Background

A total of 265 000 m3 of dioxin contaminated soil and sediments from past industrial activity was treated on site in an urban setting in Sydney, Australia. To respond to local community concerns about potential dioxin exposure from fugitive emissions a human biomonitoring study was undertaken.

Objective

To determine whether local residents were exposed to significant amounts of dioxin from the remediation process.Methods: Blood samples were collected from local residents around the site and a representative metropolitan control group. They were pooled within age and sex strata and the change in dioxin concentrations over the remediation period and a summary of the mid point and post remediation dioxin concentrations were compared between groups. Information on dietary intake was collected to look for possible confounding.

Results

The mean dioxin Toxic Equivalent concentrations (TeQ) decreased among both the local resident and control groups over the remediation period by 1.9 and 2.1 pg gm−1 lipid respectively. Modelled blood concentrations adjusting for age and sex did not detect a significant difference between groups for changes in either TeQ or 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8 TCDD). The summary measure approach did however demonstrate that the 2,3,7,8 TCDD concentrations among the local resident group was approximately 0.7 pg g−1 lipid higher compared to the control group post remediation. There were no significant changes in dietary intake sources of dioxin.

Conclusion

Biomonitoring demonstrated that local residents were not exposed to significant quantities of dioxin. Large scale remediation of dioxin contaminated land can be safely undertaken in an urban setting.  相似文献

Certain phases of the ecology of a sea cucumber (Cucumaria pseudocurata Deichmann, 1938) population at Shell Beach, Sonoma County, California (USA), were investigated. The sea cucumber is a brooder, lays large (1 mm diameter) yolky eggs, which undergo direct development. It forms large aggregations in the rocky intertidal zone, extending from the lower boundary of the Mytilus californianus beds to about zero tide-level. The gonad cycle was followed from September, 1970 to January, 1972. Spawning occurred in January, 1971 and January, 1972. The holothurians produce from 1 to as many as 340 eggs, depending on the size of the individual; they completely spawn-out in a few days. Hatching takes place about 1 month after egg laying. The main sources of mortality are predation by the sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides and wave action. Survival of the young is negatively correlated with density of the aggregation. C. pseudocurata increases in weight 10 to 30 fold in the first year, but much more slowly in later years. Individuals live perhaps 5 years or more, and do not become reproductive until about the third year. Dispersal is accomplished by the young being washed away to a suitable new habitat. The upper range of the intertidal distribution is determined by exposure to air, and the lower range by P. helianthoides predation.Contribution No. 1 of the Bodega Marine Sciences Association.  相似文献

Both morphological and electrophoretic isozyme variation were examined in Cucumaria curata Cowles, 1907, a common intertidal holothurian of the West Coast of North America. This species has also been described under the name C. pseudocurata Deichmann, 1938. Thirteen populations were sampled. Spicule density, and shape, tentacle size and number of papillae at the male gonopore were determined. Five of the populations were examined for variability in 8 isozymes. Spicule densities varied between populations by more than an order of magnitude. The spicule shapes were the same for all populations although the ratios of the different types varied. No relationship was found between geographical location or habitat and any of the morphological characters. No polymorphisms or variation between populations were found in any of the 8 enzymes analyzed by electrophoresis. However, the morphological data indicate random differentiation between populations. The data indicate the existence of only a single species and thus the name C. pseudocurata should be considered a synonym of C. curata.Contribution No. 2 of the Bodega Marine Sciences Association and PACTREX Report No. 2.  相似文献

The relationship between egg number and latitude was studied in a common intertidal holothurian from the West Coast of North America. Nine populations of Cucumaria curata Cowles, 1907, ranging in location from Monterey, California to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, were sampled from 1972 to 1974. Egg number versus body weight regressions were determined for each population and examined within and between years for any patterns of variation. Very little variability was found in the slopes of the regressions, indicating a constant allometric relationship between egg number and body weight from year to year and population to population. Identifying which nonindigenous species will become invasive and forecasting the damage they will cause is difficult and presents a significant problem for natural resource management. Often, the data or resources necessary for ecological risk assessment are incomplete or absent, leaving environmental decision makers ill equipped to effectively manage valuable natural resources. Structured expert judgment (SEJ) is a mathematical and performance‐based method of eliciting, weighting, and aggregating expert judgments. In contrast to other methods of eliciting and aggregating expert judgments (where, for example, equal weights may be assigned to experts), SEJ weights each expert on the basis of his or her statistical accuracy and informativeness through performance measurement on a set of calibration variables. We used SEJ to forecast impacts of nonindigenous Asian carp (Hypophthalmichthys spp.) in Lake Erie, where it is believed not to be established. Experts quantified Asian carp biomass, production, and consumption and their impact on 4 fish species if Asian carp were to become established. According to experts, in Lake Erie Asian carp have the potential to achieve biomass levels that are similar to the sum of biomasses for several fishes that are harvested commercially or recreationally. However, the impact of Asian carp on the biomass of these fishes was estimated by experts to be small, relative to long term average biomasses, with little uncertainty. Impacts of Asian carp in tributaries and on recreational activities, water quality, or other species were not addressed. SEJ can be used to quantify key uncertainties of invasion biology and also provide a decision‐support tool when the necessary information for natural resource management and policy is not available. Environmental studies and environmental sciences programs in American and Canadian colleges and universities seek to ameliorate environmental problems through empirical enquiry and analytic judgment. In a companion article (Part 1) we describe the environmental program movement (EPM) and discuss factors that have hindered its performance. Here, we complete our analysis by proposing strategies for improvement. We recommend that environmental programs re-organize around three principles. First, adopt as an overriding goal the concept of human dignity??defined as freedom and social justice in healthy, sustainable environments. This clear higher-order goal captures the human and environmental aspirations of the EPM and would provide a more coherent direction for the efforts of diverse participants. Second, employ an explicit, genuinely interdisciplinary analytical framework that facilitates the use of multiple methods to investigate and address environmental and social problems in context. Third, develop educational programs and applied experiences that provide students with the technical knowledge, powers of observation, critical thinking skills and management acumen required for them to become effective professionals and leaders. Organizing around these three principles would build unity in the EPM while at the same time capitalizing on the strengths of the many disciplines and diverse local conditions involved.  相似文献

