Appropriate pH-related permissible soil-limit concentrations for cadmium in sewage sludge-treated agricultural soils were estimated from the proportional changes in concentrations of cadmium in potatoes, oats and ryegrass grown on two sludge-amended soils and at different pH values. Implications for potential human dietary intake of cadmium were also assessed. Yields of crops increased with increasing soil pH, probably in response to decreasing uptake of zinc as soil pH value was raised. In general, cadmium concentrations in peeled potato tubers, potato peelings, oat straw and ryegrass decreased as simple linear functions of increasing soil pH over the range of pH values measured (pH 3.9-7.6). Cadmium concentrations in potato peel were particularly sensitive to changing pH conditions, whereas cadmium levels in oat grain were independent of soil pH. On the basis that a highly precautionary approach is adopted in setting soil standards for heavy metals, appropriate permissible concentrations of cadmium in sludge-treated agricultural soil which protect the human food chain were determined as 2.0 and 2.5 mg Cd Kg(-1) for banded pH ranges of 5.0-5.5 and 5.5-6.0, respectively.  相似文献

We have determined the congener compositions of nine commercial Aroclor products of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to the sub-part-per-million level using high-resolution gas chromatography combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry according to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 1668A. These Aroclor composition data should allow improved characterization and risk assessment of PCB contamination at hazardous waste sites, particularly for dioxin-like PCB congeners. By combining the data on the concentrations of each dioxin-like congener with its World Health Organization toxicity equivalency factor, we have established dioxin toxic equivalent concentrations for each pure Aroclor product.  相似文献

Recent reports have demonstrated a cost associated with intersexuality in Amphipoda, including reduced fecundity and fertility. In this study, the gross morphology of the gonads in normal and intersex Echinogammarus marinus (Amphipoda) were compared to determine whether resource allocation to gonadal tissue accounted for this reduced fitness. Evidence for the presence of the male sex-determining hormone, androgenic gland hormone (AGH), was compared between sexual phenotypes using MALDI mass spectrometry. Two distinct intersex phenotypes (male intersex and female intersex) were found, with variation in gonadal structure corresponding with external phenotype. Examination of male intersexes revealed normal testicular development (testes, seminal vesicles and vas deferens), but also revealed the formation of an oviduct. Ovaries of intersex females showed normal ovarian development, but were reduced in length by approximately 20% due to the presence of vas deferens. The number of vas deferens in intersex females was equal to the number (one or two) of genital papillae. We hypothesise that the reduced ovarian length observed in intersex females is a likely cause of the reduced brood size previously reported in intersex females of this species. Variation in the sexual phenotype corresponded both to development of the androgenic gland and to expression of a peptide fragment corresponding to the A chain of androgenic gland hormone (AGH). Androgenic glands and a putative AGH peptide were present in males. However, in both normal and intersex females, the androgenic glands were only present in a rudiment form and the peptide was not detected. Intersex males were found to possess abnormal glands that appeared hypertrophied. However, AGH peptides were not detected, supporting the suggestion that the intersex phenotype is manifested via perturbations of AGH.An erratum to this article can be found at Communicated by J.P. Population History, Genetic Variability, and Horn Growth in Bighorn Sheep   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis ) are restricted in distribution and numbers relative to presettlement conditions. Some populations have alledgedly suffered losses of fitness resulting from small, insular populations and a breeding system that reduces effective population size. Large horns in rams, which confer breeding superiority, are absent from some populations, and this absence may result in part from loss of genetic variability. We investigated the relationship among allozyme variability, population history, and horn growth in bighorn sheep from the Rocky Mountains. Heterozygosity was higher for bighorn sheep than has been reported for Dall sheep ( O. dalli ). Heterozygosity and allelic variability were marginally related to effective population size for the proceeding 15 years. Horn growth was significantly higher in more heterozygous than in less heterozygous rams for years 6, 7, and 8 of life. By the end of year 8, more heterozygous rams had 13% higher horn volumes than less heterozygous rams. Most hunting of bighorn sheep involves selective removal of large-horned rams, which we hypothesize may reduce genetic variability of these populations and contribute to losses in fitness.  相似文献

