Contaminated sediments dredged from navigable waterways often are placed in confined disposal facilities to prevent further spread of the pollutants. Reducing contaminants to acceptable levels would allow for disposal of the sediments and further dredging activity. A greenhouse study was conducted to evaluate plant treatments and the addition of an organic amendment to decrease the concentration of PCB congeners found in Arochlor 1260. Sediment treated with the amendment and either low transpiring plants or no plants had the greatest removal of the PCB congeners. High-transpiring plants apparently prevented the highly reducing conditions required for reductive dechlorination of highly chlorinated PCBs. Most likely, the amendment provided labile carbon that initiated the reducing conditions needed for dechlorination. The sediment moisture content and moisture-related plant parameters were significant predictors of the PCB loss. Carex aquatalis and Spartina pectinata are predicted to be the most effective plant treatments for phytoremediation of PCBs.  相似文献

An examination of the intra-SMSA distribution of carbon monoxide exposure   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Although fixed-site monitoring data have been used to estimate the spatial pattern of human exposure, the intra-urban distribution of actual exposure has not been documented. This paper used the data collected during the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) field investigation of personal exposure to carbon monoxide (CO) to investigate the nature of the distribution of CO with respect to residential location in the Washington, D.C. SMSA. Dot-distribution maps and analysis of variance were used to document the spatial pattern of individual-level in-home CO concentrations. The results show sampled individuals living in the SMSA center are exposed to statistically significantly higher levels of CO than are those living in the suburbs. The most important implications of this work are for exposure modeling. Further investigation is needed to determine whether incorporation of a geographic component will improve exposure prediction.  相似文献

Long-term field comparisons of continuous and integrated filter measurements of mass concentrations of particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 microm (PM2.5) were performed at rural and urban sites in New York State. Two versions of the continuous tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) mass monitor are deployed at each site, in addition to Federal Reference Method filter samplers. Data are grouped into monthly averages to retain and demonstrate seasonal differences. Strong seasonal dependence is observed-the TEOM monitors with the heated sensors are biased systematically low with respect to the Federal Reference Method measurements during the cold season. For the rural site, the average bias for the sample equilibration system (SES)-equipped and standard TEOM monitors is 14 and 24%, respectively. At this location, the TEOM monitor measurements were biased low for all 34 months. For the urban site, the average bias for the SES and standard TEOM monitors is 8 and 18%, respectively. At this location, the TEOM monitor measurements are as likely to be biased high as low during the warm-season months. The hour averaged data from the two versions of the TEOM monitor are also compared, and also indicate that the SES-equipped version of the TEOM monitor captures 7-11% more PM2.5 mass at these locations.  相似文献
