Typical soils in Greece are neutral or alkaline and frequently are lime-rich, conditions that favour the accumulation of trace elements. The traditional use of metal-based fungicides in orchards and vineyards may have led to the accumulation of trace metals. Concentrations of Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn (aqua regia digestion) and some other soil parameters were measured in organically and conventionally cultivated soils (0–30 cm) from vineyards, olive groves and citrus groves of varying ages, and in uncultivated soils. Many vineyards and olive groves are situated in hilly or mountainous areas with sloping ground or terraces in contrastto citrus, which is cultivated in lower lying areas. Due to the difficulty of access, these crops often are cultivated extensively in both systems. Trace metal concentrations were found to lie withinthe ranges expected for the predominant soil types. Cu concentrations were relatively high (>100 mg kg-1) in a few samples, but were not correlated with the age of the cultivation. A two-way ANOVA analysis showed larger differences in the mean concentrations of Cu, Mn and Zn between different crops (p≤ 0.001 for Cu, p≤ 0.05 for Zn, and p≤ 0.1 for Mn) than between different cultivation systems (no significant differences). The crop by cultivation interaction was not statistically significant for any metal (p > 0.8). Strong correlations (p≤ 0.001) were found between Fe, Mn and Zn and both clay concentration and CEC, although these relationshipswere not uniform throughout the different crop and cultivation systems. Concentrations of Cu were related to clay concentrations only for vineyards and to CEC only for citrus. Correlations were not found with organic matter or pH. 相似文献

Site-specific weed management presupposes the careful monitoring and mapping of weed infestation areas. Cut-edge sensor technologies coupled with geographical information systems (GIS) provide the means for reliable decision-making concerning weed management even in sub-field level. In present research, two different spectral sensing systems were engaged in order to digitally map weed patches as grown in four different cotton fields in Central Greece. The systems used were a set of two Crop Circle multispectral sensors ACS-430 and a digital camera Nikon D300S. The spaces between cotton rows were scanned and photographed with the two systems accordingly. Raw recorded data were stored and analyzed in GIS environment producing spatially interpolated maps of red-edge normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and weed cover percentage values. Both mapping approaches were satisfactorily related to weed distribution as occurred in the fields; however, the photographic method tended to underestimate weed populations. Correlation of red-edge NDVI and weed cover values, at the points where photographs were taken, as revealed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient was high (r?>?0.83) and statistically significant at the 0.01 level. A first-degree linear equation adequately modeled (R2?>?0.7) the between value pair relations, strengthening the validity of the two methodologies in spatially monitoring weed patches. The methodologies and the technologies used in the study can be used for yearly mapping weed flora in cotton cultivation and potentially constitute a means of rationalizing herbicide application in terms of doses and spatio-temporal decision-making. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to develop cost-effective, appropriate solidification technologies for treating hazardous industrial wastes that are currently disposed of in ways that may threaten the quality of local groundwater. One major objective was to use materials other than cement, and preferably materials that are themselves wastes, as the solidification additives, namely using wastes to treat wastes or locally available natural material. This research examines the cement-based and lime-based stabilization/solidification (S/S) techniques applied for waste generated at a metal-plating industry and a dye industry. For the lime-based S/S process the following binder mixtures were used: cement kiln dust/ lime, bentonite/lime and gypsum/lime. For the cement-based S/S process three binder mixtures were used: cement kiln dust/cement, bentonite/cement and gypsum/cement. The leachability of the wastes was evaluated using the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure. The applicability and optimum weight ratio of the binder mixtures were estimated using the unconfined compressive strength test. The optimum ratio mixtures were mixed with waste samples in different ratios and cured for 28 days in order to find the S/S products with the highest strength and lowest leachability at the same time. The results of this work showed that the cement-and lime-based S/S process, using cement kiln dust and bentonite as additives can be effectively used in order to treat industrial waste. 相似文献

This paper refers to the management of the construction and demolition (C&D) waste since, according to the EU Waste Strategy, C&D waste is considered to be one of the priority waste streams and appropriate actions need to be taken with respect to its effective management. Initially, the paper presents the state-of-the-art of the problem of C&D waste, including the amount and composition of C&D waste in EU countries, differences in the characteristics of this waste stream depending on its origin, as well as collection and management practices that are applied. A methodology is described for the estimation of the quantities of the waste stream under examination, since in most cases quantitative primary data is not available. Next, the fundamentals for the development of an integrated scheme for the management of C&D waste are presented and discussed, such as appropriate demolition procedures and location of waste management (off-site waste management, on-site waste management, direct on-site recovery, centralized on-site recovery). Finally, taking into consideration all relevant parameters, alternative systems that could be applied for the management of the C&D waste are suggested. 相似文献

Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) constitutes one of the most complicated solid waste streams in terms of its composition, and, as a result, it is difficult to be effectively managed. In view of the environmental problems derived from WEEE management, many countries have established national legislation to improve the reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery of this waste stream so as to apply suitable management schemes. In this work, alternative systems are examined for the WEEE management in Cyprus. These systems are evaluated by developing and applying the Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method PROMETHEE. In particular, through this MCDM method, 12 alternative management systems were compared and ranked according to their performance and efficiency. The obtained results show that the management schemes/systems based on partial disassembly are the most suitable for implementation in Cyprus. More specifically, the optimum scenario/system that can be implemented in Cyprus is that of partial disassembly and forwarding of recyclable materials to the native existing market and disposal of the residues at landfill sites. 相似文献

A system consisting of an electric machine and a human body is studied and the resulting electric field is predicted. A 3-phase induction machine operating at full load is modeled considering its geometry, windings, and materials. A human model is also constructed approximating its geometry and the electric properties of tissues. Using the finite element technique the electric field distribution in the human body is determinedfor a distance of 1 and 5 m from the machine and its effects are studied. Particularly, electric field potential variations are determined at specific points inside the human body and for these points the electric field intensity is computed and compared to the limit values for exposure according to international standards. 相似文献

In an attempt to evaluate the background levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), non-ortho, mono-ortho and indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in people living in an urban (Athens) and a rural (Kozani) area of Greece, blood serum and mother milk samples were analyzed. Analytical results are reported in this study. Statistically significantly differences were observed between regions, sexes and ages. Contamination levels in blood and human milk from Greece reported here are low compared to the previously reported dioxin data from other European countries and give no indication of particular health risk. 相似文献

Enhanced urbanisation and its impact on the urban climate have a significant impact on the energy behaviour of buildings. Rising standards in indoor environmental quality lead to higher energy consumption values for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning purposes. ATREUS is a research and training network launched recently aiming to cover some of these aspects to enable a better understanding of the phenomena as well as providing high quality training for young European researchers. Having completed one year of work, some indicative results of the approach used within ATREUS have already produced both methodological approaches and combinatorial case studies; an example of the latter, based on the Thessaloniki experiment and the results produced by an extended field survey, will be discussed. 相似文献

Traditionally, solvent extractions are routinely used in the assessment of contaminated land. However, vigorous solvent extractions only give total concentrations rather than that relating to the bioaccessible fraction. Recently, less harsh, aqueous-based extraction methods have been shown to be a better estimate of the microbial degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The aqueous-based hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) extraction technique was tested using 14C-PAHs in soils and compared against indigenous microbial mineralization (a measure of bioaccessibility) of 14C-phenanthrene in the presence of pyrene or benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) over a range of concentrations (0, 5, 10, or 50 mg kg(-1)) and aged for 0, 25, 50, and 100 d in four soils. At each time point, the total loss, extractability, and mineralization of 14C-phenanthrene was measured in each of the soils. The presence of the other PAHs had little effect on the behavior of 14C-phenanthrene in any of the soils. Comparisons between the amounts of 14C-phenanthrene extracted using HPCD and mineralized were made and showed that there was a correlation (1:1). This study demonstrates that HPCD extraction is able to predict the microbial accessibility fraction of 14C-phenanthrene in the presence of other PAHs in a range of soils, further supporting the applicability of this technique. 相似文献

Cyprus is one of the candidate countries to become a full member of the European Union. In order to access formally to the EU, Cyprus has to follow an implementation process and take into account all the obligations that the fifteen Member States have to respect. A large number of obligations derive from the European Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive 96/61/EC, which intends to result in the protection of the environment as a whole and the public health as well. This will be the outcome of determining ways of pollution prevention and control for several industrial sectors, which are covered by the IPPC Directive and then taking action so that all operators act according to the Directive's demands. In this framework, the National Technical University of Athens, after thorough examination of a large number of documents relevant to the Best Available Techniques (BATs), developed guidelines for the application of BATs for 14 categories of the industry of Cyprus. This paper concerns the developed guidelines for slaughterhouses. 相似文献
