Measurements of the defecation rate of Salpa thompsoni were made at several stations during two cruises west of the Antarctic Peninsula in 2004 and 2006. Rates were quantified
in terms of number of pellets, pigment, carbon and nitrogen for a wide size range of both aggregate and solitary salps. Measured
defecation rates were constant over several hours when salps were held at near-surface conditions from which they had been
collected. The defecation rate per salp increased with both salp size and the ambient level of particulate organic matter
(POM) in the upper water column. The weight-specific defecation rate ranged between 0.5 and 6% day−1 of salp body carbon, depending on the concentration of available particulate matter in the water. Carbon defecation rates
were applied to biomass estimates of S. thompsoni to calculate daily carbon defecation rates for the populations sampled during the two cruises. Dense salp populations of
over 400 mg C m−2 were calculated to produce about 20 mg C m−2 day−1, comparable to other major sources of vertical flux of organic material in the Southern Ocean. Measured sinking rates for
salp fecal pellets indicated that the majority of this organic material could reach deep sediments within a few days, providing

While it is well established that stomata close during moisture stress, strong correlations among environmental (e.g., vapor pressure deficit, soil moisture, air temperature, radiation) and internal (e.g., leaf water potential, sap flow, root-shoot signaling) variables obscure the identification of causal mechanisms from field experiments. Models of stomatal control fitted to field data therefore suffer from ambiguous parameter identification, with multiple acceptable (i.e., nearly optimal) model structures emphasizing different moisture status indicators and different processes. In an effort to minimize these correlations and improve parameter and process identification, we conducted an irrigation experiment on red maples (Acer rubrum L.) at Harvard Forest (summers of 2005 and 2006). Control and irrigated trees experienced similar radiative and boundary layer forcings, but different soil moisture status, and thus presumably different diurnal cycles of internal leaf water potential. Measured soil moisture and atmospheric forcing were used to drive a transient tree hydraulic model that incorporated a Jarvis-type leaf conductance in a Penman–Monteith framework with a Cowan-type (resistance and capacitance) tree hydraulic representation. The leaf conductance model included dependence on both leaf matric potential, ΨL (so-called feedback control) and on vapor pressure deficit, D (so-called feedforward control). Model parameters were estimated by minimizing the error between predicted and measured sap flow. The whole-tree irrigation treatment had the effect of elevating measured transpiration during summer dry-downs, demonstrating the limiting effect that subsurface resistance may have on transpiration during these times of moisture stress. From the best fitted model, we infer that during dry downs, moisture stress manifests itself in an increase of soil resistance with a resulting decrease in ΨL, leading to both feedforward and feedback controls in the control trees, but only feedforward control for the irrigated set. Increases in the sum-of-squares error when individual model components were disabled allow us to reject the following three null hypotheses: (1) the f(D) stress is statistically insignificant (p = 0.01); (2) the f(ΨL) stress is statistically insignificant (p = 0.07); and (3) plant storage capacitance is independent of moisture status (p = 0.07). 相似文献

Pelagic seabirds are central place foragers during breeding and variation in foraging trip duration and range reflect differences
in diet and chick provisioning, through the exploitation of divergent habitats of varying productivity. We tested whether
these relationships hold in small procellarriids by equipping chick-rearing Cook’s petrel Pterodroma cookii (200 g) with geolocation-immersion loggers, conducting isotope analysis of blood and measuring chick meal mass following
foraging trips of varying duration. Cook’s petrel tracked during chick rearing from Little Barrier Island (LBI) and Codfish
Island (CDF), New Zealand had larger maximum ranges during longer foraging trips. Blood nitrogen isotope signatures (δ15N) of adults were significantly higher after foraging trips of longer duration, but not of greater maximum range. There was
no significant relationship between blood carbon isotope signatures (δ13C) and foraging trip characteristics. Proportion of time spent on the sea surface and the mass of the meal brought back to
chicks were consistently greater for Cook’s petrel with larger maximum ranges, which in the case of birds from CDF coincided
with productive subtropical convergence zone habitats. As predicted, trip duration reflected divergent foraging behaviours
in Cook’s petrel during breeding. We suggest that the availability of different prey is a key factor governing at-sea distributions

Most seabirds die outside the breeding season, but understanding the key factors involved is hampered by limited knowledge
of nonbreeding distributions. We used miniature geolocating loggers to examine the movements between breeding seasons of Atlantic
puffins Fratercula arctica from a major North Sea colony where numbers have declined in recent years, apparently due to increased overwinter mortality.
The most intensively used region was the northwestern North Sea but most puffins also made excursions into the east Atlantic
in the early winter. Ringing recoveries previously indicated that adults from British east coast colonies remained within
the North Sea and hence were spatially segregated from those breeding on the west throughout the year. Updated analyses of
ringing recoveries support results from geolocators suggesting that usage of Atlantic waters is a recent phenomenon. We propose
that the increased adult mortality is related to changes in distribution during the nonbreeding period and reflects worsening

