Method for determination of methane potentials of solid organic waste   总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15  
A laboratory procedure is described for measuring methane potentials of organic solid waste. Triplicate reactors with 10 grams of volatile solids were incubated at 55 degrees C with 400 ml of inoculum from a thermophilic biogas plant and the methane production was followed over a 50-day period by regular measurements of methane on a gas chromatograph. The procedure involves blanks as well as cellulose controls. Methane potentials have been measured for source-separated organic household waste and for individual waste materials. The procedure has been evaluated regarding practicality, workload, detection limit, repeatability and reproducibility as well as quality control procedures. For the source-separated organic household waste a methane potential of 495 ml CH4/g VS was found. For fat and oil a lag-phase of several days was seen. The protein sample was clearly inhibited and the maximal methane potential was therefore not achieved. For paper bags, starch and glucose 63, 84 and 94% of the theoretical methane potential was achieved respectively. A detection limit of 72.5 ml CH4/g VS was calculated from the results. This is acceptable, since the methane potential of the tested waste materials was in the range of 200-500 ml CH4/g VS. The determination of methane potentials is a biological method subject to relatively large variation due to the use of non-standardized inoculum and waste heterogeneity. Therefore, procedures for addressing repeatability and reproducibility are suggested.  相似文献

Drybeans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are an important subsistence crop in Central America. Future climate change may threaten drybean production and jeopardize smallholder farmers’ food security. We estimated yield changes in drybeans due to changing climate in these countries using downscaled data from global circulation models (GCMs) in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. We generated daily weather data, which we used in the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) drybean submodel. We compared different cultivars, soils, and fertilizer options in three planting seasons. We analyzed the simulated yields to spatially classify high-impact spots of climate change across the four countries. The results show a corridor of reduced yields from Lake Nicaragua to central Honduras (10–38 % decrease). Yields increased in the Guatemalan highlands, towards the Atlantic coast, and in southern Nicaragua (10–41 % increase). Some farmers will be able to adapt to climate change, but others will have to change crops, which will require external support. Research institutions will need to devise technologies that allow farmers to adapt and provide policy makers with feasible strategies to implement them.  相似文献

Transdisciplinarity (TD) has become a buzzword, promoted as a suitable approach to address today’s urgent challenges in human-environment interactions. Looking at its practical implementation, however, challenges still remain to be met. Despite the concept’s popularity, it seems difficult to reconcile the idea of knowledge co-production with research realities. Taking a TD research project dealing with sustainable land management in Southern Africa (Angola, Botswana, and Namibia) as a case study, we aim to provide empirically based insights into the real-world application of this collaborative research approach to improve the general understanding of TD research in the making. Based on semi-structured interviews with project partners and stakeholders, we reveal the underlying interests, mismatching institutions and structures of power shaping the TD research process in this North–South collaboration. We identified TD as falling victim to a kind of “tragedy of the commons”, paralysed between existing power structures and conflicting interests, and being considered as extra work instead of an integral task with an inherent value in itself. By demonstrating some of the underlying causes of the challenging practice of TD, we reveal starting points for changes and provide recommendations that aim to set the base for a more reflexive and fruitful TD knowledge co-production.  相似文献

An analysis of the population genetics of the meiofaunal polychaete Petitia amphophthalma Siewing, 1956, in which the RAPD-PCR method was applied to 103 individuals from eight populations, some of them very far apart (Atlantic: Florida, Tenerife, France; Mediterranean: two Greek islands, Tunisia; Red Sea: Egypt), gave closely reproducible results. In the band patterns produced with 13 decamer primers, a total of 195 genetic characters was detected. The data were evaluated by a number of methods, including the cluster programs UPGMA, WPGMA and neighbour-joining. The detected genetic distances between the populations vary between 58.9 and 66.6, but 97% of the genetic characters, although polymorphic, are found in at least two populations and usually in all the others as well. Phenograms of the analyses find four population clusters [Florida, France (Atlantic), the Mediterranean and Tenerife]. They are, however, not completely congruent and show low bootstrap values at the junction points of the clusters (with the exception of the Tenerife cluster). Mediterranean P. amphophthalma form a cohesive population, although within it the genetic distances are graded in parallel with the geographic distances between the sites. The colonization of Tenerife, an island of relatively recent volcanic origin, can be taken as evidence that this meiofaunal species can become dispersed not only along coastlines but also across expanses of open water. However, the severely restricted variability of these populations implies that in this case a founder effect has operated, and that transport over open water is not a routine event but extremely rare. The absence of the species on the Australian coast and, for instance, on the Galapagos Islands indicates that there has been no continuous gene flow across the oceans.
