Geometric mean estimation from pooled samples   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Biomonitoring for environmental chemicals presents various challenges due to the expense of measuring some compounds and the fact that in some samples the levels of many compounds may be below the limit of detection (LOD) of the measuring instrument. Even though various statistical methods have been developed to address issues associated with data being censored because results were below the LOD, the expense of measuring many compounds in large numbers of subjects remains a challenge. One solution to these challenges is to use pooled samples. There are many problems associated with the use of pooled samples as compared with individual samples, but using pooled samples can sometimes reduce the number of analytical measurements needed. Also, because pooled samples often have larger sample volumes, using pooled samples can result in lower LODs and thereby decrease the likelihood that results will be censored. However, many data sets obtained from environmental measurements have been shown to have a log-normal distribution, so using pooled samples presents a new problem: The measured value for a pooled sample is comparable to an arithmetic average of log-normal results and thus represents a biased estimate of the central tendency of the samples making up the pool. In this paper, we present a method for correcting the bias associated with using data from pooled samples with a log-normal distribution. We use simulation experiments to demonstrate how well the bias-correction method performs. We also present estimates for levels of PCB 153 and p,p'-DDE using data from pooled samples from the 2001 to 2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.  相似文献

In the Appalachian region of the eastern United States, mountaintop removal mining (MTM) is a dominant driver of land‐cover change, impacting 6.8% of the largely forested 4.86 million ha coal fields region. Recent catastrophic flooding and documented biological impairment downstream of MTM has drawn sharp criticism to this practice. Despite its extent, scale, and use since the 1970s, the impact of MTM on hydrology is poorly understood. Therefore, the goal of this study was a multiscale evaluation to establish the nature of hydrologic impacts associated with MTM. To quantify the extent of MTM, land‐cover change over the lifetime of this practice is estimated for a mesoscale watershed in southern West Virginia. To assess hydrologic impacts, we conducted long‐term trend analyses to evaluate for systematic changes in hydrology at the mesoscale, and conducted hydrometric and response time modeling to characterize storm‐scale responses of a MTM‐impacted headwater catchment. Results show a general trend in the conversion of forests to mines, and significant decreases in maximum streamflow and variability, and increases in base‐flow ratio attributed to valley fills and deep mine drainage. Decreases in variability are shown across spatial and temporal scales having important implications for water quantity and quality. However, considerable research is necessary to understand how MTM impacts hydrology. In an effort to inform future research, we identify existing knowledge gaps and limitations of our study.  相似文献

The solubility data for a series of non‐hydrogen bonding, monosubstituted benzenes in binary mixtures of water and non‐hydrogen bonding cosolvents is presented. Good correlation between log solubility and fraction cosolvent is obtained, therefore the estimation of solubility in mixed solvents by a log‐linear relationship can be attained. Slight positive or negative deviations from predicted solubility values are seen at high volume fractions of cosolvents. These deviations are attributed to the cosolvent‐water interactions.  相似文献

Sedimentation processes of microcystins (MCs), cyanobacterial toxins, were studied in three reservoirs located in Central Spain in which the cyanobacterial community was dominated by the genus Microcystis. MCs were detected in the sediment traps deployed in all reservoirs. In Santillana reservoir, MCs were identified in sediment traps even though they could not be found in the pelagial samples. In the other reservoirs studied, sedimentation rates for MC-containing particles during the bloom period ranged from 0.43 to 2.53 mg m−2 d−1. Interestingly, this very high sedimentation of toxic biomass is not exclusively related to decaying blooms or autumnal sedimentation due to a drop in water temperature. Instead, it seems that MC-containing colonies may be settling constantly during the bloom period and we were able to estimate that during such a Microcystis dominated bloom, around 4.5% of pelagial MCs may be involved in sedimentation. Further, these settling colonies seem to maintain good cell integrity and MCs seem not to be excreted massively. A certain loss of toxin content along the vertical settling may be attributed to minor losses due to cell lysis or to variations in MC cell quota explained by reduced production or internal consumption. Our results for the first time establish specific settling rates for MC-containing particles in freshwaters and definitely identify sedimentation as a major destination for these toxins. These data may contribute to improve managing strategies concerning risks associated with MCs.  相似文献

