculating means, sums or maxima of the basic dataset consisting of half-hour means. Seasonal periodicity of data is detected with Fourier analysis and eliminated by a division method after computing a seasonal index. The dataset is divided into three different grosswetterlagen groups, depending on main wind direction. One mostly cyclonic (westerly winds), onemixed (alternating winds) and one onlyanticyclonic (easterly winds). The last is completed with one summertime group including values from April to August. Factor analysis is performed for each group to obtain independent linear variable combinations. Overall, relative humidity is the dominant parameter, a typical value indicating meteorological conditions during a grosswetterlage. Linear multiple regression analysis is performed using the factors obtained to reveal how the ozone concentrations are explained in terms of meteorological parameters and NO. The results improve from cyclonic to anticyclonic grosswetterlagen in conformance with the increasing significance of photochemistry, indicated by the high solar radiation and high temperature, and the low relative humidity and low wind speed. The explained variance r2 reaches its maximum with more than 50 % of the time in Munich center. This empirical model is applicable to the forecasting of local ozone maximum concentrations with a total standard error deviation of 8.5 to 12.8 % and, if ozone concentrations exceed 80 ppb, with a standard error deviation of 5.4 to 9.5 %. 相似文献

The goal of this work is to make ecotoxicologically-relevant substance bands visible on thin-layer chromatographic plates.