Riparian wetlands containing springs are thought to be ineffective at removing nitrate because contact times between the upwelled ground water and the underlying microbially active soils are short. Tracer experiments using lithium bromide (LiBr) and nitrate (NO3-N) injected at the surface were used to quantify residence times and NO3-N removal in a riparian swale characteristic of New Zealand hill-country pasture. An experimental enclosure was used with collecting trays at the downstream end to measure flow and concentration, shallow wells to measure subsurface concentrations, and an array of logging conductivity probes to monitor tracer continuously. The majority of added tracer reached the outlet more slowly than could be explained by surface flow, but more quickly than could be explained by Darcy seepage flow. There was evidence from the wells of tracer diffusing vertically to a depth of at least 5 cm into the surface soil layer, which was permanently saturated and highly porous. During dry weather 24 +/- 9% of added NO3-N was removed over a distance of 1.5 m largely by denitrification. The net uptake length coefficient for this wetland (K = 0.08 +/- 0.03 m(-1)) is slightly higher than the range (K = 0.01-0.07 m(-1)) measured in a small stream channel infested with macrophytes. Nitrate removal is expected to decrease with increasing flow. Seepage flow is estimated to have removed only 7 +/- 4% of the added NO3-N and we hypothesize that vertical diffusion substantially increases NO3-N removal in this type of wetland. Riparian wetlands with springs and surface flows should not be dismissed as having low NO3-N removal potential without checking whether there is significant vertical mixing.  相似文献

Given the significance of mining as a source of particulates, accurate characterization of emissions is important for the development of appropriate emission estimation techniques for use in modeling predictions and to inform regulatory decisions. The currently available emission estimation methods for Australian open-cut coal mines relate primarily to total suspended particulates and PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <10 μm), and limited data are available relating to the PM2.5 (<2.5 μm) size fraction. To provide an initial analysis of the appropriateness of the currently available emission estimation techniques, this paper presents results of sampling completed at three open-cut coal mines in Australia. The monitoring data demonstrate that the particulate size fraction varies for different mining activities, and that the region in which the mine is located influences the characteristics of the particulates emitted to the atmosphere. The proportion of fine particulates in the sample increased with distance from the source, with the coarse fraction being a more significant proportion of total suspended particulates close to the source of emissions. In terms of particulate composition, the results demonstrate that the particulate emissions are predominantly sourced from naturally occurring geological material, and coal comprises less than 13% of the overall emissions. The size fractionation exhibited by the sampling data sets is similar to that adopted in current Australian emission estimation methods but differs from the size fractionation presented in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency methodology. Development of region-specific emission estimation techniques for PM10 and PM2.5 from open-cut coal mines is necessary to allow accurate prediction of particulate emissions to inform regulatory decisions and for use in modeling predictions.

DOI: 10.1111/j.1752‐1688.2012.00656.x Abstract: In response to concerns over increased use and potential diversion of Michigan’s freshwater resources, and the resulting state legislative mandate, an advisory council created an integrated assessment model to determine the potential for water withdrawals to cause an adverse resource impact to fish assemblages in Michigan’s streams. As part of this effort, we developed a model to predict how fish assemblages characteristic of different stream types would change in response to decreased stream base flows. We describe model development and use in this case study. The model uses habitat suitability information (i.e., catchment size, base‐flow yield, and July mean water temperature) for over 40 fish species to predict assemblage structure in an individual river segment under a range of base‐flow reductions. By synthesizing model runs for individual fish species at representative segments for each of Michigan’s 11 ecological stream types, we developed curves describing how typical fish assemblages in each type respond to flow reduction. Each stream type‐specific, fish response curve was used to identify streamflow reduction levels resulting in adverse resource impacts to characteristic fish populations, the regulatory standard. Used together with a statewide map of stream types, our model provided a spatially comprehensive framework for evaluating impacts of flow withdrawals on biotic communities across a diverse regional landscape.  相似文献
