Oxidation of methanol over V2O5 catalysts supported on anatase TiO2 that were prepared using sol-gel formation and impregnation procedures were investigated. The effects of incorporating Mg in sol-gel to influence the properties of the catalyst were also studied. The process provides an alternative low temperature reaction pathway for reducing emissions of hazardous air pollutant (HAPs) such as methanol and total reduced sulfur compounds (TRS) from pulp and paper mills. The bulk and surface composition of the catalysts were determined by XRD and SEM-EDAX, respectively. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the vanadia–titania catalysts showed mainly the anatase phase of TiO2. Temperature programmed desorption of methanol from the different catalyst showed that the α and β peaks differ significantly with V content and addition of Mg. The combination of gas phase and surface reactions on the V/TiO2 catalysts reduced the amount of ozone required for high degradation of methanol to mainly CO x with small quantities of methyl formate. In the absence of ozone the catalysts showed very low activity. It is hypothesized that the ozone is directly influencing the V4+ and V5+ redox cycle of the catalyst. Oxidation of methanol is influenced by the operation variables and catalyst properties. The results of this study revealed that the V content has significant influence on the catalyst activity, and the optimum vanadia loading of about 6 wt%. Higher turnover frequencies were observed over sol-gel catalysts than with catalysts prepared by the impregnation method.  相似文献

Making remediation and risk management decisions for widely‐distributed chemicals is a challenging aspect of contaminated site management. The objective of this study is to present an initial evaluation of the ubiquitous, ambient environmental distribution of poly‐ and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) within the context of environmental decision‐making at contaminated sites. PFAS are anthropogenic contaminants of emerging concern with a wide variety of consumer and industrial sources and uses that result in multiple exposure routes for humans. The combination of widespread prevalence and low screening levels introduces considerable uncertainty and potential costs in the environmental management of PFAS. PFAS are not naturally‐occurring, but are frequently detected in environmental media independent of site‐specific (i.e., point source) contamination. Information was collected on background and ambient levels of two predominant PFAS, perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate, in North America in both abiotic media (soil, sediment, surface water, and public drinking water supplies) and selected biotic media (human tissues, fish, and shellfish). The background or ambient information was compiled from multiple published sources, organized by medium and concentration ranges, and evaluated for geographical trends and, when available, also compared to health‐based screening levels. Data coverage and quality varied from wide‐ranging and well‐documented for soil, surface water, and serum data to more localized and less well‐documented for sediment and fish and shellfish tissues and some uncertainties in the data were noted. Widespread ambient soil and sediment concentrations were noted but were well below human health‐protective thresholds for direct contact exposures. Surface water, drinking water supply waters (representing a combination of groundwater and surface water), fish and shellfish tissue, and human serum levels ranged from less than to greater than available health‐based threshold values. This evaluation highlights the need for incorporating literature‐based or site‐specific background into PFAS site evaluation and decision‐making, so that source identification, risk management, and remediation goals are properly focused and to also inform general policy development for PFAS management.  相似文献

Orchids are diverse, occur in a wide range of habitats and dominate threatened species lists, but which orchids are threatened, where and by what? Using the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, we assessed the range and diversity of threats to orchids globally including identifying four threat syndromes: (1) terrestrial orchids in forests that are endemic to a country and threatened by illegal collecting; (2) orchids threatened by climate change, pollution, transportation and disturbance/development for tourism, and recreation activities, often in East Asia; (3) epiphytic orchids in Sub-Saharan Africa including Madagascar with diverse threats; and (4) South and Southeast Asia orchids threatened by land clearing for shifting agriculture. Despite limitations in the Red List data, the results highlight how conservation efforts can focus on clusters of co-occurring threats in regions while remaining aware of the trifecta of broad threats from plant collecting, land clearing and climate change.  相似文献

The demand for gender analysis is now increasingly orthodox in natural resource programming, including that for small-scale fisheries. Whilst the analysis of social–ecological resilience has made valuable contributions to integrating social dimensions into research and policy-making on natural resource management, it has so far demonstrated limited success in effectively integrating considerations of gender equity. This paper reviews the challenges in, and opportunities for, bringing a gender analysis together with social–ecological resilience analysis in the context of small-scale fisheries research in developing countries. We conclude that rather than searching for a single unifying framework for gender and resilience analysis, it will be more effective to pursue a plural solution in which closer engagement is fostered between analysis of gender and social-ecological resilience whilst preserving the strengths of each approach. This approach can make an important contribution to developing a better evidence base for small-scale fisheries management and policy.  相似文献

