An examination of 100 years of flood record at Windsor on the Hawkesbury River in Eastern Australia suggests that Warragamba Dam, which encloses 62 percent of the catchment area, has negligible effect upon flooding. This study examines the relationship between organizational commitment and supervisory commitment (commitment to supervisor) in terms of their effects on employee outcomes in the Chinese context. Based on the principle of compatibility, we hypothesized that organizational commitment and supervisory commitment served as logical mediators (global hypothesis and proximal hypothesis) for predicting organization‐relevant and leader‐relevant outcomes respectively. Moreover, because of the impact of personalism in Chinese culture, we predicted that supervisory commitment also significantly influenced organization‐relevant outcomes, in addition to its effect on leader‐relevant outcomes. Two separate questionnaires were administered to 538 subordinates and their supervisors in Taiwanese companies. Structural equation modeling and hierarchical block regression analysis shows that the principle of compatibility and personalism can explain the proposed relationship in this study. Implications and research directions are discussed in light of Chinese culture for future investigation into organizational commitment and supervisory commitment. The solution with the aid of the hybrid computer of the partial and total differential equations for an integrated surface water groundwater system is described. A versatile computing technique has been developed to make a rapid and accurate study of the groundwater response due to varying inputs (deep percolation) or outputs (evapotranspiration) from the groundwater system. Spatial variations in basic vegetation phenomena, such as pattern, and hydrological parameters, are represented by means of a grid network which also allows the input of variable boundary conditions. The model is applied to an area in Columbia, South America which is subject to high water-table conditions. Measures of horizontal extinction were initiated at the Lowell Observatory at Flagstaff, Arizona In January of 1972, and by October of 1973 an instrumental accuracy compatible with the best observing conditions was achieved. Excellent data obtained in a horizontal direction during a seven night run are compared with long term highly standardized astronomical measures of extinction obtained at Flagstaff during the period 1955–1972. The data obtained both vertically and horizontally suggest that the extinction and scattering due to aerosols were at times as low as 10% of that caused by molecular (Rayleigh) scattering alone. The vertical extinction seems to correspond (with several months lag) to rough estimates of volcanic loading; the effect of the March 17, 1963 outburst of Mount Agung, a volcano on the island of Bali, very probably caused abnormally high extinction in late summer of that year. A generally high extinction level was observed throughout 1964-1965 with a rather slow decay to a “normal” level showing up by 1966. The very high level of transparency and abnormally blue sky found in 1961 was again observed in 1972. These data strongly suggest that man-made aerosols are not yet the major contributor to the particulate matter in the upper atmosphere. 相似文献

The management of municipal waste is one of the most emotive local environmental issues in the UK at present and represents a key sustainability “battleground” as local authorities seek to reduce waste arisings and encourage the reuse and recycling of materials among households. Within the literature on household waste management, a broad range of disciplinary perspectives and practical recommendations exist and it is the aim of this paper to step back and take stock of the role of households and communities in resource consumption and waste generation patterns across the UK within recent decades. By exploring the household in this context, trends in consumption and waste generation are outlined in addition to key influencing factors such as lifestyles and well-being, demographics and environment. Finally, key lessons learnt, challenges faced going forward and approaches for developing more sustainable practices at the household, community and national levels are discussed. 相似文献

The Emission Measurement Center (EMC) in the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards was directed to conduct an emissions test program at a sewage sludge incinerator in support of a Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT) standard. One pollutant category of concern at these facilities was polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs. An objective of the test program was to measure co-planar PCBs in the incinerator emissions, the sewage sludge introduced to the incinerator, and the scrubber water effluent used in controlling the incinerator emissions. Co-planar PCB congeners are those having four or more chlorine atoms with only a few substitutions in the ortho positions, i.e. positions designated 2, 2', 6, and 6'. Thirteen PCB compounds are sometimes referred to as the "WHO PCBs," because the World Health Organization (WHO) has derived toxic equivalency factors for these congeners. Studies have shown that these dioxin-like compounds can react with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor. This same reaction is believed to initiate adverse health effects for dioxin and furan congeners. In order to conduct the co-planer PCB testing, the EMC had to develop analytical methods that could measure the 13 co-planar PCBs. The purpose of the test program was to develop, evaluate, and implement analytical test methods capable of measuring co-planar PCBs in three matrices: incinerator stack gases, sewage sludge, and scrubber water effluents. The paper summarizes the initial development work that was performed in preparation of analytical test protocols that could measure co-planar PCBs in air, water, and sludge matrices. Following the method development, a MACT emissions test program was conducted at a sewage sludge facility in July 1999 and these data are also summarized in the paper. 相似文献

The impacts of climate change as described by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are accepted as providing the most probable future. A case-study describes the problems that maritime local authorities will need to address in the near future. These are classified as being part of the local authority's responsibilities either as the owner and manager of building assets or as the planning and building control authority.