An effective method for determination of indicator polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been validated using gas chromatography (GC) equipped with electron capture detector (ECD). The GC–ECD method was validated by determining the linear range (working range) for determination of the compounds, minimum detectable quantities (MDQ), the precision and accuracy of the method for the analysis of the compounds. MDQ obtained for the compounds ranges from 0.0005 to 0.002 ng. Indeed the method was found to be more sensitive as the number of chlorine atoms attached to the biphenyl increases. The precision and accuracy of the GC method validated ranges from 2.4% to 14.5% and −7.0% to 14.6% respectively. Coefficient of variation associated with the repeatability of the retention times and corresponding peak areas was found to be 0.0001–0.0007 for the retention times and 0.0014–0.059 for the peak areas. Percentage recoveries for the compounds were in the range of 95.7–101.0%. The validated method was then applied to determine levels of indicator PCBs in sediments sampled from eleven sampling points along the Lake Bosuntwi in Ghana and the highest PCB load of 19.17 ng g−1 was recorded at Pipie No. 2. PCB 52 and PCB 101 were found to be the most ubiquitous indicator PCBs in the study area, both with 90.91% occurrence.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the methodology developed to analyze alternative oxidant control strategies of the 1979 Air Quality Plan for the San Francisco Bay Area. The analysis of alternative oxidant control strategies is a complex task, particularly when a grid-based photochemical model is the primary analysis tool. To handle quantitatively spatial and temporal variations in emissions under both existing and projected future conditions, as well as to simulate the effects of a wide variety of control strategies, a system of computer-based models was assembled. The models projected and distributed a number of variables in space and time: population, employment, housing, land use, transportation, emissions, and air quality. Given time and budget constraints, an approach to maximizing the information return from a limited number of model runs was developed. The system was applied in three sequences to determine (1) what future air quality would be if no further controls were implemented, (2) the degree of hydrocarbon and NOx emission control necessary to attain the oxidant standard, and (3) the effectiveness of alternative stationary source, mobile source, transportation and land use control strategies in contributing to attainment and maintenance of the oxidant standard.

A number of significant modeling assumptions had to be developed in order properly to interpret the modeled results in the context of the oxidant standard. In particular, a Larsen-type analysis was used to relate modeled atmospheric conditions to “worst case” conditions, and a proportional assumption was made to compensate model results for an imperfect validation. The specification of initial and boundary conditions for future year simulations was found to be a problem in need of further research.  相似文献

Particulate emission factors for two wood stove models have been determined for two types of fuel and a range of operating conditions. The emission factors range from 1 g/kg (fuel) to 24 g/kg. A model is presented which represents the emission factor as a simple function of the ratio of fuel load to combustion rate, or the length of time between refueling. This model is felt to be appropriate for evaluating the impact of wood-based residential space heating on ambient air concentrations of particulate matter If certain assumptions can be made about stove operating conditions. An application of the emission factor model to a typical community suggests that the contribution of wood stoves to ambient particulate levels might reach 100 μg/m3 if the entire heating load were carried by wood.

Preliminary analyses of the particulate matter Indicate that benzene extractables range from 42% of the total particulate mass at short refuel times to 67% at longer refuel times. About 45% of the mass of benzene extractables appeared in the neutral fraction of acid base extractions. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are expected to be included in this neutral fraction.  相似文献

A comparison of the two most common methods used by air pollution control agencies for the analyses of sulfur dioxide is discussed in this paper. Samples were collected simultaneously (502 pairs) for an eight month period at eight sites in the City of Chicago, using the West-Gaeke and conductivity methods. These methods are analyzed statistically to ascertain the existence of a factor describing adequately any differences between methods.  相似文献

Concentrations of heavy metals in the borehole at Dumasi in the Wassa West District of the Republic of Ghana have been measured in this study. The concentrations of the following metals in the ground water from Dumasi borehole are: Iron (Fe) – 7.52 ppm, Manganese (Mn) – 1.11 ppm, Arsenic (As) – 4.52 ppm, Chromium (Cr) – 0.026 ppm, Cobalt (Co) – 0.01 ppm, Zinc (Zn) – 0.007 ppm, Cadmium (Cd) – 0.002 ppm and Lead (Pb) – 0.005 ppm. The results of the study show that resident adults and children who use water from the boreholes are at serious risk from exposure to health hazards associated with exposure to the above metals in the boreholes in Dumasi. If the results of this study are applied to other mining communities, which lie on the Birimian and Tarkwaian rock system, then the residents are at serious risk from exposure to toxic metals from drinking water from the boreholes dug for them by mining companies operating in their communities.  相似文献