Extent of pyrolysis impacts on fast pyrolysis biochar properties   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
A potential concern about the use of fast pyrolysis rather than slow pyrolysis biochars as soil amendments is that they may contain high levels of bioavailable C due to short particle residence times in the reactors, which could reduce the stability of biochar C and cause nutrient immobilization in soils. To investigate this concern, three corn ( L.) stover fast pyrolysis biochars prepared using different reactor conditions were chemically and physically characterized to determine their extent of pyrolysis. These biochars were also incubated in soil to assess their impact on soil CO emissions, nutrient availability, microorganism population growth, and water retention capacity. Elemental analysis and quantitative solid-state C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy showed variation in O functional groups (associated primarily with carbohydrates) and aromatic C, which could be used to define extent of pyrolysis. A 24-wk incubation performed using a sandy soil amended with 0.5 wt% of corn stover biochar showed a small but significant decrease in soil CO emissions and a decrease in the bacteria:fungi ratios with extent of pyrolysis. Relative to the control soil, biochar-amended soils had small increases in CO emissions and extractable nutrients, but similar microorganism populations, extractable NO levels, and water retention capacities. Corn stover amendments, by contrast, significantly increased soil CO emissions and microbial populations, and reduced extractable NO. These results indicate that C in fast pyrolysis biochar is stable in soil environments and will not appreciably contribute to nutrient immobilization.  相似文献

Thus, models projecting future species distributions must account for species interactions and differential dispersal abilities. We developed a species distribution model for Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus, a freshwater fish that is sensitive both to warm temperatures and to species interactions. A logistic regression model using lake area, mean annual air temperature (1961-1990), pike Esox lucius and brown trout Salmo trutta occurrence correctly classified 95?% of 467 Swedish lakes. We predicted that Arctic char will lose 73?% of its range in Sweden by 2100. Predicted extinctions could be attributed both to simulated temperature increases and to projected pike invasions. The Swedish mountains will continue to provide refugia for Arctic char in the future and should be the focus of conservation efforts for this highly valued fish.  相似文献

Commercial foliage plant production requires the use of pesticides for controlling pests and pathogens that can reduce aesthetic qualities of crops, rendering them unwanted by consumers. Chlorothalonil is a common, broad-spectrum, foliar fungicide used for protecting plants from a variety of fungal diseases. This fungicide may also be acutely toxic to nontarget aquatic organisms due to its mode of action. This study evaluated the amount of chlorothalonil deposited on nontarget ground surfaces during normal sprayer applications at a commercial nursery using Teflon targets. One day following application, irrigation runoff events were initiated and runoff water samples were collected and analyzed for chlorothalonil. Discharge volumes were also measured to allow estimation of the total mass of chlorothalonil discharged during each event. Results indicated that 9.8 to 53.6% of the active ingredient applied landed on nontarget ground surfaces depending on plant size, spacing, and row lengths (short rows sprayed from one side vs. longer rows sprayed from both ends). On an entire production-area scale, 29.2% of the active ingredient applied was deposited on ground surfaces. Of the total nontarget deposition, 0.25 to 0.53% was detected in runoff water discharged from the production area. Concentrations ranged from 1.2 to 500 microg/L during the first runoff events following application.  相似文献

The effect of specimen confinement on the determination of the effective diffusion coefficients, D*, for chloride, a non-reactive (non-adsorbing) solute, diffusing in a compacted soil was evaluated. The diffusion tests were performed by placing an acetic acid/sodium acetate buffer solution containing ZnCl2 (pH approximately 4.8) in a reservoir in contact with unconfined and confined specimens of a compacted sand-clay mixture for test durations of 7 or 14 d. The concentrations of chloride in the reservoir were measured as a function of time during the test, as well as a function of depth within the specimen at the end of the test. The resulting concentration distributions were analyzed using two models to Fick's second law for non-reactive solute diffusion in porous media, viz., (1) an analytical model assuming the porosity distribution could be represented by a single, weighted mean porosity and (2) a commercially available model, POLLUTE, that directly accounted for the measured porosity distribution. The D* for unconfined specimens based on the analytical model tended to be overestimated by a factor ranging from 1.13 to 1.59 relative to the D* using POLLUTE, whereas the D* values based on both methods for confined specimens typically were more consistent. In addition, the D* for unconfined specimens was greater than the D* for confined specimens when soil concentrations were used for the analysis, presumably due to the higher porosity for the unconfined specimens relative to the confined specimens. Analyses based on reservoir concentrations were inconsistent and contradictory in some cases, suggesting that the D* values based on soil concentrations were more reliable.  相似文献

Abstract:  Adaptive management is often proposed as the most effective way to manage complex watersheds. However, our experience suggests that social and institutional factors constrain the search for, and integration of, the genuine learning that defines adaptive management. Drawing on our work as social scientists, and on a guided panel discussion at a recent AWRA conference, we suggest that watershed‐scale adaptive management must be recognized as a radical departure from established ways of managing natural resources if it is to achieve its promise. Successful implementation will require new ways of thinking about management, new organizational structures and new implementation processes and tools. Adaptive management encourages scrutiny of prevailing social and organizational norms and this is unlikely to occur without a change in the culture of natural resource management and research. Planners and managers require educational, administrative, and political support as they seek to understand and implement adaptive management. Learning and reflection must be valued and rewarded, and fora established where learning through adaptive management can be shared and explored. The creation of new institutions, including educational curricula, organizational policies and practices, and professional norms and beliefs, will require support from within bureaucracies and from politicians. For adaptive management to be effective researchers and managers alike must work together at the watershed‐scale to bridge the gaps between theory and practice, and between social and technical understandings of watersheds and the people who occupy and use them.  相似文献