Decisions about iconic species such as the wolf provide a key index of human–nature relations. The gray wolf's reintroduction in the USA has been controversial, particularly at the interface of state versus federal management. This essay analyzes discourse surrounding this controversy, focusing on how wolves are characterized as ecological and social actors in official correspondence and management plans. I interpret this textual evidence by drawing from social theory regarding sovereignty, discipline, and population, including studies on bordering practices imposed on humans. As with humans, bordering practices in the case of the wolf may illuminate how political forces impose physical and discursive limits upon mobile bodies motivated to move across political borders by powerful exigencies of need. Economics typically assumes that injured natural resources are restored along a fixed path of increasing marginal costs. By contrast, many restoration efforts—such as cleaning a contaminated aquifer or replacing the sand on an oil-tarnished beach—are characterized bydestination-driven costs, which depend mainly on final quality, not the prerestoration quality. Given the resulting nonconvexities in cost, the optimal level of restoration may be a discontinuous and nonmonotonic function of post-injury quality. Implementation of the Kyoto Protocol will require theestablishment of procedures for monitoring,verification and certification of carbon offsetprojects. In this paper, the steps required forindependent certification of forestry-based carbonoffset projects are reviewed, based on the proceduresused by the international certification companySociété Générale de Surveillance.Firstly, a project must be evaluated for itssuitability in relation to eligibility criteria of theKyoto Protocol. These eligibility criteria areclassified under four headings: (a) acceptability tohost country parties and international agreements; (b)additionality, in terms of demonstrated positivegreenhouse gas effects additional to the`business-as-usual' case; (c) externalities orunwanted side effects; and, (d) capacity to implementproject's activities. Secondly, the scientificmethodology for calculating the carbon offsets and themethodology for data collection and statisticalanalysis must be evaluated. Additionally, the amountof carbon offsets quantified must be adjusted toreflect the uncertainty associated with themethodology and data used. An association between various abnormal mid-trimester maternal serum analyte values and adverse perinatal outcome has been reported. From an original sample of 14 857 women, we observed five women who were ‘screen-positive’ for both neural tube defects [maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) ≥2·5 multiples of the median] and Down syndrome [risk ≥1/274 using MSAFP, maternal serum unconjugated oestriol (MSuE3), maternal serum human chorionic gonadotropin (MShCG), and maternal age]. The four patients who elected to undergo amniocentesis all demonstrated both normal karyotype and normal amniotic fluid AFP levels. All five cases were associated with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and abnormal pregnancy outcomes. Two cases exhibiting severe IUGR on ultrasound examination were terminated at 19·1 and 21·2 weeks, respectively; the former also exhibited fetal calcifications and positive maternal serology for toxoplasmosis. In another case, fetal demise occurred at 36 weeks' gestation in a patient who had been treated for syphilis in the second trimester. Neither infection was confirmed in fetal tissue studies. Though resulting in live births, the remaining two cases required operative deliveries; emergency Caesarean sections for fetal distress were performed at 38 and 32 weeks, respectively, the latter case being associated with severe pre-eclampsia. We conclude that elevated mid-trimester MSAFP levels concurrent with maternal serum analyte values associated with increased risk for fetal Down syndrome may presage a poor perinatal outcome, particularly IUGR and possibly congenital infection. 相似文献

Mutualistic relationships between ants and aphids are well studied but it is unknown if aphid-attending ants place a greater relative importance on defending aphids from aphid-predators or from competing ant colonies. We tested the hypothesis that aphid-attending ants defend their aphids against aphid-predators more aggressively than against ants from neighboring colonies. We conducted introduction trials by placing an individual non-predatory insect, an aphid-predator, or a foreign conspecific ant on the leaf of a resident ant. We found that ants did not attack non-predatory insects, but did attack competing ants and aphid-predators. When we presented resident ants with both the threats (i.e., predator and competitor) at the same time, residents always attacked potential competitors as opposed to aphid-predators. We suggest this behavior may reduce the likelihood of raids by neighboring colonies. Ants appear to balance both the energetic costs of making an attack and the costs associated with losing aphids to a predator, against the benefits of signaling their defensive ability to rivals and/or preventing rivals from gaining knowledge of a potential food resource. 相似文献