Minimum effective release rate (MERR) of zosteric acid (ZA) was studied at Ford Island. At laboratory condition, spore attachment in Enteromorpha intestinalis was inhibited significantly at 28.2 microg cm2 of ZA. More than 95% reduction in spore attachment was achieved in Ulva fasciata at 2,000 microM of ZA through membrane diffusion system. At 40 cm depth level larval settlement was high with maximum number of Hydroides elegans settlement. The overall larval settlement was increased with increasing days of exposure. The MERR of 10 microg cm(-2) d(-1) ZA inhibited 50% of the larval settlement. However, the inhibition rate was not proportionate to the antifouling ZA concentration. Using MERR membrane diffusion system an effective antifouling strategy was suggested for Ford Island.  相似文献

Acetylene reduction (nitrogen fixation) was measured in several vegetational areas in a Delaware, USA salt marsh. Samples were collected for 1 yr and the results showed a seasonally variable pattern of acetylene reduction at all stations. Peak rates were generally recorded during the later summer and early fall (September–October). The seasonality was influenced mainly, although not exclusively, by the soil temperature. In addition, samples collected in short Spartina alterniflora stands exhibited rates which were up to 20-fold higher than those found in samples from tall S. alterniflora stands. Over 50% of the total yearly ethylene production occurred from mid-August until the beginning of December at the tall and short S. alterniflora stations. Maximum activity occurred at 5 cm depth for all stations. Surface activity accounted for only 3–4% of the total measured in the top 20 cm. Addition of glucose or mannitol resulted in considerable increases in activity, thus suggesting that heterotrophic acetylene reduction is carbon and/or energy limited. The results obtained in this study indicate that the measured rates are only potential rates and that considerable caution must be used in extrapolating from acetylene reduction rates to nitrogen fixation rates in situ.  相似文献

Metalliferous substrates are important in the distribution of various plants such asArmeria maritima, Minuartia verna, Thlaspi alpestre, Silene maritima andCochlearia officinalis, in parts of the United Kingdom. Metalliferous substrates are similarly important for a slightly different assemblage of metallophytes in the Aachen-Liège orefield in Belgium and Germany. The significance of metalliferous substrates in the distribution of the metallophytes varies from orefield to orefield and this is investigated. Certain sites, by virtue of their environmental and species diversity, are outstanding as habitats for the metallophytes and some of these are described. Observations on the importance and problems of the conservation of the metallophyte habitats are included.  相似文献

Prior estimates of economic loss from ozone damage to food crops have not allowed for farmer substitution in inputs—and particularly have not allowed for acreage shifts between crops—in response to yield changes. This is a potentially serious problem since benefits from air pollution control legislation may also be estimated without allowing for this direct substitution. This study explores how much acreage shifting might occur between corn, soybeans, and wheat if ozone were reduced to background levels, and how such substitution might affect the estimation of benefits from ozone reduction.  相似文献

Metabolism of two abundant echinoderm species constituting 99.6% of the epibenthic megafauna in the Santa Catalina Basin, off southern California, USA was measured at 1 300 m during the 1979 “Bathyal Expedition”. Specimens of the ophiuroid Ophiophthalmus normani and the holothurian Scotoplanes globosa, collected by the submersible “Alvin”, were individually placed in respirometers, and measured in situ for O2 consumption and ammonium excretion rates. For O. normani, weight-specific O2 consumption rates decreased with increasing weight and were of comparable magnitude to rates of deep-sea and shallow-water ophiuroids; excretion rates were highly variable. Population O2 consumption and excretion rates for O. normani (estimated from size-frequency distribution, abundance, and rate regression equations) were 1 129.28 μl O2 m-2 h-1 and 27.30 nmol NH 4 + m-2 h-1. Weight-specific O2 consumption and ammonium excretion rates of S. globosa decreased with increasing weight and were of comparable magnitude to rases of shallow-water holothurians. Population O2 constimption and excretion rates of S. globosa were 1.38 μl O2 m-2 h-1 and 4.86 nmol NH 4 + m-2 h-1. Combined population O2 consumption rates for O. normani and S. globosa are of comparable magnitude to that of the sediment community and plankton in the benthic boundary layer (sediment and overlying 50 m water column) of the Santa Catalina Basin.  相似文献
