Premature centromere separation (PCS) was detected in amniocytes after an amniocentesis was done because of markedly elevated maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein values in a healthy primiparous young woman. PCS has been associated with the Roberts-SC phocomelia syndrome (RS). By 23 weeks' gestation, ultrasonic evaluations did not reveal abnormal fetal development. The pregnancy continued and a male infant was born with mild manifestations of RS. PCS was confirmed in cord blood lymphocytes. This case illustrates that PCS, when detected in amniotic fluid cell cultures, requires a thorough evaluation. 相似文献

The ecosystem management paradigm has gained wide acceptance among land resource managers. The definition of ecosystem management remains fuzzy, however, and two fundamentally different views of ecosystem management prevail The first view is biocentric and considers human use of resources to be constrained by the primary goal of maintaining ecological integrity. The second view is anthropocentric and retains the importance of human use of resources, but it includes ecological and social considerations. In the 1981 book The Arrogance of Humanism , David Ehrenfeld examines the central tenets and assumptions of humanism. He provides several examples of human activities in which humanist assumptions are manifest and applies end-product analysis to these to demonstrate the arrogance and failure of humanist assumptions. In this essay, the anthropocentric view of ecosystem management (hereafter just ecosystem management) is discussed in the context of The Arrogance of Humanism , and it is shown that ecosystem management is ultimately humanistic. The underlying assumptions of ecosystem management are also discussed and are examined using end-product analysis. This analysis suggests that the belief in our ability to meet the assumptions of ecosystem management is unwarranted and that ecosystem management is yet another example of the arrogance of humanism. Summary The post-hatching growth and sleeping group sizes of green iguanas (Iguana iguana) were followed on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, for 3 successive years. The laboratory clearing was subdivided and surveyed routinely for iguanas, most intensively the six weeks following onset of hatching. A similar pattern of influx of iguanas into the clearing took place each May. Over the early weeks the size of groups generally increased. Animals sleeping in larger groups had significantly faster growth rates. Animals that disappeared from the clearing prior to July had larger group sizes prior to disappearance than those that remained. Growth rates measured in animals that remained declined markedly after June. Possible reasons for the social grouping of young iguanas are discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: We examined the effect of a point source (PS) input on water chemistry and nutrient retention in Spavinaw Creek, Arkansas, during summer baseflows in 1998 and 1999. The nutrient uptake length (Sw) concept was used to quantify the impact of nutrient inputs in the receiving stream. We used an artificial injection upstream of the PS inputs to estimate background S and used the natural decline in nutrient concentrations below the PS to estimate the net nutrient uptake length (Snet). Sw for soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in the upstream reference section was O.75 km, but Snet ranged from 9.0 to 31 km for SRP and 3.1 to 12 km for NO3‐N in the reach below the PS. Snet‐SRP was significantly correlated with discharge whereas Snet‐NO3‐N was correlated with the amount of NO3‐N enrichment from the PS. In order to examine specific mechanisms of P retention, loosely exchangeable P and P Sorption Index (PSI) of stream sediments were measured. Sediments exhibited little natural P buffering capacity (low PSI) above the PS, but P loading from the PS further reduced PSI. Loosely exchangeable P in the sediments also increased three fold below the PS, indicating sediments removed some water column P. The physical process of flow and sediment sorption apparently regulated P retention in Spavinaw Creek, whereas the level of N enrichment and possibly biotic uptake and denitrification influenced N retention. Regardless of the mechanism, Spavinaw Creek demonstrated little ability to retain PS‐added nutrients because net nutrient uptake lengths were in the km range. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Forestation of riparian areas has long been promoted to restore stream ecosystems degraded by agriculture in central North America. Although trees and shrubs in the riparian zone can provide many benefits to streams, grassy or herbaceous riparian vegetation can also provide benefits and may be more appropriate in some situations. Here we review some of the positive and negative implications of grassy versus wooded riparian zones and discuss potential management outcomes. Compared to wooded areas, grassy riparian areas result in stream reaches with different patterns of bank stability, erosion, channel morphology, cover for fish, terrestrial runoff, hydrology, water temperature, organic matter inputs, primary production, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and fish. Of particular relevance in agricultural regions, grassy riparian areas may be more effective in reducing bank erosion and trapping suspended sediments than wooded areas. Maintenance of grassy riparian vegetation usually requires active management (e.g., mowing, burning, herbicide treatments, and grazing), as successional processes will tend ultimately to favor woody vegetation. Riparian agricultural practices that promote a dense, healthy, grassy turf, such as certain types of intensively managed livestock grazing, have potential to restore degraded stream ecosystems. 相似文献

To identify Cd- and Zn-accumulating plants exhibiting a high growth rate, seeds from the halophyte species Mediterranean saltbush (Atriplex halimus L.) were collected on a heavy-metal-contaminated site in southeastern Spain (Llano del Beal, Cartagena). Seedlings from this ecotype were exposed for 3 wk to 0.1 mM Cd or Zn in a nutrient solution in a fully controlled environment. All plants remained alive and no significant growth inhibition was recorded until the end of the experiment. Mean Cd and Zn accumulation in aerial parts was 830 and 440 mg kg(-1), respectively, and the rate of metal translocation even increased with the duration of stress exposure. Resistance to heavy metals in this species may be partly linked to precipitation of Cd in oxalate crystals in the stems. A Cd-induced decrease in glutathione concentration also suggests that phytochelatins overproduction may occur in these conditions. We conclude that Mediterranean saltbush, which is able to produce up to 5 Mg dry matter ha(-1) yr(-1), may be an effective species for phytoextraction and should be tested for this purpose in field conditions. 相似文献
